All I want is to find a good card to speculate on...

I give up.

First it was Glittering Wish, then it was Liliana of the Veil, then it was Collected Company, then it was Blood Moon, then it was Cunning Wish, then it was Omniscience, and now... It's Snapcaster Mage.

sigh

All I want is to find a good card to speculate on; however, I've just kept on failing and failing. I question at times why I try to profit off the damn secondary market in this fashion.

What now? Should I just buy every staple in multiples? Should I just give up trying to gain value? I don't know... This recent trend with Snapcaster Mage is making me feel like a goddamn idiot. Does anyone else feel this way sometimes?

I feel like Snapcaster Mage was an obvious one. I don't spec for this very reason though. It's rather unpredictable and I find more fun playing the game rather than playing the market. That being said, I do pay a large amount of attention to the market so I can pick up my cards I think I might want to play with at the lower end, instead of letting myself be jerked around by the jumps and dips in prices.

I do have to be honest though, I didn't expect Snapcaster to rise so much. I picked them up at $35 each and thought I was late to the party.

Tbh every Modern staple not being reprinted in MM2015 is bound to rise soon. It's Modern season, 3 Modern GPs coming up, lots of new players flushed into Modern because of MM2015.

I don't think speculating is very tough. If you want a target Engineered Explosives, Olivia Voldaren. Both for obvious reasons. EE hasn't seen a printing since MM1 and it's highly unlikely we will see a standard-reprint because of the sunburst-mechanic. Olivia is on the rise right now as it preys on the Company decks and Jund is gaining more and more ground. It also sees occasional play in Grixis decks. Combine that with being a mythic that's not going to see a reprint for at least until MM3 and tada you have a target for speculation.

Lol, Putrefy. It turns out that Olivia Voldaren is toast, too.

With all that said, however, I think I'm gonna go for the Engineered Explosives.

@jamesfiek same here (maybe got to them 8). So glad I picked out my 5 Snapcaster Mage for $35. Why are all these buyouts happening?

Putrefy lol, forgot that you wrote that here. That is what happens when I read 5 articles are once, I forget what was written.

Someone told me that September is the best time to buy modern cards. Is this true or is there a better date? I am getting worried now, with all these price bumps (looking at playset of Liliana of the Veil).

I seriously doubt that Liliana will rise to much more. I think what she is at right now it too much.

Well, here's a question: why are you trying to profit off magic? Do you use these cards you invest in? If not, why not just go buy some stocks or bonds for a 1000% more secure investment?

Speculating is a gamble. I am not into that, I just like to play the game.

If you do want to spec look for the spike time. Look for cards that are limited in availability, and high in demand.

Look at the rising archetypes, and see what makes them tick. Grixis stuff is on the rise at the moment.

Considering it's modern season and there are lots of people out buying modern cards, now is a terrible time to buy in in anything. This is when you want to be picking up standard cards that will be around post rotation, especially DTK cards since they will survive an extra rotation that KTK/FRF cards won't with the new standard schedule. After the modern events are done and over with(fall time) and the new standard season starts to pick up is when you want to buy all the things from people who are selling their modern decks to pay for the standard things you bought in June and July.

I'm buying as many cheap MM15 staples as I can along with Den Protector and cheap mythics like Whisperwood Elemental and See the Unwritten

I think a good target is the new Sidisi. She will spike after rotation.

lily and snap were obviously, i picked up playsets of snap at $15-20, sold them at $35, picked more back up at like $30, sold them at $40, rinse repeat, now i sell them for $55ea and bought a few at $40 lol

good cards to speculate on include abrupt decay, a modern and legacy staple, at the same rarity of snapcaster in a set that just rotated, theres no reason the card wont grow to $20+ over the next year. shocklands as longer term holds, theyll continue to creep back up. huntmaster of the fels isnt a terrible card, although more casual than competitive he sometimes creeps into main decks and sideboards like his recent appearance in the winning deck of a modern piq. shouldnt be over night but again, he wasnt reprinted and will creep up.

also if you travel a lot or go online a lot, watching buy lists is really good, as when stores start shifting their buylist prices will rise with it, blood moon is only $60 in part because stores are buying it for 30-40 each, whos going to sell you one for under buylist? which means they can be listed on tcg/ebay at $50 and be a 'good deal' so when buylist of foils goes up to $60 and i snatch up a foil on tcg for $67 im okay with that

Yea, Abrupt Decay is another one people are all over that I've got a few copies of.

Also if you want the most enjoyable way of speculating and making money off magic just invest in a single deck, actually LEARN the deck and do well at FNM's. I bankrolled entire edh decks with store credit and picked up several specs along the way like Scourge of the Throne when it was $5. It was probably the easiest and most enjoyable way to help defray costs of this money pit of a hobby we share.

September is not the best time to buy Modern, late Nov/December is and things will be decent until May'ish.
