i was about to trade my Thragtusk a couple days ago because my freind who has been playing longer than i have said that thraggy was around 40$ when it came out. If this is true why did the price drop from 40$ to 2.5$?

It was a beast in Standard. Not so much in Modern.

Thragtusk was all over the place and at his peek was around 25-30 dollars. However, he sees no play in modern and very very limited Legacy play so obviously he is gonna cost a lot less.

a guy really wanted them in that prerelease and he seemed like a cool guy so I traded 3 of them for a bolas and 4 promos (Xathrid gorgon). Boy did I feel like an idiot a week later.

Thragtusk peaked at $30 or so because it was in Standard during midrange/tempo's heyday. Back in ISD/RTR Standard, 3-color stompy midrange was the definitive archetype of the format because you had access to shocks, Farseek , and check lands, and there were lots of strong creatures like Thragtusk , Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip , Restoration Angel , etc.

Thragtusk is no longer Standard legal, and, to my knowledge, it sees no significant play in other formats. It's too slow.

It sees play in melira pod sometimes but not often and it's not particularly great there.

Thragtusk peaked at $40 where I am. Now down to about $4. Useless in any format apart from standard - but was amazing in that.

Doesn't Nic Fit use it in Legacy? Its a marginal usage, but foils should have a decent amount of value. And its the only reason the card isn't in the dollar bin

I've seen it run in death cloud decks as well.

Sigh... I miss my Bant midrange.

Restoration Angel + Thragtusk + Trostani, Selesnya's Voice = 15 life gained for 4 mana at instant speed.

Thraggles was amazing.

Once upon a time I ran ol' Thraggy in a bant Mimic deck for modern, used cards like Progenitor Mimic , Phyrexian Metamorph , and Clone to copy cards such as Thrag, Coiling Oracle , and Restoration Angel .

Good times were had...

Now, unfortunately, He only sees marginal play in EDH and casual.
