Hi everyone,
i recently started a media group online and we are preparing to host a MTG modern tourney next Saturday at a local card store. This event is non-sanctioned, and based on the player base of the area we are expecting this to be a more casual turn out. Even to this point, we have prepared 6 top tier modern proxy decks for use in the tourney. This is the first thing the store has done mtg related, its a resale store with some table space.
So here comes the main question, as a host of the event not an employee of the store we are playing at is it ok for me to participate in this event. My plan was to only participate if it was needed to fire, but wanted to discuss this topic now before it may happen.
the entry fee is $5(4 to pool, 1 to store) with some prize packs handed out to winners as well as cash. to this moment i have 6 confirmed, several maybes.
we do have the online rule database along with several long term players to help with any tricky hard to figure out rulings, but for the actual participating, is it ok for me?
what if i place in prize pay-out, what do you suggest?
i am more concerned about having a successful and fun event for all involved than anything else, so any help is welcomed.

I have arranged & hosted quite a few events at a local localtions over the last few years. I've almost always taken part myself too. It's not like you can fudge the results or have any kind of unfair advantage just because you called the group of players together. MtG is a combination of preperation, skill and luck after all.
Just be aware that as the organiser / host, there could be things that you have to deal with as well as playing your own game. If you don't feel you could multitask answering questions from another player, dealing with results and playing your own game, don't take part.
For me, if I am in a game and "admin" duties would call me away for more than a minute, I would concede the game. It's not fair on the opponent to lose sustantial game time and go to a draw because you were unavaiable (but that's just my take on it).

thanks for the feedback. My plan is to play in the event as an actual player. IF a player wins a 2 of 3 in the tournament against me they will get a little something extra.
in the event i place in the money i will either buy pizza for everyone or give it to the store. at this time i have no plan to keep any winnings, it will go to the players or to things for my channel Urban Girl Scout Media.

If I were in your position I would treat myself as the by round. I haven't been to many tournaments but I was given one by round and I was bored out of my mind so much so that I would have rather lost a round rather than not play.
So basically what I'm suggesting is that you can act as the free win for anyone who wouldn't get to play that round, that way they still get to have fun and you get to participate without it seeming biased.
