is it just me or has the cost of stand jumped up to good modern deck prices?

seuvius says... #2

Idk a good modern deck can cost around $1000-$2000,I couldn't ever imagine standard getting that pricey

If you buy the most expensive version of every card in your deck, including freaking guru basic lands, then yeah.

Nowhere near as expensive as it used to be.

seuvius Is I remember correctly, standard during Innistrad/Return to Ravnica was pretty ridiculous with the majority of the meta being three color midrange decks.

But yeah, I don't think it's quite that expensive. Good, competitive modern decks lie between 500-800 dollars and upwards (they can be lower as well, but on average), where as standard is 200-500 currently for tier one builds.

Competitive modern decks, average price is around $1,000 - $1,500 for anything containing and/or , and $500-$1,000 in anything not containing one of those colours. Unless you go , then it is a hell lot more expensive. Liliana of the Veil , Dark Confidant , Tarmogoyf , Snapcaster Mage , Vendilion Clique and on occasion, Bitterblossom and Cryptic Command . I basically said the entire format's money cards in one deck-list.

A playset of Goyfs costs more than just about any Standard deck. There's really no comparison between Standard and Modern cost, assuming you're talking about competitive decks. Sure, you could build modern burn for $150, and a Standard deck could easily go $500. But most serious Modern decks run $700-800 minimum, and up to $2000+.

I'm building finishing up my BUG control deck,I have the decklist on my page, and its extremely pricey so I can definitely validate Femme_Fatales statement lol

Standard rotates much more frequently than Modern. And Modern only rotates...wait, never?

I'd rather buy and trade for a $500 Modern deck that I can still play five years from now, versus a $300 Standard deck that I won't be able to use and will be worth $50 two years out.

Hell, I still play the same Legacy Goblin deck I did a decade ago. I think the only thing that changed was Cavern of Souls and adding Thalia, Guardian of Thraben . And it's still a competitive and viable Legacy deck.

Standard really feels like I'm just pissing time and money away.

I play mostly standard for the moment, but that's because my local shops all play standard and not modern :( i as well would want to rock Merfolk and not have to ever spend much money on it again, but instead I'm stuck with standard every year. My goal is always just to "make my money back" on prize winnings with the said deck I am playing. Last standard season I spent about 160 on standard decks, and probably got about 200 dollars worth of prizes off of playing and winning with them. Now, I am dropping a good 300 dollars on Jeskai Tempo. But I'm also planning on playing in some GPs, PTQs, Invitationals and Opens this year so we'll see :D

Standard is pricey at the moment, if you want top tier. I am currently running 2 decks both of which in the $300-$500 range, but in both decks the lions share of the $$$ is held by maybe an 1/6th - 1/4 of the deck.... Thats just the way Standard is at the moment. Pretty well ever top tier decklist has its share of money in it.

Still not expensive enough for me to jump to Modern / Legacy though lol

it just seems all the deck lists ive been looking at for ideaas are around $800 for standard. honestly i think id rather dump that into modern and build a good deck

Dalektable says... #14

saltyk Have you been looking exclusively at three color goodstuff midrange decks? Lol. But for 800 dollars I'd much rather get into modern, but you can build some of the tier one standard decks for 200-300 dollars.

xGhostx says... #15

You can build current tier 1 standard for actually much cheaper then that.

Mono Black Aggro is consistent and always a threat and it can be built for like $50-$75 depending on what you need. Reallly the most expensive thing in it is Bloodsoaked Champion lol

I'm going to give Standard a try this go around. going to do a R/U/W artifact type of thing but the white splashed in so I can throw in Deflecting Palm and Mantis Rider . So far it hasn't been too expensive, just the Scuttling Doom Engine , got the rider's for cheap at presale.

Modern decks I have looked into though, no where near the price that this standard homebrew I got going on.

Dalektable says... #17

A good mono black aggro deck is closer to 200 dollars when you add in Thoughtseize and fetch lands (which I don't think are needing, but the top lists are running them)

October 4, 2014 2:54 p.m.

xGhostx says... #18

Dalektable Yes, but the budget top tier builds do not need them. As you said the fetchlands are not needed per se in the build, and Thoughtseize can be cycled out for Despise and/or Duress to stay budget.

sylvannos says... #19

I would think Mono-Black Aggro would need fetches so it could play Murderous Cut . Unconditional removal that can often be cast for a single black mana? Yes please!

xGhostx says... #20

sylvannos You are not incorrect :)

Its like taking a look at Money Build VS Budget Build. The money build will 90% of the time be better due to having the power cards that allow it to do the things it needs to do more efficiently. Thats not to stay the same cannot be done in a budget version of the deck, it just may not go off as consistently.

October 4, 2014 5:33 p.m.

The only time I can think of when that statement was true was when Jund in INN/RTR was basically Modern Jund minus fetches and Goyfs and easily cost $1200.
