Another price spike

Bitterblossom went from $18 to $30 in the last week. What the heck happened? I don't recall any BB decks wrecking face lately.

Glad I got them a week and a half ago, geez.

I believe that has to do with speculation it's going to be removed the modern ban list.

Though if 'another' is referring to the tron staple spikes, those were 100% expected because of the upcoming modern season. Not any ban related reasons. g/r tron is a powerhouse and easy to play not to mention fun. At the end of last year when it started making waves, everyone I knew, knew it was and would be a thing. I picked up my Karn Liberated in dec for u/w tron at 30 a pop, knowing 40 was going to be a reality, but 50+ because of ban fears was not something I imagined. Why? Because I gave the benefit of the doubt more people would have more sense about the ban list than run around like chicken little screaming, Birthing Pod is going to be banned. /rant on this subject.

It probably is to do with a possible Modern unban. Either the hype is enough to significantly increase demand, or someone has bought retailers out of the card in anticipation of an unban and a price spike even greater than this one.

People are speculating it will be unbanned next Monday, but I'm not sold. There was a reason it was banned, and while cards like Wild Nacatl were subject to questionable banning, Bitterblosson should, and most likely will stay banned.

I personally don't expect the banlist to change any time soon. The meta is diverse at the moment, so new bans are unlikely, and I doubt removing cards from the banlist would improve this.

January 28, 2014 3:26 p.m.

Ah, so the banlist update is on Monday. That would do it.

Are there any solid rumors of an actual unbanning or is it mostly just hope?

January 28, 2014 3:41 p.m.

DrFunk27 says... #8

It's absolutely hope. There is nothing that would indicate Bitterblosson becoming unbanned.

I wasl ooking at it two weeks ago and it was still $35

I'm actually in the unban camp on this one, but I may be missing some major synergy that's going to break the format wide open...it to me is very strong, but shouldn't be banned.

Jace and Mysty should stay banned, GSZ and Golgari Grave-Troll should stay banned too...but I just don't get it with Bitterblossom . I welcome enlightenment.

January 28, 2014 4:33 p.m.

This happens every year.

Grave Troll over Bitterblossom? Do you know how much graveyard hate there is now? Troll could easily become unbanned and still not be the best deck. Bitterblossom would put Faeries back where it was before it was banned.

MindAblaze says... #13

The way I see it Spellstutter Sprite gets better. Counterspells suck in modern right now (for the most part) so I don't think it's the end of the world.

Not that Vendilion Clique needs to be any more expensive...

Saying there's lots of graveyard hate doesn't make Bitterblossom more of a threat though

January 28, 2014 5:08 p.m.

DrFunk27 says... #14

I'm saying Bitterblossom would not have much opposition which is why it was banned in the first place. Dredge no longer can combo safely with all the graveyard hate, especially ooze being reprinted. Grave Troll could easily be unbanned without killing the format. I don't think anything gets unbanned.

Like I said in the other thread, not every black deck in Modern wants to run Liliana of the Veil or Dark Confidant , but almost every one of them wants Bitterblossom somewhere in its 75. The card is a repeatable Fog against aggro, provides tons of utility, makes for good Sword of War and Peace targets, and would probably usher in more G/B/x control and midrange decks, while pushing non-Affinity aggro further out of the format.

Card should stay banned.

i think it should be unbanned. I'd like to see faeries back as a tier 1 deck. Same with Jace TMS.

Jund is way too strong.

January 28, 2014 10 p.m.

DrFunk27 says... #17

Jace, should by no means, ever by unbanned in Modern. That's just asking for trouble. The way to deal with Jund is to ban cards that make it crazy, not break other cards back into the format that would make other decks just as crazy.

January 28, 2014 10:04 p.m.

sylvannos says... #18

Jund has a horrible match up against Tron and Pod. It's in a really good spot right now. Unbanning Bitterblossom AND Jace, the Mind Sculptor is just asking for Esper or BUG to replace Jund as the top dog in Modern.

At least Jund can overextend.

Jace is most likely going to be unbanned this year or next year in my opinion. I wouldnt be shocked if jace got unbanned this year or next.

now that cards like Hero's Downfall , Dreadbore , Beast Within , Maelstrom Pulse are being printed more often to go with hatebears like Spirit of the Labyrinth Jace is much less unbalanced.

Jund too strong? Goodbye Bloodbraid Elf

Every deck too strong? Goodbye Jace, the Mind Sculptor

Faeries too strong? Goodbye Bitterblossom

Dredge too strong? Goodbye Golgari Grave-Troll

Zoo too strong? Goodbye Wild Nacatl

I sense a pattern. Therefore, I predict bannings of Birthing Pod , Splinter Twin , and Karn Liberated , along with Deathrite Shaman

sylvannos says... #21

"Dies to Dreadbore " is not a convincing argument for unbanning Jace, the Mind Sculptor . Even using his zero ability, you draw a replacement card for him, then you eat a removal card out of your opponent's hand.

"2UU: Draw a card, then target player discards an instant or sorcery that could target a permanent you control" is really good. That's if you have a kill spell for a planeswalker. Most of the time, the Jace player would just tick him up to 5 to put him out of Lightning Bolt range, mess up your next draw and Time Walk you, all the while protecting him via Tarmogoyf or Dark Confidant or Mana Leak or Spell Pierce or Bitterblossom or whatever else.

If jace gets unbanned, I will walk into the streets naked and take a vow of poverty like St. Francis of Assisi.

January 28, 2014 10:27 p.m.

xzavierx says... #23

really good and unfair to gameplay are completely different concepts though.

I'm just saying now that cards are available to combat them better they go from unfair to very strong and should be allowed back into modern.

DrFunk27 says... #24

Karn isn't going to be banned because by he costs 7. It's the Urza lands that make him broken, but there are ways to beat it. I don't think anything is going to get banned.
