Future card spike speculation thread

Economics forum

Place to speculate which cards will spike, and what is the root cause of these drastic changes.

Rules:

-When speculating on a card, also give reasons why you feel they are a prospect. This can include reasons such as reserve list, format shift, new/updated decks.

-Post the tcg mid price at the time of the speculation, so we can have a future frame of reference. Jay's prediction for an example, Leyline of the Void(7.24)

-As this is a speculation thread remember to respect others. People will disagree, but that will lead to quality discussions.

Didgeridooda says... #2

I have started seeing some reserve list cards spike now as well as the modern ones. Wanted a place to spec since I didn't want to break the rules in the other thread.

I think Helm of Obedience is a reserve card that will spike soon. (9.83 tcg mid)

For modern, Shadow of Doubt would be my guess as the next sideboard 15-20 ticket. (7.62 tcg mid)

That thread says no speculating, and so I thought I would bring it over here since that was the sole thing I wanted to talk about right now.

cough cough Tooth and Nail cough cough

Didgeridooda says... #6

Seems like it has already started to rise. Didn't you mention that one before in another thread?

Edit, yup, it was in the no spec thread. Nice one.

January 11, 2016 1:07 p.m. Edited.

Phaetion says... #7

It did rise, but it looks like a candidate for a buy-out, thus a massive price spike.

January 11, 2016 1:20 p.m.

Didgeridooda says... #8

I would also like to speculate on why these are happening. I asked if that was ok over there, but no one there said if speculating like that was ok. Since it said no speculating I started this.

Of course there are many factors. For the older ones, I would say that those reserve list cards are on the rise due to the holidays. Since so many people have started playing EDH, staples make great gifts, and many of those are on the reserve list.

January 11, 2016 1:20 p.m.

Phaetion says... #9

Phyrexian Altar wasn't on the Reserved List though.

I do wonder why it keeps happening though. Why in the last couple of years as opposed to previous ones?

January 11, 2016 1:27 p.m.

Didgeridooda says... #10

Scratch that, I am wrong. Why do you think it spiked then?

I have no idea. :/

My bad @Didgeridooda. I misinterpreted the intention of this thread :)

Didgeridooda says... #13

All good. I want to put it all in one, and find myself bouncing between the two. So I guess unless others want to spec, I will leave this one alone.

I could sticky this as the speculation thread. You'd need to add rules to the first post, though.

Shocklands will trend upwards soon. The jump could be pretty drastic, instead of slow rise like most predict.

I think the Swords are a good spec target. They haven't moved much, and they are all pretty rare and worth playing in SBs and EDH. Plus, if Stoneforge actually manages to get unbanned, they will skyrocket.

I'm actually a fan of picking up the Modern Event deck too. At $95, it has insane value right now.

Jay says... #17

Leyline of the Void is one I hope I can acquire before it gets bought out or something. Eldrazi likes it, and it's a staple sideboard piece. On the topic of voids, I would keep an eye on Chalice of the Void, especially if Bloom doesn't git hit with a ban.

Aven Mindcensor is a good target for buyouts too, I reckon. Especially after Gaddock.

Leyline of Sanctity ($10.46):

-Very useful and versatile sideboard staple, plus it's recently been reprinted and is at it's lowest in a while

January 11, 2016 3:36 p.m.

DrFunk27 says... #19

I think Damping Matrix could see a huge gain. It's a rare from fifth dawn, which makes it hard to find anyways. It helps with Affinity and hurts Tron and the new BW Eldrazi.

January 11, 2016 3:38 p.m.

Didgeridooda says... #20

Those are all very real possibilities. Do you really think shocks will start to spike soon though? I know they are low, but where do you think they will go?

Also, I added some rules up top.

January 11, 2016 3:39 p.m.

Monsmtg says... #21

DrFunk27 I'm actually buying copies of this card now. Seems plausible. It's from Mirrodin tho ;D

January 11, 2016 3:47 p.m.

OmegaAura113 says... #22

I think those dual lands from BFZ will go up over time...just look at the few from Scars of Mirrodin, and they don't even share the specific, tutorable land types of "plains," "forest," etc.

Another good pick would be the land Sea Gate Wreckage from Oath of the Gatewatch for it's drawing ability, and also those classic Eldrazi cards like Ancient Stirrings and Eldrazi Temple since the Eldrazi are apparently a thing again. (Personally I'm surprised that Eye of Ugin shot up so much in the five weeks since I got my copy, should've gotten more!)

January 11, 2016 3:54 p.m.

DrFunk27 says... #23

Monsmtg sorry you're right. I've seen it played a few times in the last weeks. It's a great card.

January 11, 2016 4:43 p.m.

DrFunk27 says... #24

Didgeridooda Yes, I really do think Shocks are going to spike. The issue is two-fold. 1 -- more players are picking up modern every day, and you must have shocklands to play. 2 -- they've been out of print for over 2 years now and will not see a reprint unless in a supplemental set, which really won't decrease prices much.

Based on how widely used they are in both EDH, Tiny Leaders, Modern and Casual, I see them gaining at least $10 in the next few months, and will likely double their price by Christmas.

January 11, 2016 5:02 p.m.

DrFunk27 says... #25

I think Fulminator Mage is a very good spec target with all this new Tron and Eldrazi decks circulating.

January 11, 2016 9:08 p.m.

Nemesis says... #26

I thought Fulminator Mage saw a price hike just recently though, you think it'll happen a second time?

January 12, 2016 12:24 a.m.

DrFunk27 says... #27

With how much eldrazi and tron around I can see it going back to $35. It's a 3-4 in SB so yeah it has room to move.

January 12, 2016 12:36 a.m.

j3r0me says... #28

What about the filter lands(http://lmgtfy.com/?q=filter+lands+mtg)? Especially the W/U/R ones in modern control, what with Sea Gate Wreckage now in modern?

Rayenous says... #29

I feel that Blinkmoth Nexus and Mutavault are possible fair speculations, based on the requirements of some decent cards in OGW.
Especially since they are both quite a bit lower than they have been in a while.

Inkmoth Nexus is still too high to be expected to rise, and the infect makes them less usable in decks just looking for good utility.

January 12, 2016 9 a.m. Edited.

Rayenous says... #30

I would also say Ghost Quarter, but it's not exactly an expensive/rare card... and I think there may be a reprint in SoI

January 12, 2016 9:05 a.m.

DrFunk27 says... #31

Ghost Quarter has seen far too many printings to be over $1. Foils however, that would've been a good spec.

I love mutavault as a spec. If Allies becomes a thing in Modern, you better believe it will be used. With it being reprinted over 2 years ago, I think $12 is very safe considering where we know it can go.

January 12, 2016 10:11 a.m. Edited.

Didgeridooda says... #32

Guys, when you put your specs, make sure to reference the tcg mid.

January 12, 2016 11:24 a.m.

DrFunk27 says... #33

Didgeridooda Sorry about that -- my mistake. Anyways, Mid for Mutavault is only $15 for Morningtide and $12 for M14. I can see this going to $25-30 if a tribal deck hits the Top 8.

Rayenous says... #34

... or you could just 'hover' over the link. It shows the TCG Mid and the MTGO Mid.

But I guess, there are those using Mobile devices... not sure if/how you can 'hover' on various devices.

January 12, 2016 12:01 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #35

Occasionally the prices on Tappedout aren't correct. Besides, going straight to the TCG source is like 2 extra clicks.

January 12, 2016 12:03 p.m.

Rayenous says... #36

Aren't the prices pulled directly from TCG? - If so, then if they aren't correct here, they aren't correct there.

January 12, 2016 12:07 p.m.

Didgeridooda says... #37

Sort of, there is sometimes a lag, but listing the price it is at the time you are posting will allow for us to go back through this thread in the future, and see how things have changed. It is not about knowing the current price now.

January 12, 2016 1:12 p.m.

Jay says... #38

If you're on mobile you can hold down on a card to "highlight" it so to speak, click out of the options menu and see the hoverover image.

EpicFreddi says... #39

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is "spiking" in europe. From 5 to 10 in 10 days.
TCG mid is currently 13$. But when Eldrazi will establish in modern it'll rise eventually.

January 14, 2016 9:50 a.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #40

I would like to know everyone's opinion on whether Eye of Ugin will continue to rise. It's already 5-6x what it was a few months ago.

January 14, 2016 9:55 a.m.

EpicFreddi says... #41

GoldGhost012 same thing with Urborg I guess, since its no longer a one-off.

January 14, 2016 9:56 a.m.

DrFunk27 says... #42

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is definitely on the rise. Pick them up while you can. I doubt it sees a reprint for a long while.

January 14, 2016 10:59 a.m.

Didgeridooda says... #43

Are there any other decks that are driving up speculation in modern? Also is bloom titan being suppressed because of a potential ban?

January 14, 2016 8:38 p.m.

Phaetion says... #44

Maelstrom Wanderer was almost bought out. It currently sits at ~$25.

January 15, 2016 8:07 p.m.

DrFunk27 says... #45

If Blood Moon gets the axe expect Magus of the Moon to double in price. It's not a terrible pick up right now.

January 15, 2016 8:22 p.m.

Didgeridooda says... #46

Maelstrom Wanderer is an interesting target. Curious where that one goes.

DrFunk, how likely do you think blood moon banning is?

Wos1337 Told me that Conduit of Ruin(34.95)post spike, was just bought out.

January 15, 2016 8:36 p.m. Edited.

DrFunk27 says... #47

Didgeridooda I think Blood Moon ban, along with Choke could be very likely. If I were to ban 2 cards from Modern it would be Summer Bloom and Blood Moon.

January 15, 2016 8:52 p.m.

Didgeridooda says... #48

I think that there is a bunch of sorting out to do in modern with this new set. They should hold off the bans for a little while, and see how it turns out.

Sword of the Meek(7.35) Has seen it's speculative unbanning spike?

January 15, 2016 9:04 p.m.

DrFunk27 says... #49

Didgeridooda I'm not sure I understand...they have a scheduled ban update. It's not random. The next one is coming next Monday.

January 15, 2016 9:13 p.m.

Didgeridooda says... #50

Do you not think waiting a ban period is worth it? I know they are scheduled. I just feel that nothing is deserving of a ban right now.
