So I play using elvish mystics and I got 2 from FNM but I wanted a playset. Now I don't watch promos much but why is this little elf 5 dollars? Is this normal?

Promos are pretty much always more expensive than the regular card (there are exceptions, like promo Sheoldred, Whispering One is actually easier to find than the normal one). The more popular the card, the more expensive the promo. I don't follow promos much either, so I'm not sure whether they usually go up or down at all.

Yeah, it's normal. Promo versions of cards naturally increase the value, as they become more collectible. Some promos are cheaper, because they rarely see play. Elvish Mystic is a very popular card in high demand. A good deal of serious players that not only play the game but invest in it will drop the $5 on a more collectible version of the card. Some just enjoy playing with a more valuable deck, some are looking to make a return after they're done with it.

I understand that promos are normally more expensive than the regular but .10 compared to $5 is a big difference. Thanks though.

Promos are in a MUCH more limited quantity than the standard issue version. Lets say that every shop gives out 4x Elvish Mystic FNM Promos one night a week for one month, or 16x for the month. Now, imagine there's, say, 50 Event-Hosting stores per state. 50x50=2500. 2500x16=40,000. So, according to this estimate, there's only 40k Elvish Mystic promos in the US, while there probably are millions of normal ones. Supply and demand my friend.

"50 event hosting stores per state" As a Vermonter: I wish....

Promos are more expensive for every reason that everyone has stated here but also because they are foil.

Looking on TCGPlayer.com the foil price for Elvish Mystic is ~$5 as well.

Ohthenoises 50 is a bit much... maybe 20... as a New Yorker, I'm within an hour drive of 15 stores, and that's with NYC outside of that range.

The point is, they're very rare, look cool and are foil, as well as being a playable card. This makes them significantly more expensive than the ordinary, common version

Generally speaking for cards still in standard, and close to it. Common promos are more, rare and mythic promos are less.
