How Could MTGO Prices Be Going Down?!?!

Economics forum

Posted on June 5, 2015, 12:20 a.m. by BigFace

I've seen recently Standard and Modern cards dropping tremendously! Even the most recent block. I know meta changes reflect price change but this is across the board. No complaints from me.

Noble Hierarch 10 tix GoatBots. Used to be over 30 tix. Holy shit!Fulminator Mage 6.39 tix. Used to be like 35 tix if not mistaken.

You also don't technically own any of the cards you buy on mtgo. You're renting them so if mtgo goes away, tough luck

You don't technically own Pucapoints either, or your cable box, but I don't see that bothering anyone.

It bothers some people such as myself. I no longer use either of those things.

All I know is, as someone who has a huge collection and not much money to spend on making it bigger, I'm loving these crazy price fluctuations on MTGO lately. Just by watching staple prices closely and buying/selling them at the right time, I've been able to build decks for like 20% of what their actual price should be.

Did you guys know there was a day last month when Serum Visions inexplicably dropped to 2 tix a piece? Now you can sell them for 10. And that didn't happen only with cards that didn't get a MM2 reprint. The Scars of Mirrodin fastlands are about to hit 10 tix FOR NO REASON, and they cost like 1.2 tix in February. Nothing makes sense anymore, and I hope it stays this way for a while.

@Putrefy: Intentionally derailing a thread, especially one that just got back on track, is what you might call a bad move.

I'm watching this thread.

It is pretty crazy. Wasteland has increased in price dramatically since TPR has hit, which should be relatively counterintuitive. That's kind of an extreme example but it really goes to show what staples can do price wise

I dunno, I think mtgo's secondary market is insane. In theory the prices should be somewhat held back by competition but the trends sure don't reflect that a lot of the time.

VampireArmy That technicality is all but meaningless since wizards lets users buy and sell cards. The only time it would matter, was if MTGO stopped... at which point magic would be dead and you would have access to every card ever printed to play casually from 3rd party programs like cockatrice and such, and you really wouldn't need anything else because with Magic being dead there would be no competitive scene.

That's all pretty unlikely. My only advice is don't stress about the wording. Any/All online video game companies have similar fail safes because they HAVE to be able to ban users that are cheating/hacking without being sued for unlawfully seizing property.

I don't understand this... the guy comes on here, brings up a legitimately interesting point and is completely polite, community jumps on him (very rudely I might add), and then everyone starts telling him he's overreacting when he points out that he's being mistreated by other users. This being the internet should NEVER excuse people from being rude or disrespectful of others. If you wouldn't do it to the person face to face, don't do it on here either.

TBH, I totally understand where BigFace is coming from on his replies to those dumb posts, this community forum is weaksauce. Obviously the moderators decided to take the year off, or they're just as conceited and biased as the rest of the numbskulls that make up the core of this community. I'm not at all surprised that all my friends (who have used this website for years) don't bother with the forums.

ChiefBell I didn't say it was, but his original post was perfectly fine. If you want respectful posts, then be respectful and respectfully answer his questions. Again, in real life, if you are insulted or harassed, you have every right to stand up for yourself. I see nothing wrong with ANYTHING BigFace has said because I'm not stupid and I can see the context in which he is saying his words. I think that it's the responsibility of the moderators to do their jobs and put an end to bullying tactics and also hold users responsible for inconsiderate comments they make to others for no other reason than to basically make them feel inferior. I have no idea who the moderators are, but they're really bad if you ask me.

The moderators here are amazing. They deal with a lot of shit, keep everyone happy, and the site running. They put in a lot of work. Bigface got very rude and escalated the confrontation himself.

Fleetwood-Mat: Yeah Im just hearing a load of fart sounds at this point and contradictions within the space of two sentences. Because the thing is BigFace was the first person here to be openly and disrespectful and BigFace was the one to receive the ire. So yes, we do hold him responsible for his own fate.

Also protip: no one did ask you.

June 11, 2015 3:53 p.m.

So did anyone see what Liliana of the Veils price is at on MTGO now? Freaking insane!

It would be pretty awesome if they did 1-2 months of triple Innistrad draft on MTGO to help with that and Snapcaster Mage. And from what I understand that was a very beloved draft format, so total win-win.

Couldn't agree more.

As for the regulars who find things like this fun. We got it. We hear it every time a thread devolves into petty spats. Pop some popcorn and eat it quietly at your desk if you want to but otherwise shut up and move on.

Have any of you ever been the new person to a community and been pounced on by a bunch of regulars? Its no wonder to me he got defensive and overreacted. Sure, he didn't help his case much by feeding and responding to every little thing, but that's where I'm hoping regulars can step up and show him the ropes without adding to his frustration.

Oh, I also notice that BigFace's account seems to have gone dark this past week. Before this thread, seems like he was having a perfectly fine and friendly time on this site. Great job.

I find it sad that no one has answered the original question or topic yet, and it now seems like no one is going to get much out of this community... again. The forums are so ridiculously bull that this isn't at all informative. The guy wanted to know why MTGO prices went down across the board. I noticed this too, I came to the thread to find out more about this, I end up finding the guy who posted the thread getting treated like garbage without finding out the answer to what he wanted to know in the first place, which was something I wanted to know too.

On that note, I think the prices for MTGO cards go down in the summer season (when the game would see less activity). That's a theory based on last summer having very low prices as well.

Actually it was answered :

"PutridLeech says... #5

BigFace - No need to curse and act like a kid it only makes you look worse.

Obviously Standard and Modern Prices are going down both IRL and on Mtgo because of both Modern Masters being released, and the standard rotation coming in a few months that includes Theros block.

On this note, before things get out of hand, let's leave it to Epoch, yeago, or bell to deal with the rest of his problems.

Fleetwood-Mat If you have a formal complaint you'd like to give about the community, the current moderators are

ChiefBell / Epochalyptik : Forum moderators

yeaGO : site owner / Coding guy.

I'd recommend personally contacting one of them

June 12, 2015 12:03 a.m.

Fleetwood-Mat I didn't specifically answer his question but I certainly tried to discuss the topic on two seperate posts ;) MTGO has become my main source of getting my Magic fix so it, and the card prices, are something I pay attention as often as possible.

But yeah, the prices are weird. I had been paying attention to Legacy cards more than any other format but you can't not see the ups and downs from MM2015 hitting

Thank you Rasta_Viking29 for enlightening us with that very informative article.

For all the other MTGO players out there: Go shopping around for some of the cards you need in the game. There are some good deals like Kozilek and Ulamog for less than 2$ each, Remand for less than 1$ each, Iona and Elesh Norn also going cheap right now. Vendilion Clique (used to be 40$ in MTGO) now can be obtained for less than 20$. All the new Modern Masters stuff is pretty cheap. I made sure to stock up on some of the stuff I've been missing/wanting for a while now. I suggest you do too (if you play MTGO a lot).

I mean it does worry me. I have an account. I draft kinda occasionally but I never invested any real money into it

June 12, 2015 4:45 p.m.

Fleetwood-Mat before MM2 hit I traded my Remands to a bot for I think 3.~ tickets each, and just picked up a playset for less than 4 tickets. Made me happy.

I'm on my second MM2 draft on MTGO today. The first one I just flat did horribly but this one is starting in the right direction. I admittedly rare drafted some odds and ends, like a Surgical Extraction I was going to pick up anyways for a SB, but it's been fun so far
