Are MM2015 packs still $9.99?

I'm seeing them going for 12.50 on TCG, and I'm seeing boxes go for $250 plus, and people are saying they're going to go up. Was there a price hike I missed? Because it doesn't make sense to me for anyone to spend more than $240 for a box if it has 24 packs that are $9.99 ($240 even seems a bit ridiculous to me, I get that this is a highly desired set, but whats the point of buying a box if it's not less per pack? You might as well just get packs.)

Can anyone clear this up for me? Is my math wrong? Is this just online prices, or is this what I can expect when I ask at LGS? Are LGS's even allowed to go over wizard's recommended prices?

MSRP is just that - manufacturer suggested retail price. If big box stores pick it up you'll see it that price, but depending on demand, stores have every right to raise the price beyond that.

It's frustrating, at times, but not much you can do about it.

Yes. The boxes and the packs are most assuredly going to go up. The reason why it has risen is because cards have been spoiled, and from the looks of it, its going to be a better printing that MM1.

As such, demand has increased and the boxes have gone up. Very glad I preordered at $240.

The set is also not out yet, so this is a sort of pre-reg pricing based on hype.

I mean, I get raising the price for a box when it's been out for a long time and has become scarce, but won't raising it ahead of time just counteract Wizard's efforts to keep prices level (ish) through reprints?

The stores have zero interest in what Wizards may or may not be trying to do with regard to pricing in the secondary market, in fact they would be at counter objectives. With MM1, the LGS horded the boxes and sold packs and boxes at CONSIDERABLE markup from MSRP. Wizards has supposedly learned their lesson from this and increased the print run of MM2015...but I would still expect these to end up retailing for more than MSRP upon release. I was actually surprised LGS were allowing Preorders online at all.

I definitely don't have $1000+ kicking around to spend on mtg; but every few years I'll drop about that much on downhill ski gear. So I get it.

Never spend that much on boosters in magic. You'll never get your money's worth. Unless it is for draft, but even then it is better to just make a cube.

These boxes are going to be higher than MMA I reckon. Here's two reasons. 1) Definitely seems to have a lot more competitive value. The cards that have been revealed so far fit nicely into the archetypes that we currently have, meaning it is prime hoarding targets to raise the price for speculation. 2) Most of the excess print run ISN'T actually going to get sold. Most of it is going straight to be used in the tournaments, most likely for prizes. This means that the players do get the cards directly, but the stores do not. The stores probably won't have as much of a larger stock than before, so expect the same amount of hoarding to occur. The prices will most likely rise most in places where tournaments most likely don't occur, so be wary about that.

I bought and cracked 6 boxes of MMA the last time around. Total # of Tarmogoyfs: 0. This time around I pre-ordered a case (which is 4 boxes rather than the usual 6) for $920. Total # of packs I'm going to open: 0. They'll hibernate for a year or two and go back out, or if I happen upon a group of friends with $ we'll draft some, but I'm never again going to throw that much cash away on lottery tickets. That being said, my LGS has the option to sell their boxes for whatever they want and if that number is appropriate I may pick one up from there and just go nuts =)
