Best Trade Ever

Economics forum

While at a draft tonight I ended up winning a random Stoke the Flames promo card. This led to the best trade I have ever made in magic.

During the draft someone pulled a foil Treasure Cruise and once he saw my stoke promo he proceeded to ask if I would trade it for the treasure cruise (now before I get accused of sharking him let me say that he knew full well the value of the treasure cruise as we had all been joking about it and it's value after finding out it has passed by three people), I hesitated at first as I was in the middle of a match, which promoted him to offer two Dig Through Times and a regular Stoke the Flames as well. I was stunned, asked if he was sure and with the shake of a hand completed the single most profitable trade I have ever made.

I would love to hear your stories of epic trades, feel free to share them here and DFTBA.

Traded 3 Boros Reckoner for a foil Ral Zarek and a Temple of Mystery before Reckoner's value tanked. Still loving the foil Ral in my EDH deck.

Makes me feel better that I traded an Ashcloud Phoenix, Deicide, and Chromanticore for the Stoke the Flames promo.

Actually this might be in the right forum after all. I don't know, it's a bit weird.

I traded away a Shipbreaker Kraken for a Watery Grave. To be fair, both of us were total noobs at the time and valued cards by rarity. Rare for rare seemed fair back then.

Here, take my Quicken. I'll take your Snapcaster Mage. They're kinda the same thing.

I one traded a Mikaeus, the Lunarch and a Krenko, Mob Boss for Liliana of the Veil

But wait, you got a foil Treasure Cruise, 2 Dig Through Times and a regular Stoke the Flames? that is insane!!!!

How much is the Stoke promo? I got one tonight and the promos tend to drop a bit so I'd like to trade as soon as possible

WOAH.... that is an epic trade. I think it definitely takes the cake here but I always enjoy sharing my own stories too :)

Back when Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker was $40 my brother in law got one. I advised him of the price and told him to go sell it and get as many cards as he wanted from the store but instead, after playing with it a while, he wanted to trade it and asked for my Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker which he had had his eyes on for a while. Naturally I was okay with that... I even forced a few extra rares and another mythic he was interested into the trade. And then turned around and traded the Sarkhan to my standard playing buddy for a playset of Breeding Pool.

It's all about relative value. Crazy stuff.

Back when I first started playing I pulled Aurelia, the Warleader and Gisela, Blade of Goldnight for six rares from my buddy. This was way before we knew anything about value. I ended up getting Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter, Dread Cacodemon, Damnation, and three other rares...really don't remember them. Haha. I just though it was cool. I didn't realize until over a year and a half later that Damnation was worth $40. Haha

I'm really upset I couldn't make FNM last night, I wanted to make all of the december ones. I've been consistently top 4'ing, so I was hoping to get out with four stokes lol.

December 6, 2014 11:42 a.m.

TheGamer says... #15

Dalektable: I feel ya. I consistently get the promo for FNM every week. I got the promo probably 3 times last month, and ofc when i play for the coolest promo ever i dont get it :(, lol.

Fulcrum: TTP is only for organizing trades.

kungfuturtle that's actually a shitty trade on your end. MMA Tarmogoyf is more than 6*$30 unless your store has strange prices.

December 6, 2014 12:38 p.m.

TheHroth says... #18

I missed FNM last night too becauss of an exuberant amount of schoolwork I allowed to pile up. Dx

At least my friend got a Stroke the Flames I can trade for, so I can still get my full set!

Loving the amount of people posting here and loving the stories. A great trade can really make a day in my opinion, and I've seen some really nice ones so far. Keep it coming everyone.

Kid pulled a foil Thoughtseize out of a Theros box. Offered him a Voice of Resurgence for it (at the time, were both about $40). I recently traded the foil Thoughtseize for a Cryptic Command and a Celestial Colonnade. Not a bad upgrade from a Voice of Resurgence.

Wow now that is a trade and a half. This was mentioned earlier but I am still amazed at how much relative (or personal) value influences trades. Works out for us though.

I'm old.

At a Nemesis prerelease way back when, I was able to trade a foil Predator, Flagship, a regular Predator, Flagship, and a Kor Haven for two Underground Seas.

I traded away the Seas for other dual lands, but still came out way ahead.

@OpenFire: You beat me to it. Unless you got like first place and won a box for each of those events, he probably lost a lot of value after opening up 36 boosters filled with Standard garbage.

Seriously, he traded a $200 card for what was essentially a booster box of a set still in print. That sounds fucking awful lol.

I traded a Stomping Ground for 4x Advent of the Wurm and 2x Trostani, Selesnya's Voice. Then I turned around and traded that for 2x Stomping Ground and a Foil Young Pyromancer. Turned that into a Thoughtseize when it was about $25 and 3 Counterflux. Successful night.

December 6, 2014 6:59 p.m.

OpenFire says... #27

Prima the last trade is really bad on your side. Foil Young Pyromancer is $42.

December 6, 2014 7:05 p.m.

Prima says... #28

Did I say Young Pyromancer? I meant Pyromancer's Gauntlet. I traded it to a RDW player and he went crazy. It was too high of a mana cost it seemed, but whatever

Besides many trades on Facebook where I'm giving up a bunch of literal junk standard that will be 50 cent rares post rotation for foil staples, my favorite so far was a simple 2x Sarkhan DS for a Foil Polluted Delta when the Sarkhan was at $40. Foil fetch trades are harder to come by now though unfortunately.

December 6, 2014 10:24 p.m.

I once traded 50 cents in commons for a Blood Crypt back when it was like 12-15 dollars. He knew the price, and didn't want it.

A few weeks ago I traded a Reliquary Tower to the same guy for a Temple of Enlightenment.

Before y'all hate on me, I told him the prices asked him several times if he cared about value and if he was sure he wanted to do it, and he agreed.

I traded a COMMANDER 2013 Wrath of God for a Liliana of The Veil. No joke. Do I feel bad? Nope. I didn't rip off an innocent kid or anything, the guy just really wanted Wrath of God lol.

ThisIsBullshit I did the exact same thing with a guy 2 years ago but with the lands from Innistrad, like 3 of them. He knew full well the price....

Was his name Jack by any chance?

SpaderAce, no, his name isn't Jack lol

When I was a little kid first learning magic many years ago I traded a Gaea's Cradle for a Baron Sengir and some other piece of junk.

Oh wait... good trades...

December 9, 2014 7:57 p.m.

Traded 2 foil basics for a foil sacred foundry years ago. Also traded a check land for an arabian nights city of brass.

December 9, 2014 11:05 p.m.

Sold a freshly opened Temporal Mastery for $50 cash. Bought a fat pack and pulled a Temporal Mastery. Sold it for $25 store credit and bought it back last year for $5.

When I do the math I believe I netted a fat pack and 1 booster pack for -$26

once when i was still a noob i traded my two Vraska the Unseen for a playset of Thoughtseize and Mutavault. i felt guilty when my friend flipped out at me but well we didnt know what we were doing.

AjMcGamer says... #40

... Wow I think that takes the new #1 spot here. That is an epic trade, while I can understand why your friend was upset, we've all made lopsided trades when starting off. When I first started playing my friends and I traded more based on personal value rather than dollar value of cards, looking back, we fleeced each other quite a few times before delving more into the financial side if the game. It's all a part of the learning process of magic.
