I'd pick up a premade that looks cool to you, then upgrade it as you go along or switch it up as you learn the ins and outs. At least you'll have something that works smoothly for casual to some degree.
Picking up people's junk and mass extras is too much of a crapshoot and eventually they'll likely end up unused in the box you bought them in as you progress.
Just my 2 cents. The sooner you can get on the road to buying singles and brewing solid decks the better.

I should say that Cockatrice and Gatherer are great tools for brewing.

I'd have to agree with GearNoir, 90% or more of what you find in almost any bulk lot is going to be utterly unplayable trash.

ok so just finding a deck on here and buying it would probably be better

Most of the time, ebay, craigslist, and similar sites are what is going to hold most of your big bulk buys you are looking for; however, those come with a risk. I would try locally first via garage sales, card shop for rumors only, lol, and in the newspaper. I tend to make most of my deals in person with cash in hand rather than over the web, but if you like to take a chance, go for it.

For edh, I would visit edhrec.com write down the cards you are interested in and test it here or on another site before your paper purchase. This also gives you a plan for trades ahead of time of you wish to go that route.

If your on a budget, I would suggest pauper edh, where most decks are under $50.

Infect is a great build and it can be done reasonably budget then upgraded over time.

true....but there is a special place in hell for people who play infect, and/or slivers....you've been warned :)

Lol...I play an 8-rack variant, so I'm right there along side them.

8-rack's nowhere near on par with the level of vulgarity that is slivers and or infect. Nothing is to date.

My brother is a casual player. He was able to build the base of 3 decks after buying a fat pack back in Alara block. You could buy a fat pack (or bundle I think they're called now), get the card base to build 1-2 decks, then augment those decks by buying cards out of the dollar bin at your local store and trading with friends.

My comments about slivers and infect were NOT intended as an endorsement. After a few games with such things you will likely be treated as though you had Leprosy or some other horrid affliction...anyways...good luck with that.

Most LCGs (at least that I've seen) have 'treasure troves' or some other variant of 500+ commons and uncommons that they'll sell in a box cheaply - if you're just looking for a bunch of cards for casual brewing, that's probably the easiest way to go about it. The Deck Builder's Toolkit (a similar product packaged by Wizards, with some boosters as well) is another possibility.

If you're just playing casually then finding a lot on Amazon or eBay can often be enough. However I would recommend looking into various archetypes and decks (most can be found on here) and seeing what fits your budget and play-style. If your friends have competitive decks don't get frustrated by losing, just get them to buy lower key decks as you work your way up to Tournament winning decks.
I got into MTG personally with a precon Commander deck, those are fantastic for learning to play. However once you familiarize yourself with the game and the cards, buying singles (individual cards) is usually the best way to go.
