Phaetion says... #1

Ugh...I wonder if it's that menace again. If it is, he should be brought to justice, and all the cards re-distributed.

PistonGolem says... #2

WotC really needs to at least regulate this card market, that way, buyouts will be illegal.

July 6, 2016 10:06 a.m.

DrFunk27 says... #3

Will never happen. It's the way of unregulated second hand markets. We just need to be ahead of the buyouts. Anything on the RL is a target so trade or buy now. It's only going to get worse.

July 6, 2016 10:08 a.m.

iBleedPunk says... #4

Phaetion that seems a tad absurd

July 6, 2016 12:39 p.m.

Phaetion says... #5

Faceless_Being: I know might have been a bit hyperbole there, but these buyouts are getting annoying, and I know I'm not the only one.

Next on the News Flash: Academy Rector now $100.

GoldGhost012 says... #6

Pretty sure it was that same guy, since he was recently interviewed and mentioned City of Traitors being on his radar.

July 6, 2016 12:49 p.m.

00xtremeninja says... #7

..sigh..

Someone buyout Scourge of Fleets so all of those that I opened will be worth something

July 6, 2016 12:51 p.m.

Lightpulsar9 says... #8

So apparently a the City of Traitors and Serra's Sanctum buyouts are all by the same person. This video by a youtube channel called mtglion talks about it a bit.

July 6, 2016 1:01 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #9

Lightpulsar9 You're like two weeks late to the party man. He's been buying out a bunch of stuff.

July 6, 2016 1:19 p.m.

DrFunk27 says... #10

This guy will continue to buyout cards because he's flipping them for profit and investing in more RL cards. Look, if you need a card you better buy it now. If you can't, then you probably will miss out. It sucks but that's how these things work. Sorry but it's life.

July 6, 2016 2:17 p.m.

Unforgivn_II says... #11

Wizards can't regulate the market.... but they can reprint the reserved list. I was in favor of the list for a long time, but now it's getting out of hand

July 6, 2016 3:21 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #12

Players can also regulate the Market. Mass exodus out of eternal. Have the population refuse to pay 100s for bought out cards. We as players need to stand together and say enough is enough.

July 6, 2016 3:30 p.m.

DrFunk27 says... #13

That's also true Vampire. Maybe that's what we need in order to see change. It's really annoying.

July 6, 2016 3:39 p.m.

00xtremeninja says... #14

however, it is going to be next to impossible to get them to revoke the RL. Sure the community at large could sign petitions and all that stuff, but on what basis do we have? "hey, your game is becoming too expensive for people to play!"

"so sorry to hear that, but we at Wizards really only care about Standard and Limited. While we acknowledge there are other formats like Vintage, Legacy, and Modern, we don't design cards for those formats in mind. Everyone can get into Standard when they want! Please remember, we have no control over the popularity of certain cards and can not go back and fix low print runs from sets in the late 1990's"

July 6, 2016 4:08 p.m.

I mentioned this in the thread specific to these most recent buyouts; maybe it was just missed or I'm completely wrong, but I'll reiterate my point here:

The price factor might not be the biggest issue in this case. If these buyouts expand to a larger percetnage of the card supply (of an individual card), as well as new buyouts on separate cards, there will be a supply limit. There will always be someone willing to pay any amount for a card if they really need it, but what happens if they physically cannot / have a very difficult finding that card for any price?

The reserve list was created to protect the investment of collectors and high-end players, but does this also include the investors? Up until now there has been a very subtle difference between collectors and investors, but this difference will grow should the buyouts continue.

I think that the intent of Reserve List should be revisited if it becomes more of a tool for investors and less of a protection for collectors.

DrFunk27 says... #16

Also to note that the guy bought out Gold Bordered versions of the cards too. What a dick. So much for starting a Canadian Highlander deck.

July 6, 2016 5:27 p.m.

In case you missed it.

Conversation on the buyouts is over here

July 6, 2016 5:44 p.m.

VampireArmy says... #18

I mean it's not about wotc. It's about the community at large. It will take just about everyone to stand up to buyouts. You can't force them not to happen but if you punish them by refusing to buy or trade for them.

July 6, 2016 5:45 p.m.

00xtremeninja says... #19

That's a huge dick move to buy out the gold border cards.

July 6, 2016 10:59 p.m.

alulien says... #20

It's shit like this that drives the demand for high-quality proxies. It seems a real issue, especially when it's RL cards...

July 6, 2016 11:06 p.m.

That's a great point, alulien. I was just talking to someone tonight about this. The fakes are really close to being indistinguishable, so there's even more of an incentive to forgo real RL cards altogether with these buyouts happening. This is another consequence that might force WotC to do something.

July 6, 2016 11:44 p.m.

grumbledore says... #22

I think another option would be for the community to start embracing reserved list free legacy. Fuck those douchenozzles.

July 7, 2016 12:20 a.m.

In other news, Ancient Tomb (which is NOT on the RL) has doubled in price to over $30 on tcgplayer. I'm guessing it has to do with Eldrazi Stompy in legacy winning this past weekend.

Infamous Price Gouger Martin Shkreli Wants To Collect Rare Magic: The Gathering Cards

Im thinking we will begin to see insane spikes in the coming months.

"He's been told black lotus cards are very valuable", what a freakin moron. I gotta go read that thread and see all the "advice" he's getting.

July 7, 2016 2:15 p.m.

PartyJ says... #26

Do you all notice how the bubble gets inflated. And every bubble will pop... eventually.

July 7, 2016 2:20 p.m.

sirbar says... #27

He is collecting lotuses. People can only dream of getting one as is, if he spikes the price he will have no one to sell them to.

Also someone tried to sell him a rare pepe on twitter for $200K and he asked if it was tournament legal. Got a chuckle from that.

July 7, 2016 2:39 p.m.

00xtremeninja says... #28

so it said that he owes people he hired to make a team on LOL, is he thinking that he can buy up all of the most expensive cards, hoard them, and go wreck shop on tournaments? You can have all of the Goyf's you want, but there still is an element of luck and strategy/skill needed to play this game.

July 7, 2016 2:49 p.m.

If anyone knows where he lives and it isn't too out of their way to go to his house, could someone please hit Martin over the head with a baseball bat?

July 7, 2016 2:49 p.m.

Slowgod says... #30

Yeah he will have nobody to sell to or play with and will suck either way. I wonder how many fake cards he will buy for real prices.

July 7, 2016 2:54 p.m.

00xtremeninja says... #31

Slowgod, I thought the same thing.

Go spend $200 on proxies, offer to sell them to him at a 5,000% markup. Then he can see what it feels like to get burned.

July 7, 2016 2:56 p.m.

I thought he was in jail?

July 7, 2016 2:58 p.m.

TheHelvault says... #33

If he's not in jail, someone give me his twitter handle and I'll try to hit him up with a Black Lotus Proxy

July 7, 2016 3:26 p.m.

I messaged Martin on twitter telling him I could get him a black lotus for $3000 and he says he's interested

Guess this means I should find out how bad he'll sue me first

claim to be oblivious and that when you bought it a long time ago the person told you it was real.

phc says... #40

He's talking about getting Trump and Kanye into the game now.

July 7, 2016 9:43 p.m.

Why does he want to buy into Magic cards, of all things?

July 7, 2016 10:25 p.m.

Lightpulsar9 says... #42

Magic cards, especially those on the RL, hold value. You can buy up cards in order to store your money, and have those as almost liquid assets. It helps with taxes and stuff since magic cards aren't like stocks.

July 7, 2016 10:30 p.m.

Slowgod says... #43

If you can only play a few BL at a time, what is to stop someone from buying a few and then burning/destroying all of the rest? Yeah you can play a few at a time, just build a 60 card deck of them and you will beat everybody with the most expensive pile of cardboard ever known to man. Oh he also got 5x Mox I've never heard of this guy before, but damn he is one rich idiot.

July 7, 2016 10:35 p.m.

WotC has done a great job at maintaining a constant yet manageable bubble, which is described really well in this NPR segment. These schmucks threaten to pop that bubble. Not ok.

July 7, 2016 10:35 p.m.

PistonGolem says... #45

I wish their idea of printing more cards if the stores price gouge would have been used on Eternal Masters...

July 7, 2016 11:03 p.m.

The_Raven says... #46

Can this guy seriously make an impact on the cards and their value? I mean, I think he said he would spent 250.000 $ on cards. That's about 25 BL. That's a very small portion, when there is around 10.000 BL out there....

July 11, 2016 4:37 p.m.

mtgThaen says... #47

Maybe not lotus, but LED, Tabernacle, Moat...all significantly cheaper - for now.

July 11, 2016 4:44 p.m.

Profet93 says... #48

Does anybody know of a website that gives you the list of the highest priced cards and is updated in realtime?

July 11, 2016 4:49 p.m.

kengiczar says... #49

I know everybody is saying that the chances of a full on market collapse of MTG cards is unlikely but if he buys out all of the old reserved cards I fully expect people to stop giving a damn about them.
