Canada's Economy

Is anyone else getting jipped out in prices in terms of Canada's economy? Currently the exchange rate is $1 CAD = $0.86 US. 14% difference! Just last year it was about a 6% difference! I've taken a ~$40 hit with my last 3 online orders because of Canada's economy. I could have bought a Bitterblossom with that money.

It's because of the Russian thing I believe. Such a stupid fucking move.

@miracleHat It's usually the other way around, and by usually I mean almost always lol.
But it is pretty damn rough.

If anything it's saving you money. Both LGSes and online merchants (like Wizard's Tower) tend to base their prices on SCG prices anyhow - so if they're charging C$5, and SCG is charging US$5, you're saving money.

Which doesn't really work if your LGS doesn't have the cards you want. In fact, in comparison on prices, my LGS didn't have the Goblin Rabblemaster s I needed, Mana Confluence s, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth s, Caves of Koilos es nor Battlefield Forge s. That right there (at the time) was around $70 of missing product.
Now if I compared my LGS's price without those products and the TCGplayer price with those products, my LGS was still around $7 more expensive (TCG $121 LGS $129). So I saved around $80 because I bought through TCGplayer.
If we incorporate the 14% in economy differences to the TCG price and the extra $70 of missing product from my LGS if they did have everything, TCG player would be at ~$138 while my LGS would be at ~$200. Oh, and did I forget to mention the 12% tax that would get added on to that if I shopped at my LGS?

You're just on the wrong side of the country, I suppose. :P
October 7, 2014 5:13 a.m.
Femme_Fatale very valid points, I think I may just be lucky, we have multiple Local shops in close proximity, so typically if I cant find the card I need I just have to shop around a bit.
Otherwise we have a large community that typically I can trade for what I need with.
Guess I am spoiled :P

Fuck no, I will not live in USA. Almost every girl I know who lives in USA has been raped, abused or assaulted. I can maybe make an exception for cities really close to the border, but I will vehemently refuse to go any further down. I have never even so much as vacationed, or even visited family in USA. ... Then again, I don't even think I've ever stepped foot on non-Canadian soil before.
October 7, 2014 7:16 a.m.
Wait, So Femme_Fatale. your not in the states, Or Canada?
Is there even other countries?
lol, Jk but now i'm curious, What country you in?
October 7, 2014 8:53 a.m.
Also, I will say, If you really really want some cards from Canada, Just ask me. I can shop around and ship them out cheaper then ordering them from a site. (I do have a pretty good trade reputation on the site)
Might take a little bit longer to find the cards, but if you don't want to get gouged then lemmie know.
I'm a nice guy, I don't mind helping the fellow tapped out community

Yes I live in Canada. I thought that was pretty obvious. And thanks for the offer, I'll do a price comparison with you some time.
October 7, 2014 3:45 p.m.
Wait, then how are you getting US money? Do you work across the border?
Lol I'm confused.
But yeah, anytime you wanna price compare lemme know!

Everything priced on a USA site is priced in $USA, then paypal and credit card companies use the current market exchange rate between $USA and $CAD to make up for the price. Hence the 14% increase in everything.
October 7, 2014 4:22 p.m.
I misread this from the very first post lmao. Derp.
I know your feels being Canadian as well, one thing I find that saves me lots is just trading on here. Screw exchange rate. the mid prices are the only exhange number I care about =P
I realize it's tricky putting your faith into the users but it have paid off ten fold for me. I can't count how many times I've pulled cards I don't need/want only to just post them on here and trade them straight away. It really is a great community to do business with.
Shipping from Canada is cheap too. I've sent cards to Finland for 3-4 bucks so that definitely beats out USD to CAN exchange rates.

I guess I should get to trading online ... I have about $3,000 worth of stuff I won't use. I'm slowly adding it all to TCGplayer collection though, I find I like how I can keep track of EVERY card I own and their status in that regard.
October 7, 2014 7:33 p.m.
Do eeet, It's totally worth it, and helps to build some great relationships with people, I've come to talk with slovakattack and Dave quite frequently Sorc13 is a good friend of mine, But he only uses the site to balance his landbase.
And having your card database uploaded to TCG just makes it that much easier for you.

In response to your post about why you'd never live in AmericaWhat a completely idiotic, gnorant thing to say...
October 7, 2014 10:49 p.m.
Femme_Fatale says... #23
That's not completely idiotic xlaleclx. It is actually VERY relevant. I know guys don't really care about those things on a daily basis, but quite frankly, as a girl those things are on the top of the list of things I worry about. I have not once said that Canada is free of that, but the fact that of the some 42 USA girls I'm good friends with, 34 of them have been the victim of one or more of those serious cases. Most of the ones that haven't had that happen to them live close to the CAD-USA border. That is more than enough evidence for me to try and live south.
October 7, 2014 11:17 p.m.
xlaleclx Not really....... Its their right to have their own opinions, and thats that. I am Canadian, and I would not want to live anywhere else. I assume that your American, and would not want to live anywhere else.... These are opinion's or personal preferences. This is not only the Internet, but the 21st century in general people are allowed to have these. Calling someone out on their choices is where being ignorant comes in......
October 8, 2014 2:19 a.m.
Actually I'm Canadian.
Not leaving Canada because you think you'll be raped if you do isn't a very healthy way to think though.
October 8, 2014 8:03 a.m.
Anyways, if you're not going to leave Canada then buy stuff from Canada. It's ridiculous to Complain about the Canadian economy as you're buying from America instead of Canada and hurting our economy.
October 8, 2014 8:09 a.m.
I'm Canadian, and I still find it cheaper to buy from the US...
I just bought 4x Marsh Flats
on SCG @ $24.99 US each.
After shipping, it came to $103.05
After conversion to Canadian funds, it came to $119.02cdn
Had I purchased from facetofacegames.com or wizardtower.com they would have been $29.99 each...
For 4 it would have been $119.96
I still would have had to have it shipped, and I would have had to pay taxes.
After everything, it would have been $119.02cdn from SCG or about $140cdn from locations in Canada.
If my LGS had them in stock, I probably could have gotten them for $25 each, tax included... but most cards I'm after are rarely in stock at my LGS.
If Canadian Customs flags the shipment I may have to pay duty on the package, but it would still be no worse than having purchased from within Canada.

Are you meeting people on rape victim chat rooms?
That is a pretty outrageous ratio.
October 8, 2014 9:14 p.m.
Femme_Fatale says... #32
It's a result of the kinds of people I befriend Didgeridooda. Even the male ratio is pretty "absurd" from a regular person's standards. I understand that this scews the credibility of my saying that as a counter-argument to living down in the USA, but considering that I'm very much like the people I befriend, (just without those terrible experiences), I feel that I'd fall the same fate as them. Obviously there are counter-counter-arguments to this style of thinking, but I won't go into detail with them.

Didgeridooda says... #33
I clearly do not know what kind of person you are, but I would think knowing that information could keep you out of those situations.
There are many very nice places in the states, as well as many places I would not go. I respect your desire to live in your country, but it seemed that you were insinuating things about mine.
October 8, 2014 9:43 p.m.
This is has got to the point where it could turn into a very ugly thread. Why not just disregard that aspect and get back on course with the economic discussion rather then personal preferences of place to live.
I am living in the east coast of Canada and though the prices can some times get pretty steep if something is high in demand, we have a very solid community and always lots of places to buy, borrow or trade what is needed to finish a deck. I cant remember the last time I played a FNM, Gameday or other tournament needing cards to finish a deck.
I personally, have never needed to purchase online so am oblivious to prices other then local 3 or 4 shops. The fact that I only run standard may have alot to do with that though :P I am sure if I wanted to run some Legacy builds I may need to explore online markets.

Fair enough.
I have traded with someone in Canada before. Shipping was a bit expensive, and they almost would not let me send it. I am sure it depends on the clerk you deal with, but some do not seem to know exactly what to do.
I have heard of far more expensive countries to play MTG in though. I believe playing overseas is pretty expensive. (Australia, Europe, ect)
