i know that he can win the game in esper but can't you just counter him, then you will die

maxon says... #2

He can be countered. But that counter can be countered too.

xlaleclx says... #3

In a control mirror you never cast him if you can't back him up with multiple counterspells or your opponent is tapped out

10vernothin says... #4

he's basically unstoppable with enough mana up if he resolves

December 7, 2013 8:57 p.m.

HarbingerJK says... #5

the question should be what isn't good about AEtherling

December 7, 2013 8:57 p.m.

Behgz says... #6

He's only as good as the pilot running him. That being said, if you play it right he can be unstoppable.

but then a Pithing Needle ...

ChiefBell says... #8

Yeh but then you're wasting a card to make AEtherling weaker but not actually address him directly. It's waste of time.

Devonin says... #9

By the time somebody plays an AEtherling, it's because they've already won, and it's just a faster way to finish you off.

December 7, 2013 9:10 p.m.

(jaw drops) i think i just died a little inside

any deck running blue and AEtherling won't let something like Pithing Needle stop it.

December 7, 2013 9:12 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #11

Ha, yeh! Also the fact that it's used in esper. The opponent will never be allowed to play Pithing Needle .

December 7, 2013 9:15 p.m.

notamardybum says... #12

most esper decks will just d-sphere the needle if you want to go at that rout. Thats if the soldier tokens from elspeth haven't flown over you already

December 7, 2013 9:15 p.m.

Behgz says... #13

Pithing Needle actually can wreck AEtherling , the only reason he is strong is his resilience, the needle takes his blink away, making him just another creature you can kill. But that's why esper runs more threats than just Aetherling. *See Blood Baron of Vizkopa and Elspeth, Sun's Champion

Everyone in the thread is just saying "But this answers Aetherling!" "Well this answers the answer!" Back and forth. Cards all have answers. An answer to a card doesn't mean it's bad, almost 99% of the cards in magic can be countered, and 90% of creatures can just be killed with spot removal or wraths.

Anyways, aetherling is good because almost no decks can outrace 8 damage per turn. Aetherling also can't be removed by spot removal if he is played smartly, so he is a huge threat that can survive multiple kill spells.

Aetherling control take a look and let me know what you think

December 7, 2013 10:03 p.m.

HarbingerJK says... #19

I wouldn't say AEtherling is cheap lol but definitely an awesome control win con

HarbingerJK says... #20

unless patrickloyd you were talking in monetary value lol

Schuesseled says... #21

Aetherling is good because he has so very few answers in standard, and he comes in as the finisher for a control strategy which has probably already screwed your chances of winning before time is called.

reddead405 says... #22

wait isn't AEtherling 's abilities all mana abilities? and if so then Pithing Needle has no effect on it.

December 7, 2013 11:06 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #23

AH HA! Another person to fall victim to that.

No reddead405. You are getting "mana abilities" confused with "activated abilities". While a mana ability is ALWAYS an activated ability an activated ability is NOT always a mana ability.

For example, Birds of Paradise and Llanowar Elves have mana abilities. Or abilities that PRODUCE mana.

Arbor Elf on the other hand does NOT produce mana. This is an activated ability.

JWiley129 says... #24

reddead405 - mana abilities are those that produce mana, not those that require mana.

reddead405 says... #25

oooh, thanks guy. wasn't sure so that's why i asked.

December 7, 2013 11:18 p.m.

thataddkid says... #26

Mana abilities fill 3 conditions-

Do not target

Add mana to your mana pool

Are not loyalty abilities

So Aetherling's abilites can be very Pith'd.

HarbingerJK says... #27

@Ohthenoises can I Silence AEtherling 's abilities?

(since lately it seems like there has been confusion to this I will announce that this statement was sarcasm)

The Doctor says... #28

If you have enough mana, he's a three turn countdown to a win at a minimum.

December 8, 2013 12:27 a.m.

Ohthenoises says... #29

LOL HarbingerJK very nice.

For those who don't know the answer NO you can't. Spell =/= ability.

Matsi883 says... #30

@HarbingerJK: You win this thread.

AEtherling is good because of two reasons.

1): He's a three-turn clock for Esper, where he's played the most.

2): He can't be touched by removal.
