Hype Train: Thing in the Ice

For those who haven't seen it, the Thing in the Ice is pretty freakin' cool:

Front

Back

It's a wall that doesn't die to bolt' and can become a deal-with-or-die problem for your opponent. It doesn't bounce multiples, and can help reset Pia and Kiran Nalaar or more importantly, Snapcaster Mage. In conjunction with the fourth spell, it can also save your side from a board wipe.

So, let's talk price.

  • SCG: Sold out at $6 each, sold out at $8 each, $10 each, sold out at $12
  • TCG: Sold out without listing a price, $8 each, $10 each, $14 each
  • Ebay: $30-40 for a playset $40-50 for a playset

Is this thing going to be bonkers and go well into the double digits, or is going to be hyped and become a bulk rare? It's impossible to tell, but what do you think? Why?

Colour demands did nothing to limit the amount that Siege Rhino was played in both Standard and Modern. Remember that Thing in the Ice has deck construction limitations in that it goes in a specific deck ideal where as Siege Rhino just got jammed into anything running those colours, and made you want to run those colours.

Foils is where you want to be speculating. Those foils are going to be juicy.

Thats true its only 1u but its still only a rare and a creature without hexproof. Any top notch removal and its gone. Speed is the key here to play it properly in standard, U/R prowess decks.

Whoever is paying $95 for a foil copy of this card is going to feel super stupid when SOI's been out for a while and there's been 100,000 copies opened (you know, it being a rare and all). Granted, there won't be many foils opened, not as many as non-foils, but I can almost guarantee it won't hold almost a $100 price tag for a foil.
