Box vs EDH Deck

Economics forum

This is kind of financial. Kind of not. But this was the best fit. So, I have a couple of options for my present for christmas listed above. I was pretty strong set in getting a Chinese box of Khans of Tarkir, however then I got to thinking about building an EDH deck. So, I ended up throwing together this deck after watching some videos and reading a bit.

So, basically the question is this. Will the economic benefits of the box outweigh the owning of an EDH deck to play another format? I feel like I know the answer, though I thought I would ask. It would be an easy decision if not for the fact that the thought of a foil chinese fetch land makes me drool.

play the deck. At least building the deck will for sure give you emotional satisfaction where-as the box may or may not reap any true happiness .

I'd most likely build the deck. I would only ever go for a box if I know I won't be able to regularly play it.

Tis the response I expected. And, as for regularly play...eh. Maybe. I'll play between rounds at FNM, and a friend of mine has been wanting to get into EDH so maybe I can convince him to pick up a commander 2014 deck.

I vote for build the deck. Boxes aren't always good investments while in the deck, at leas you know you are getting your money's worth, plus you can play it. In addition, your chances of pulling a foil Chinese fetch are low. Alternatively, you could just buy a few foil Chinese fetches. Foil Bloodstained Mires are going for $40 on average now (in English) and foil Windswept Heaths and Wooded Foothills for about $45. You could get a playset of any of those for the price of the commander deck.

SimicPower Haha it was just an example, I know the chances are low. I just enjoy foreign language cards, and a box of them would be pretty cool. But the deck is the better investment and I will get more enjoyment out of it in the long run, so that's the pick. I just lose that feeling of cracking packs :p

Just do the deck. You ultimately want to play Magic, right? Then you'll definitely enjoy your deck more. :)

EDH is the best format, so I would definitely go for the box, because one EDH deck is simply not enough. Once you finish one you'll just end up wanting more! It's like crack, seriously, stay away.

I remember when I built my first EDH deck and just sort of threw it together with a bunch of cards that fit the color of the general (it wasn't half bad though!)... I thought it would be my only one and that I would only play it once every blue moon... now I have 11 commander decks... grant it about half are modified versions of pre-con ones, but at least 5 I built entirely from scratch and I have a couple more in the very beginning stages lol. The only problem I have with EDH now is buying sleeves haha I have to hit up my LGS every black friday and get several hundred

So long story short, when Gatecrash was released, I was super excited, you had 5 cool shock lands, a bunch of awesome guild leaders (at the time, each was around 10) and the all-star Boros Reckoner; so I picked up 2 fat packs at my LGS because I thought it would be a great set. I then cracked 18+3 packs (FNM winnings), In my 21 packs, the best card I got was a Thespian's Stage. At the time, he was three dollars. From a total of around 90 dollars of investment, I opened just under 10 dollars worth of cards. Since then, I have bought three packs (all of them Khans). The moral? No matter how good the feeling of opening packs is, the feeling of getting s*** is worse. So go for the Commander deck and treat yourself to a deck full of cards that for the most part, will stay where they are in value and will overall provide more happiness and enjoyment for you!

Sincerely, the Breakfast Club (I hope somebody gets this reference :) )

i love edh, constantly building and revamping decks. but you don't seem to like edh all that much nor have a play group to make the investment worthwhile.

if standard (maybe modern) is your choice, your best bet is just to find 100-120 in value cards you want and get those. if you are set on box v edh deck, get the box b/c that will probably yield you a card you want and trade fodder for others you want.

Really, what it comes down to is enjoyment.

Are you going to play lots of EDH? Get the deck.Do you love cracking packs? Get the box.

It's that simple, really. Personally, if I was split, I'd err on the side of getting the box. I'm always going to be buying singles to build a deck, but since I don't generally buy a box for myself, it's something that I'd only do it somebody bought it for me (exception: I bought a box of Khans when it came out, but at that point the EV was about double the cost of the box).

Getting the deck is like getting socks for Xmas - sure you'll use them, but you'd probably just buy them anyhow regardless.

Getting the box is like getting fancy cufflinks - not as useful, but they're nice and being gifted them is about the only way you'll have them.

IMNAAHO.
