Which Deck Should I Invest In

Deck Help forum

Posted on May 17, 2013, 6:29 a.m. by Draos

Hi, I just started MTG, and currently have bought 2 budget decks.

Simic Deck

Dimir Deck

My question is which deck has more potential for improvement if I buy better cards.

Or you can just grow your simic idea, lol. It is really up to you. All of my decks that go 3-1 and better are mono-black, red/green, or blue/green/white, blue/green/black. There are just too many options. YOU have to pick what you want to stick with, try it out, and figure out what works, and what slows you down, making adjustments one card at a time until eventually you find things are working right.

So, which deck do you want to stick with and build? It has changed thrice already in this thread, lol. And I am confused as to how to advise you at this point.

shadowland is right... however if you want to be competetive this is probably a good bet... you should probably think about what you want to do and just be decisive about the deck you want to improve and the idea; then we can help you with the nuts and bolts of it... sorry if im confusing you btw :P

Good point! I have decided to go with the aura deck, it sounds like a good fit for my play style, and a deck that will let me be semi-competitive against my friends who have some pretty expensive decks. Thanks for the input ShadowLand, and I am sorry for my indecision.

I made that mistake SO many times, getting cards and trying to build and not really knowing where I wanted to go with the deck or what I wanted my deck to do, just picking cards I thought did neat things and throwing them together with no real synergy.

If it helps, and it did help me, figure out what color or colors you want to run, pick a neat card you really want to use, and google that card and what combos well with it, then go from there. If you want to build on your current base, I would start with Predator Ooze

Draos says... #5

Yeah, I am thinking I wanna make a Green-Red Deck, using Ulvenwald Tracker and some removal, like Searing Spear , and then just beat down on the opponent.

May 18, 2013 1:37 a.m.

Draos says... #6

Thats the idea I am gonna stick with.

May 18, 2013 1:37 a.m.

idodo35 says... #7

i wouldnt put Predator Ooze in a 3 color deck (bant is the color combo of blue/white/green btw) because his mana cost is really hard to get (3 greens) even though he is kinda cool if you do give up a colour (which i dont think you want to do)

May 18, 2013 1:38 a.m.

idodo35 says... #8

im talking about an aura deck here... for the simic thing Predator Ooze is great...

May 18, 2013 1:39 a.m.

ShadowLand says... #9

Green/red predator ooze is okay, has potential depending on how you build it. So what are you thinking here? Humans blitz? Burn? Elves? Dragons? Spiders? Wolves and Werewolves? Lol

May 18, 2013 1:44 a.m.

ShadowLand says... #10

In green/red, Strangleroot Geist will def serve you well, but once again. Its in how you want to manage the deck

May 18, 2013 1:45 a.m.

idodo35 says... #11

wait so what are we going for in the end? the aura deck or some kind of red/green agro thing?

May 18, 2013 1:46 a.m.

ShadowLand says... #12

One option that is out there, and you have some use of it already, is a Bloodrush blitz deck, super aggro, lots of grind straight for the throat stuff! Ghor-Clan Rampager is right in your ballpark there

May 18, 2013 1:47 a.m.

ShadowLand says... #13

Ulvenwald Tracker and bloodrush work well together too, and Searing Spear is a staple of any green/red mix I've ever seen

May 18, 2013 1:49 a.m.

Draos says... #14

Yeah, that was my plan:
I wanna go something like what was suggested before, except without the blue, because it seems unwarranted, and within the $100 limit.

May 18, 2013 1:53 a.m.

idodo35 says... #15

ok... id suggest you get Hellrider this card is sick! also Flinthoof Boar Stromkirk Noble and Burning-Tree Emissary

May 18, 2013 1:57 a.m.

ShadowLand says... #16

There is plenty to do within that limit for sure, a combo I have used in the past is to cheap bloodrush something, and then Predator's Rapport the bloodrushed creature for huge life gain hopefully on top of extensive damage.

Titanic Growth and Phytoburst are also good to use before blood rushing as well, ALWAYS wait until after they declare blockers before bloodrushing anything.

Good cards all of them idodo35, with burning tree being tied for best with flinthoof.

Draos says... #18

Here is what I have so far, these are all the cards I am thinking about having in here, its more than 60 so i need to remove some of the cards, and add in a healthy mana base.

Draos says... #19

Hey guys, I really appreciate all the help. This is gonna be my new deck in case you are interested. Any final tips on how to improve it are welcome, but it is within my $100 limit, and I already have some of the cards. Also please tell me if you think it is a better deck than the Simic Deck I started with.

May 18, 2013 2:32 a.m.

idodo35 says... #20

Predator's Rapport ? really? this card is terrible... also Phytoburst is a sorcery and Titanic Growth is just bad... might as well play a Giant Growth also you have to put in more two drops for Burning-Tree Emissary try another Flinthoof Boar and maybie Lightning Mauler ...

May 18, 2013 4:24 a.m.

Draos says... #21

Better now? I used Predator's Rapport as per ShadowLand's suggestion, and it looked decent but i guess not.

May 18, 2013 4:34 a.m.

idodo35 says... #22

you should probably drop the Arbor Elf its a mana dork and you dont need it here. you should add a bit more removal, id recomend Pillar of Flame also, probably should add a few more Stromkirk Noble ...

May 18, 2013 4:41 a.m.

Draos says... #23

I have Stromkirk Noble in the deck already. I agree with your Arbor Elf suggestion.

May 18, 2013 4:43 a.m.

Draos says... #24

Sorry misread

May 18, 2013 4:45 a.m.

Draos says... #25

Ok, fixed again. Just a question though why is Predators Rapport not good?

May 18, 2013 4:51 a.m.

idodo35 says... #26

because you are an aggro deck and you dont need lifegain... mostly as a rule of thumb lifegain without other effects is bad. more so in an aggro deck and even more if its contitional...

May 18, 2013 5:15 a.m.

Draos says... #27

Ok, is this setup better, and is this better than my original simic deck.

May 18, 2013 5:22 a.m.

idodo35 says... #28

yes its much faster and stronger... however if you intend to play Predator Ooze id suggest adding more forests over mountains (maybie switch 2 mountain with 2 forest...)

May 18, 2013 5:26 a.m.

sylvannos says... #29

In general, life gain by itself isn't good because it basically just stalls the game. You want it to come with something else, like Sphinx's Revelation or Centaur Healer . Predator's Rapport offers a nice boost in life, sure. However, it doesn't give enough health for its mana cost. For example, if you have Thundermaw Hellkite out, you get 10 life. However, you could have also just cast Fog to prevent 10 damage, except Fog doesn't require you to have a large creature out.

Looking at the opponent's hand is another effect you don't want by itself. You want it attached to something else. Search Warrant , however, is just terrible altogether because it combines two "meh" effects. Gitaxian Probe is amazing, though.

Draos says... #30

Thank you Sylvannos, would you say my new setup is better than the $50 blue, red, green deck you posted before.

May 18, 2013 5:40 a.m.

sylvannos says... #31

Yeah, definitely. I just didn't know if you wanted to play three colors or not.

May 18, 2013 6:12 a.m.

Draos says... #32

Yeah, the reason I did not go for your suggestion was just because I thought blue was under utilized, although I really liked Ulvenwald Tracker so I based this current deck off of that.

May 18, 2013 6:16 a.m.

sylvannos says... #33

Ulvenwald Tracker is my favorite creature in Standard right now. I don't play him as much because of how many people at my shop are playing Midrange, but he gets stuff done against aggro. You have Predator Ooze and the two were just made for each other.
