anybody else encounter these new commander decks costing 80$?

I got them all at my LGS for $25 each. Their business is strong enough that they can sell below MSRP.

I refuse to shop at an LGS that sells new Magic products for higher than MSRP. If a store feels they can charge me $50 for something that is suggested at $30 then they're either trying to compensate for a failing business, or they're trying to rip me off.

@SharuumNyan I completely agree with you. I'm not going to pay $50-60 for something with an MSRP of $30... that's just bad business, and I don't like getting ripped off.

My LGS is selling them for MSRP too, and actually kept all in stock for a couple days except the Grixis one (which sold out before noon release day, apparently). They couldn't guarantee if they will be able to restock them though, which is a danged shame. They always sell packaged product at MSRP on release day and as long as the product remains in print, but they don't always permit preorders because they have a hard time getting stock.

Reading the above comments, I suspect I'm spoiled.

The real bother here is that Wizards keeps stock so limited. For a lot of these sets, lately (the Realms sets, Modern Masters, Commander 2013) they seem to supply the LGS's distributors with far less than demand.

I've been finding them at local big-box retailers and at my LGS for MSRP. As for the scarcity of the Grixis one...that's what happens when they put 2 cards worth $40 together into something that retails for a good amount less...people buy them because of profit. For me, buying the Grixis deck, selling 2 cards, and still having a very near complete commander deck for free just made economic sense. And I've seen the deck without those two cards selling for about $20 on the secondary market. As for the other 4 decks...I've had no problem finding them at all. I picked up Grixis, Naya, and Esper, and still see plenty of the other two around. It seems like many people are in areas with much higher demand, though.

Prices have been dropping around Ontario for 49$ with mind seize at 59$ and that red white one at 39$. Waiting for a bit more of a price drop hope to get one soon :)

I can tell you from a store operators perspective (cuz thats what i am) that whats killing the price is sites like starcitygames where they are all about profit and the LGS's pull alot of their prices from them directly which makes sales boost at the big box stores. I still sell all mine at $35 each cuz we still buy them at $20 a piece. The crap thing about it is players try to make a profit on each one which is killing their LGS. Have a talk with your LGS and see if they will drop the price, theres no reason to buy them for $50.

@MrKnify 401 Games is charging 35/35/45/45/55 so yeah it looks like it is stabilizing at least a little. They are also still selling all 5 at 177 which is still 40 bucks cheaper than buying all 5 individually.

@Devonin yeah, wish I lived there. the local area here is not as hospitable.

@MrKnify Well work out the price difference on those prices versus what you can get, and if you think shipping to you is less than the price gap, I can pick them up for you and toss them in the mail.

Glad to hear CoolStuffInc getting some postive reviews. I'm inquiring about writing some articles for them, and apparently they pay out in CSI credit.

Suggestions for what I should spend my first "paycheck" on? I only really play Standard at the moment.

Wal-Mart and Target both selling them for $30 and every game store here but one also selling them for $30. The other one is selling them for $50 for the Bant, Jund and Naya with the Grixis and Esper going for $75 and $65 respectively.

rant of the day, ebay people trying to sell them for $30+ without baleful strix or TNN, i understand people doing this bc they want the TNN and the baleful, but im making the assumption these are the people also buying them for $30 out of every big box store,

i dont care about TNN but im not paying $35 for something that person bought for less, and took all the money out of, id understand $10 or something but TNN is sold out and at $50 on SCG

I'm guilty of cherrypicking the money cards out of two decks for a couple of friends who didn't wanna fork over the retail price. I bought 'em for MSRP & got $15 for each, but I can see as high as $20 being reasonable, given that it's nearly a whole premade deck.

Related rant of the day:

Set up a trade of Verdant Catacombs for TNN (My TNN).

Guy agrees, we exchange addresses, and then he goes "Hey, if you haven't cracked the deck yet, how about the deck for the Catacombs?"

So I'm -already- down cash value on the trade, and would I be so kind as to throw in the other 99 cards and extra shipping cost? Ridiculous!

November 20, 2013 1:02 a.m.

@Devonin: You should call him on it. That's a bullshit offer; the deck also contains Baleful Strix and Sol Ring , not to mention any other cards. Not fair to you at all.

I have a feeling it's the same user that wanted a bunch of Mind Seize decks from me.

Honestly its supply and demand on these. The Grixis deck has a single card that sells for over $35 dollars right now so the price is going to go up to sell the set. If not the shop keeper can open the set and sell the single card for the same price. If people didnt pay $35 for that card then it would not have driven the whole cost of the deck up.

BE TEE DOUBLE-YOU

From Mark Rosewater's Tumblr:

coleman984 asked: There are rumors swirling around the net that Commander 2013 will be limited supply akin to that of Modern Masters is this true?

MaRo: Absolutely not. We will reprint Commander 2013 if the current supply does not meet demand.

In other words, I'd advise people to not purchase any of the 2013 Commander decks for more than the MSRP. Furthermore, I'd also refrain from purchasing high-end singles, since their value will most likely go down as more Commander 2013 is printed.
