Didn't realize a new set is coming out next month already

As with all new sets, the format gets shook up for a bit, effecting the pricing for cards and sometimes invalidating some decks.

So i'm stuck not knowing if i should continue to make mono blue devotion (67/75), or just hold off until the set is released to see if it's still worth it, or to trade the cards off while its a top deck and prices are still higher.

Also have monoblack devotion and GR devotion fully completed. Sort of in the same boat with them also. Just looking for a little input on which to scrap or keep. Cause ill be going to an SCG open and I'm usually able to find a group of people that will take standard for modern even without a premium or anything. Or could part them out on here for your guys.

I hope Standard gets better; it's so bad right now.

Define "bad" zandl; I'm curious about your perspective.

The only thing bad that i can see is that its kind of the same decks winning all the time, but at the same time there is really good sideboard cards for each of them, ie Gainsay ,Dark Betrayal ,Lifebane Zombie ,Mistcutter Hydra , for any blue, black, green devotion decks and hydra is pretty good against the control most of the time, I think its pretty even now like a rock, paper, scissors format

At my local shop the meta is esper but its not the only winning deck build lots of RG as well.

This is why I prefer Modern and Legacy...

Best bet is to keep up with spoilers and articles.

Personally, I think that the Devotion builds are just going to get stronger. Way I see it, we will find better options for the devotion builds, like monoblue may end up with better plays than Frostburn Weird . It works for now, but think how much better the UU 2 drop spot can get when we have 2 drops like Voice of Resurgence and Scavenging Ooze , which are 2 of the most powerful 2 drops in standard at the moment.

Devotion is one of the new mechanics in this set, and I doubt it very much if it will be going anywhere. If anything, I think the addition of the multi color gods will see some of the devotion decks splashing for a second color, but overall, I do see your investment in the devotional decks as pretty solid at the moment. Honestly, archetypes usually don't die out as a block expands, but get better and acquire better threats and answers over the course of a block expanding. For Theros, I don't see devotion going anywhere, just evolving. Also, it all depends on what cards you are missing from your monoblue, ryuzaki32667. For example, if you need the Jaces still, hunt them down. He will retain value and probably not be replaced since a lot of decks run him and he generates a good amount of devotion for his cmc. I also feel solid choices to hunt down would be Thassa and Master. I would say you know what the obvious "still be good" cards are and what may not be such a wise investment right now. On the up side...Masters are the cheapest they have ever been now :)

Hope this helps.

Yea i'm missing 1 Jace, 3 Thassa. 3 Tidebinder Mage, and 1 Rift. And yea I complety forgot that with a new set I get new tools and options for existing decks.

I agree with zandl, I temporarily quit Standard because it was just so boring.

@zandl/Jp3ngu1nb0y (could you please make your account name shorter?), i didn't realize it until i just read what you said about standard that i too quit. The decks are pretty much all the same, MB devotion, M Blue devo, esper control, R/x aggro. I have always liked how in modern, there are a lot of decklists (and sort of the same in legacy). I would want to join standard again, just if it becomes exciting and not as dull.

What do you mean "already" lol it'll be about 4 month gap between sets when it releases.

Standard right now seems like it's very dominated by aggro/midrange decks at the moment. Once more of theros is released, more tools will be available for control and combo, and things should even out. I still think Mono-blue devotion will be strong after the new release, but would hold off on completing your decklist until you see some new cards. I've never seen a deck stay the exact same after a new set is released.

I got so bored of standard, but my modern and EDH decks really benefited from it! I feel like devotion will get better. But I think (hopefully) white will see the biggest boost. White currently lacks the good cards that Blue and black have for devotion.

The new set Born of the Gods will be legal in standard next month, i think Feb 7th, not sure, and the cards im missing are some Thassa which will still be in it as a 4 of and 1 jace, the little mages are cheap so wont be the end of the world if i get them and then dont need them

White has a token producer of Evangel of Heliod buts its no where near the level of Master of Waves as his tokens can become bigger and he costs 2 less to cast, other thoughts ive had about mono white devotion would be to ramp into Angel of Serenity like early and such, BBD from SCG made a ''sunny delight'' that did that but he was advocating Heliod, God of the Sun and wanted it to be a real threat in standard

I dislike Standard right now because the meta was figured out two months ago. Nothing has really changed since then and nothing will until new cards out.

There's no way you can possibly innovate and be successful right now because Black Devotion, Blue Devotion, U/W Control, and G/R are simply the best decks you can build with the available cards.

I've never liked Standard right after rotations, though. If a set comes out that has very clear strategies and obvious cards, those factors combine with the relatively small card-pool and make the format very inflexible and stale.

A new set coming out won't shake things up as much as an entire block rotating out, and that won't happen for another 9-10 months. The two current blocks will be be complete after May, and you'll have 4-5 months of that - with a little hiccup in July for M15 - to decide what to trade/sell off of your RtR cards before they rotate out and drop in price.

p.s. To all the people complaining about how Standard is boring and it's just the same 4 netdecks every time -

That's how it's always been! I remember is Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, everyone was using U/B Faeries or Doran Rock (or RDW, though, occassionally there would be R/G or W/G tribal aggro decks: Elves, Goblins, Kithkin); in Shards, it was all Jund Midrange, Bant something-or-other, or Esper Control; though, Cruel (Grixis) Control did well too, and so on. ..

You can either strive (and pay big $$) to win by buying one of four expensive tier 1 netdecks that everyone else is using, or get creative and go rogue with a home brew, having a lot of fun, but probably not winning much.

I do Standard once-in-a-while just to get a feel for the meta and see the top decks in action, but I'd prefer if Modern got more popular, or if more game shops would offer other formats more often. Has anyone tried a Block Constructed tournament? What about a Pauper-Highlander Two-Headed Giant single-elimination run?

Meh, I'll get off my soap-box now . . .

"That's how it's always been!"

Barefaced lie. Clearly, you didn't play Standard before Theros. That was one of the healthiest formats I think Standard's ever seen. I brewed every single week and did well with whichever 60 cards I put into sleeves. When you can do that, you know Standard's good. When you can't (like right now), you know it's far worse than normal.

"That's how it's always been!"

Thats the gods honest truth. Your expierience may have differed but at my local shops they've always had the same meta. Even go to ones four hours away and see the exact same decks.

You shouldn't expect to see different decks just by moving geographically. There's this thing called the internet where anybody anywhere can see the winningest decks in Standard.
