How will MTG: the movie affect prices

I just interested in people's thoughts on how card prices will change with respect to the release of the up and coming magic movie? Will the huge influx of new players make things go wonky?

Even in the event that the game becomes more popular as a result of the movie (I have my doubts), new player buy packs, intro decks, etc. They don't rush to SCG and buy singles for a game they don't understand. They probably won't learn about the singles market until two weeks in, if they last that long.

Another thing to consider is if they make promo cards. Are they going to be reprints of older cards (seems like a perfect time to reprint more powerful cards that they couldn't reprint normally), or will they be brand new cards exclusive to the movie release?

Reprinting powerful cards as promos is pointless if they're going for a mixed crowd. New or potentially new players aren't going to see the value in a promo of a Modern or Legacy staple.
If they were to release a promo to celebrate the movie, it would likely be an iconic creature or walker from the movie itself. Promo walkers might hold some value (depending on how good the walkers are), but a generic promo fatty will be shiny bulk material.

Just pointing this out; they may take after how the first YuGiOh movie did things and print ~2 really good cards and ~3 really bad cards that are all seen or referenced in the movie to hand out as promos.
Assuming that the protagonist of the movie is Gideon (for all intents and putposes), they might make a new gideon card that isn't jura or champion to hand out as prizes. This won't effect existing prices, and will in and of itself have a negligable price because anyone can go out and buy any amount of copies (by, say, going to the movie 4 times. I saw the Avengers twice in theaters, so I know that i'd be down to see this one four times if it's A: good and B: coming with a good promo).

Depends entirely on how the movie does and what lore it tries to cover. Urza's story, for instance, might be good, but I don't know how many people it will bring, since it's already done and buried and most of those cards wouldn't be easily accessible to most. Something a little more recent, like RTR, for instance (Not to say I want that as the movie storyline, just that it's an easily obtainable set), might do a little better in making more people play.
Having said that, I'd almost prefer if they just made an original story. The lore is pretty cool and all, but it might be better to start with something introductory to the universe first.
Not that I want it, but you'd think that with all of the planeswalking, they'd just make a miniseries or something out of it - You could do an anthology show like True Detective or Fargo or something and have each season be it's own story/plane (Urza, Ravnica, Zendikar, etc.)

From what I've heard, the movie will follow existing MtG lore. There's so much backstory to the game (much of it being quite interesting), it makes sense to use it rather than trying to write some random terrible fanservice.

Even from a marketing standpoint, it makes sense to use existing lore. Less cost (repurpose existing material), more gain.
The gain is basically two-part in nature. First, you strengthen a connection to existing players by taking what they already know and bringing it to life, so to speak. Second, you don't disillusion potential players. How much would it suck to be drawn into a new game because the movie interested you, then find that the movie was completely different? Say the movie took us to some plane the game hasn't encompassed, and it contains characters who don't exist yet in card-and-book canon. You'd be lost, and you'd probably feel disappointed.

I hope the movie follows Dack Fayden . he is my favorite walker from the lore, and the card is pretty insane, too. I can't wait until he gets a standard printing.

It'll cause the price to Plummet due to fact everyone will suddenly wake up and realize what they've been doing with their lives.

I think certain cards may go up in price, such as cards that are located on the movie box and what not. much like Juzam Djinn a card that has no impact other that in is a collectors item. I don't think the impact will be that drastic but I still think it is possible. Remember you are still dealing with a collectors market.

It may be a collectible game, but card values are determined primarily by their playability, which sets the primary demand. Ties to a movie aren't going to do much if anything, especially because it's unlikely that the promos would be good in terms of playability.

I think that's assuming the movie is actually good.
