Want to help my 8 year old son?

Deck Help forum

Ok, so I've been teaching my kid how to play. He saved his allowance and picked up Into the Breach event deck. Then he picked up the Venser vs. Koth duel decks. Now he's onto buying boosters and making his own collection of cards.

Tonight, I cut him loose on my binders (within reason) and his own to build a deck. I gave him some general advice on blue/black and he came up with Trample Your Face.

I think it's pretty clever considering he primarily likes to play fast burn decks, so I certainly think this will be a challenge for him to get working well.

Thats where you come in ... He asked me to post it here to get advice on how he can make it better. Keep in mind, he's got the budget of an 8 year old when it comes to buying cards - of course, I hook him up once in a while with some cool stuff because he's a good kid.

Anyway, thanks in advance for looking. I'll let him read your commends and reply accordingly.

I did just notice that he doesn't have any 5 mana creatures, that'll prevent him from using pod into the Wurm and Harvest.

The presence of card:Wurm's Tooth makes me sad.

Why's that? Also, I think those will be the first two go get kicked in favor of a few 5 drop creatures.

Because the Lucky Charms cycle is just bad all-around. You could be doing so much more than tapping out on your second turn to gain what's likely not to exceed 5 or 6 life throughout the game.

The only time I would recommend using them, in fact, is side-boarding in card:Dragon's Claw in a RDW-mirror, and only because of the double life-gain and advantage of gaining life against RDW.

lol Zandl, it's an 8 year old's first deck. Not every card is going to be optimal, calm down.

He wanted advice. I gave it. He asked why I gave the advice I did. I told him. Why am I being painted as the bad guy?

Because you worded it like a douche :3

That's beside the point. The best way of helping someone is to let them make their own mistakes. The kid will grow more as a player when he realizes the artifact isn't helping him as much as he hoped, and replaces it with a better card. Simply telling him so isn't as constructive.

I apologize if you don't want me giving out advice when people ask for it, and I'm sorry that you think I sound like a douche when simply justifying the advice that I give.

Besides. It's not like I was telling the 8-year-old to his face that card:Wurm's Tooth is bad. His father would probably say "Well, someone online said that card:Wurm's Tooth isn't too great of a card for reasons A and B. What do you think?"

His father asked for advice on the deck. What good will it do to say "Let him play it to figure it out," when he's asking for specific cards to cut and add? Come down off your pedestal and say something constructive.

I never veered it off-topic.

I'm not a big fan of Pathbreaker Wurm , even in Pod. It's just underwhelming as a 6-drop Green creature.

Perhaps, in the 6-cmc slot, go with Harvester of Souls ? He works well when you want to go back and start Podding again from 2 or 3. Massacre Wurm (as a 1-of) seems to work since you can pull him out when you need him. Mikaeus, the Unhallowed , Brutalizer Exarch , and Grave Titan are all pretty solid choices for the 6-CMC slot (obviously some more expensive than others).

Other than that, there's the obvious Woodland Cemetery , dependent (again) on the budget.

I'm not sold on Fog in the main-board. Perhaps it would be better to just add more removal. Tragic Slip is really good in Pod decks, since Morbid is active on just about every one of your turns.

Beyond that, I'd switch Doom Blade to Go for the Throat , since there really aren't any Artifact Creatures tearing up Standard right now (save for the once-in-a-while Wurmcoil Engine ).

The larger point, one for the OP, is that asking strangers online for help with a beginner's deck is the wrong approach entirely.

Keep trying though, you'll get it soon.

Got some good recommendations, helped the dude make some updates to the deck. I think his next challenge is to remove some creatures and add in more control spells. He hates taking out creatures :)
