Buying First Booster Box

I have never bought a booster box before. Now that I have some extra cash I want to change that :P My price range is low 100-150 I'm primarily a modern player, so i was thinking of waiting until MM2 and I will have more money then. But suppose I bought a box now what would be the best one? Most interesting/ valuable cards. No RTR i am sick of buying it lol

Odds are the MM2015 booster box will be upwards of $200 a box. So you might want to stick with something recent like Khans or Theros.

Innistrad is a great one, you can grab Liliana of the Veil, Geist of Saint Traft and Snapcaster Mage if you are lucky. Also a great one to draft if you plan on opening it with friends.

Khans of Tarkir is another great one, since you will open some fetchlands. Even if they aren't on color, they are very easy to trade for the cards you need.

Economically, it's definitely not worth it to buy a box. Buying magic boxes/packs is absolutely no different from playing the lottery, Wizards denying that to the end of the earth be damned. If you are looking to build something, save up and buy the single copies. If you are determined to waste money on a box, save up for Modern Masters 2.

No, boxes are not worth it. However, I think that every player should know the feeling of having 36 boosters! It feels pretty good! Also, they are fun to open once!

Buying boxes of boosters is fun. I think the decision of whether to buy a box or not depends on your expectations. If you are expecting to pull a bunch of awesome rare cards that you really want then you shouldn't buy the box, you should buy the singles. But if the set you are looking at has a bunch of cards and abilities that you really like and want more of then you should totally consider buying the box. You should skim through the singles in the sets to see which card mechanics are most interesting to you before you purchase. Since you primarily play modern you should also look at some previous blocks and see if you can find a discounted box of boosters. Keep in mind the vast majority of the cards you are going to find will likely be common and uncommon with some good rare or mythic pulls.

Also, a friend of mine has had a lot success with finding high quality cards in the fat packs but this may just be dumb luck. That's really what it boils down to with booster packs.

Opening a bunch of packs is definitely fun and it definitely feels also to find your own planeswalkers and chase foils. I can't deny this as it's something i've experienced. At the same time, there is ALSO a feeling of disappointment when it's all said and done, especially if you DON'T hit anything worth much. $100-150 dollars is a lot to some people, and not much to others, but a loss of money still is a loss of money no matter who you are and it usually doesn't feel great.

@ kyuuri117 I totally agree. There is a high potential for disappointment with booster boxes. But that totally depends on the persons expectations of what they are going to find and the price they paid. Singles can be pretty expensive as well and you can potentially sell 1-3 rares and recoup the cost of your box.

Go for Innistrad, one of the best sets to draft, and you can hit big value.

Also Khans while it is still in standard, the simple fact it contains fetches will boost its price immensely when it rotates out.

Save for MM2. You will have a chance at so many great cards and if you're already a modern player it cant hurt to get a crack at Snapcasters, Tarmogoyfs, Geists, or any other modern staples that could potentially see reprint. Don't buy a box just to say you bought a box.

Sure you may not get anything fantastic in your box of MM2 but odds are you'll get your money back in cards and also get things you can use/trade in your preferred format. If you can save enough by time it's released you could buy a case, and either open them all or just open one or two and sell the rest at a later date.

@PreZchoICE1 Unfortunately, Snapcasters ,Geists and Lili will not be included in MM15, they have already stated that Innistrad block will not be getting reprints.

@kyuuri117 keep trusting everything Wizards says implicitly. Things do change, like when staples from Innistrad start to climb towards/upwards of $50.

kyuuri117 says... #14

...the reason the innistrad stapes are rising is because people realize they aren't getting a reprint. And wizards has not shown any reason to not trust them on this matter.

agreed, most definitely on why they're climbing however I think there's many reasons not to trust implicitly whats being said until the spoiler/set is released in full.
