Hype Season and Shenanigans

Economics forum

Let's face it, Economics are always weird around Pro Tour time. It's just after release and people are speculating, buyers are buying, hype is flying. It's a complete nightmare. This is even more true as it really looks like a growing number of people are looking to use the PT as a way to land more cash into their pockets. Examples?

Check that shit out. Azusa, Lost but Seeking is a fairly popular EDH card, but it's never really been more than just over $20. Check out that spike in price up to around $50 recently. What's hard to see from the screenshot is that it's since settled somewhere just over $35, but that's still $10-$15 over it's previous cost. I mean, I'm not complaining, I dumped my Azusas shortly thereafter, but holy shit.

Fluffy, your bunnypants are so awesome and fluffy and amazing, but what do you mean?

Check out Splinter Twin, the winner of the Pro Tour. That's a healthy spike in interest, not a "omfg, I'm going to buy out all the Azusa's an attempt to play on demand" spike.

Okay, okay, one example is sort of weak, how about a few more from successful decks at the PT to show you what a healthy spike looks like.

Tiago himself:

Hive Mind:

One more example? I remember reading somewhere on T/O a post about someone being really confused about the Leonin Shikari price spike. I did some digging around and came across a couple different posts saying that it was basically caused by buyouts of the relatively few of them that were up for sale. Yep, people bought out Leonin Shikari and price gouged, probably to attempt to pray on the growing popularity of Tiny Leaders. Check it out.

Yeah, that's a spike to roughly $12-$15 over it's original price before it settled back down just below $10. I actually lawled.

Maybe I should've made this a sticky or an article or something. I kind of got carried away.

ChiefBell or Epochalyptik?

Nice write up.

If you have reasonable capital, a way to move cards reliably, and understand a format there's decent money to be made day trading. Most people lack one of those 3 and end up screwing themselves.

We can't convert posts to articles. Or sticky things (there's no support for stickies yet).

@ Epochalyptik

Gross. Ah well, c'est la vie, maybe next time.

If you want to write an article, though, you can. Contact someone who has article privs.

@ Epochalyptik

I have article privs, it would just be a repost of this exact same thing at the moment... which seems needlessly redundant.

Actually, if you shit can it, I can just repost as an article. Derp derp derp.

Well, I'll leave it as a post.

Feel free to expand on it for the article, though. You'd need to do more analysis or attach a deeper explanation in order to make the content worthwhile in article form.

Good enough for me.

I try to stay well away from buying cards this time of year for this same reason.

I can't hide my smile from grabbing my Snapcaster playset and Liliana functional playset (3) just before they left standard. Long term investment, but I wasn't using the money.

I was planning on buying my snapcaster playset this month. As I gathered the funds it just keeps climbing. Ah well maybe some other day

fluffybunnypants, look at the spike on Wilt-Leaf Liege... Its horrendous.. Every store I frequent online is sold out the absolute second I get an in stock notification in my email.

Also, you can move those sliders down so you can see just the major price spike. :P

Yeah... in case you missed it.

The thing with this guy is that it was in a top performing deck that basically replaced one of the most popular decks in the format, Pod.... Wilted Abzan. I doubt it will retain this price tag. I'm basically assuming most of the Pod players out there basically went "oh shit, I can still play Modern," ran out and bought this as soon as they saw Jacob Wilson playing the deck. Eventually demand will probably fade for the card and it will start to drop in price. But it's a bomb against the standard Modern Abzan list, so, as a meta call, it's price will probably also highly depend on the success of Lili/Goyf Abzan as well.
