Booster Pack Questions

Ok, so I am a very low budget player. And I just finished my modern deck and don't play much standard. Now if I don't plan on paying for singles or investing in them at the moment... What would be the best set to buy booster packs from, looking for items for the Trade Binder. Not necessarily valued cards (of course a perk) but mainly tradable cards. Choices to choose from (in no particular order) Dragon's Maze, Theros, Gatecrash, M14, and Return to Ravnica. My initial choices would be Return to Ravnica and Theros. Any Corrections or better suggestions?

If you're in no real hurry, you could wait for Born and buy some boxes or play a bunch of limited, then dump the high cards while prices are still inflated.

For right now, Return to Ravnica and Theros are the money sets, so those are the safest bets until BNG comes out.

I advise against cracking packs for trade stock. Almost every booster pack is worth more sealed than opened. You'll be hemorrhaging money, and that's a problem for a player on any budget. Because you state that you're on a low budget, this really isn't an advisable course of action for you.

Although the initial investment is a bit higher, you'll save money by just buying singles.

If you absolutely insist on opening packs, I at least advise you to wait until Born of the Gods, preorder a box, and open those packs. You'll have the benefit of preorder prices and the release week inflation on whatever you open.

as a budget player, investing in boosters for any reason other than drafting is a terrible idea

I would personally buy a box of Return to Ravnica. But since you're on a budget, only do so if you're planning on drafting it with some friends. That will make it fun, and you can just make sure to let them understand you wish to keep the box. Also, this would give the most value in the long game. It has many other format staples, and shocks which will always be money cards to an extent.

buying packs is usually a bad idea, i don't have much of a collection, but once i bought a pack for fun of rtr, cracked jace, need a larger collection, so i traded him in for more packs, continued to trade in rares for packs, people actually started gambling on how many packs i could get. i got 17 packs for 1, with no value rares, just 2 Mercurial Chemister , Cryptborn Horror , that azorius wincon guy with the counters for 5 turns, Carnival Hellsteed , and Rest in Peace , this is a very rare situation, so buying packs is usually inadvisable, but a fun story.

You could always split some preorders with friends, then draft and play for the prize cards. That way, you aren't footing the whole cost yourself, you learn drafting strategies, and you have fun opening the box. It's not uncommon for private draft groups to preorder up to a case of sealed product, then stock it away and draft from it until the next set.
