How Could MTGO Prices Be Going Down?!?!

Economics forum

Posted on June 5, 2015, 12:20 a.m. by BigFace

I've seen recently Standard and Modern cards dropping tremendously! Even the most recent block. I know meta changes reflect price change but this is across the board. No complaints from me.

Noble Hierarch 10 tix GoatBots. Used to be over 30 tix. Holy shit!Fulminator Mage 6.39 tix. Used to be like 35 tix if not mistaken.

I feel like modern masters has a bunch of influence over standard prices too for some reason. But hey, what do I know, Magic Online isn't even real.

BigFace - No need to curse and act like a kid it only makes you look worse.

Obviously Standard and Modern Prices are going down both IRL and on Mtgo because of both Modern Masters being released, and the standard rotation coming in a few months that includes Theros block.

June 5, 2015 12:32 a.m.

BigFace says... #7

PutridLeech: The fact you'd even say that makes you sound like a kid. Go respond to Turbo's comment.

ThatJunkMage: That sounds about right. I don't exactly understand what Modern Masters has on Standard but it seems it could. What was even more strange to me is that the newest block was going down considerably. I'd say a good 30-50%.

I like it.

June 5, 2015 12:38 a.m.

JakeHarlow says... #8

...some salt in this thread, I see.

Rotation and MMA2 have affected prices. The relative stabilization of the Standard meta also means prices have settled further. Could MTGO price falls also indicate a loss of interest in the medium for some players? Perhaps a noticeable number of players cashing out has contributed to dips in staple prices as well.

BigFace says... #10

JakeHarlow: I had thought about that. I'm really wondering if they are losing money/players on there client they call a 'program'. Not exaggerating--the least workable game I've ever experienced. Sad, cuz it's all I play for Magic.

kmcree: You got anything to say but to complain? Like I told the last complainer go talk to Turbo for a shrewd comment. Wrong forum? It's in the MTGO forum. It's about MTGO. You go home after you figure it out.

June 5, 2015 12:53 a.m.

JakeHarlow says... #12

Yes, MTGO has serious issues. Quality control for Wizards products has started to show big gaps lately, though. Just look at all the damaged cards being opened in MMA2. I don't know what the company's leaders are thinking, but I've got to say that as a customer, I'm beginning to feel mistreated.

Wow, BigFace. Bro I think you posted a really cool and currently relevant post... then proceeded to freak out. Think of it like this. Cursing on the internet is MUCH LIKE TALKING IN ALL CAPS. It just makes you seem far more aggressive than you may mean to be. Don't disrespect ChiefBell. He does a lot of work around this place and you are the one who couldn't handle a flippant comment without being flippant yourself.

I don't play standard but The modern prices are fluctuating all over the place.

a Week ago Cavern of Souls was $18. Then it went up to $28, now it's back down to around $22.

The modern prices of reprinted cards have crashes, risen, and then fluctuated all over the place too.

I think a lot of people are drafting and selling so they can draft some more. Another group of people are speculating on what cards aren't going to be available wow even more are buying cards they want for their modern decks while they're cheap.

I was trying to buy Fulminator Mage. Watched him go from 8 bucks to 14 and back to 8 in five days time.

It's just a nut house where prices are concerned.

June 5, 2015 6:41 a.m.

One thing I have not seen mentioned and is basic to all economic. Supply and demand. As far as the current standard there is A LOT of supply. The sheer number of opened product has a great impact on pricing. How that translates into MTGO? I have no effing clue because I don't know jack about MTGO and have no intention of ever knowing jack about it.

June 5, 2015 7:56 a.m.

June 5, 2015 8:40 a.m.

So to answer the question, it's partially because of reprints (Tempest Remastered, Modern Masters), partially because Standard is close to rotating, and partially because there's an unlimited stock of cards on MTGO, unlike real life. Does that answer what you were asking?

JRaynor says... #50

Time to lay down some KNOWLEDGE!

FAMOUSWATERMELON, VampireArmy + anyone else who thinks this.

Okay guys. I been seeing a lot of "MTGO Cards are not real" and "there's an unlimited stock of cards on MTGO" in this thread. These statements are no true.

MTGO sells boosters, starters decks, and EDH decks. These items are ONLY available for sale during the same time frame that the sets are in standard, i.e. when they are being printed with an unlimited print run. Once the series has rotated there is no way to obtain a pack of said set unless you buy it from a 3rd party vendor which stockpiled those packs while it was available.

When you think of it this way, MTGO is actually an ingenious forward thinking virtual property platform from 10 years ago. Now it looks dated and ancient when compared to a lot of modern tech and software, but the theory behind its formation remains as one of the best examples of a successful and relatively stable Virtual Currency and Economy that I have ever seen.

I mean you read about this kind of stuff in "Snow Crash."

My point, is that far from being "Not real" or "Unlimited" in nature, Wizards has successfully created a parallel secondary market of virtual versions of their cards. The same rules of pack openings apply. There will only ever be X number of any given card.

Despite the similarities, one can note a few key elements in which MTGO departs from traditional magic financial theory.

First of all, MTGO cards are not subject to wear and tear. They do not get damaged. The only way to loose your cards would be for the entire MTGO server to permanently be destroyed and all backups lost at the same time. More unlikely than any number of things that could go wrong with your paper cards.

Next there's the fact that Buying and selling is infinitely Easier. We're talking point and click instant gratification. No mailing or grading or hassle involved at all. I could liquidate my entire collection in 20 minutes, with a little research.

The combination of these two departures from traditional MTG finance, changes some things. A lot of highly opened cards that aren't staples are SUPER DUPER CRAZY cheap. I mean let's be honest, You can say you made a 5$ deck or whatever but even if you build your deck out of the cheapest of cards you still have to pay shipping unless you have some MEGA store near you. On MTGO, you can literally build 40cent decks, because you start with all the land you need.

Expensive cards and Staples, on the other hand are STILL in high demand and still worth a lot of cash. Liliana of the Veil is over $100 bucks on MTGO right now.

Okay, I've rambled on long enough.

I've raised my own complaints about MTGO on numerous occasions but it's actually a really decent program. It's just 10 years behind in aesthetic and intuitive usage. Anyone used to using a GUI/Graphic User Interface is going to yell and scream when using a Command line. It doesn't mean that the Command line doesn't still provide superior productivity and usage in the right job. MTGO functions perfectly well for what it NEEDS to accomplish. I'm hoping we continue to see some improvements as time goes by. They've got something really special there, if they'd just bring it into the modern age.
