Buying a box versus buying singles

Economics forum

I was thinking bout my economy in my magic. And after some accounting I found that I am missing currently like 360 dollars of trade power. Due to bad spending and stealing. Not to mention kid allowances. So by this summer I'm planning on spending some money to get back in finances. So I did some math and came up with the sum of my loses. Once again came out to like a good 200 dollar investment and we d be back in. So then I thought what would be much easier buying the singles we need or getting a box. And if I get the box which box would u guys think has the most gain in it and fair price? It can be from any set

Always singles for value, always.

If you want a box Khans of Takir is the way to go. Fetches are already turning the corner and it does appear they will not be affected by the usual summer Standard lull.

Everyone will tell you to get singles. I would wait for BfZ to buy a box (if they reprint fetches) and buy a couple boxes and trade away the other stuff.

Well, a box has the fun factor when opening it, for me opening that foil Tarmogoyf was amazing.

But otherwise, in a booster box, you pay ~$100 for $144 worth of packs for a regular set. Depending on what singles you want from a set, a booster box is usually cheeper than buying those singles. Though in a boosterbox you cannot guarantee what you can get. But you may get a foil of the most expensive card in the set and pay for the box.

So really its whether or not you want to take the risks on packs. I buy boxes because I personally have a lot of fun opening them up.

Ugh I was looking at this before I looked at the price 360 lol wtf? I'd be better off spending that money on a few boxes of the cheaper sets

If I get that I would prolly have space for a second one. Is there any box at least in the 150 dollar range that has good staples for modern.

Either 8th or 9th edition are in that range and have a descent amount of EDH/Modern Playables. I'd go 8th if you want Ensnaring Bridge/Merchant Scroll/Choke. 9th has Summer Bloom/Grave Pact/Pain Lands. Both of them have Blood Moon, Phyrexian Arena, Defense Grid, Tron Lands, Wrath of God, and City of Brass.

It really depends on what you are looking for. There are some other notables that I didn't mention as well.

You will rarely get your money back on boxes. And you probably shouldn't invest in singles as a way to make money unless you know what you're doing.

Buy a Box if you want to play limited.

Buy singles for a deck if you want to play constructed.

Buy singles for a cube if you want to play limited forever.

Buy and sell singles if you want to play the mtg finance game.

June 12, 2015 5:20 p.m.

Buying the singles is less fun, but you at least know what you're getting and getting into for that matter.

Buying a booster box is like buying a box of chocolates - you never know what you're gonna get. Take that for what it's worth.

You're better off buying singles.

Unless you really know what you're doing and have a very good knowledge of multiple formats and a pulse beyond what the normal player base knows you are going to lose more than $200 on the finance game. I've seen several people at my stores go for broke on stuff and struck out hard. From your history of not in depth format knowledge it would be a huge waste of time and money for you.

Just buy a box of Battle for Zendikar when it comes out and start your speculating from there. If anything you got a box to draft with your friends and you got to try your hand with everything.

June 12, 2015 6:39 p.m.

Coinman1863 Let me check out both boxes. That way I know what's in there so far I liked the Ensnaring Bridge due to the fact that in late game u mostly don't have a hand. I'm also gonna need o know what's edh playable. Cause I don't know much about the format.

June 12, 2015 6:51 p.m.

Yeah I nigga can go broke on buying singles with wrong trades n shit like that it always leads to being down a bit. I decided to go with one box of Ktk just because it's true my team kinda needs fetch lands. What do you guys think about a box of rtr?

June 12, 2015 6:53 p.m.

NoPantsParade says... #17

Buy the singles from RTR. You can get more stuff and less bad stuff.

If you don't need Notion Thief and Shocks, I would say no, cause thats about it modern playables as far as I know.

For the boxes 8th has Bribery, Intruder Alarm, Coat of Arms, and Merchant Scroll just to name a few EDH Staples. 9th has Greater Good, Elvish Piper, Seedborn Muse for EDH Staples. In both Phyrexian Arena, Defense Grid, City of Brass, and correcting myself Grave Pact in both. That is just a list of notable lists that could go in many lists. There are some other one that fit tribal decks that I did not name.

this is honestly the only serious IndependentMeta post i have seen, yet your grammar still makes me believe you're a troll.

@seuvius Please don't derail this thread. It's good discussion here.

@seuvius: If you have nothing constructive to post, then don't post. I'm losing my patience with the "lol what a troll" shit going on recently.

I apologize, its hard for me to take some things seriously but i realize I shouldn't be a dick about it.

June 12, 2015 10:01 p.m.

Actually that's kinda true cause I'll have 100 bucks to spend on the shock lands and I already picked up four of the ones I needed today. I still need like a few more thou. So I'm wanting to find out the shock/fetch rate in boxes.

June 13, 2015 1:27 a.m.

To add onto my suggestion of Kahns if you go the box route, it is one of the best draft formats. People will still be wanting to draft it in a couple years like Innistrad, 3 colors was fun and well done. Fetchs, Rhino, Dig, Swiftspear, Anafenza, Charms, See the Unwritten, Tasigur, Narset, Utter End and Sorin have long term value.

June 13, 2015 1:36 a.m.

Actually yeah I agree wit u man it does have a lot of good cards in the set. I think I'm just gonna pick up one of those boxes n maybe the other one of dragons of Tarkir just to get a hold of some dragonlords, anticipate, thunderbreak, foul tongue
