I'm looking to invest money into Magic cards

Do I obtain play sets of shocks? Duals? Fetches? I have one dual, a few shocks and one fetch, but I don't know what to invest in

Personally shocks would be the best bet closer to rotation since they will come down a little bit when standard players start dumping them.

Depends on if you want to use your investments in matches or not, as well as your budget, and your format of choice.

If you play legacy regularly, or would like to, investing in duals isn't a bad idea. If you want to get deep into modern, buy up all the fetches you can. If you are just going to be playing standard / limited, i'd say go for any money card that you mentioned, and just sit on it.

Okay, so September or October I'm gonna be getting shocks and abrupt decays but what about right now?

A little late to be buying up fetches, so unless you want to play them I'd save the money for the future reprints. Duals again, too late to buy for quick profit, but they'll never be reprinted so they pretty much can only hold or gain value. I think shocks, especially foil shocks, are the best investment cards right now. I'm spending about $100/wk on foil shocks buying up any of them I can find at or around $30. But non-foil shocks are good investments too.

Lower cost specs right now would be Electrolyze , Spell Snare , Kataki, War's Wage , maybe Slaughter Pact , and on the higher end but still affordable Inkmoth Nexus and Arcbound Ravager . Modern PTQ season is approaching; these are all going to spike alongside all the stuff that already did.

I play commander and use the duals in that, I can't afford legacy at the moment, I am very into modern, but I run hatebears and there aren't modern legal fetches for gw

Legacy dual lands are probably the best thing to invest in. Modern is a safe investment but the ship has sailed on buying a lot of the cards cheap. Fetches > Dual Lands > Staples (Liliana of the Veil, Dark Confidant, Tarmogoyf, Snapcaster Mage, Path to Exile, Abrupt Decay, etc.)

Long term duals, shocks, sealed rtr boxes, short term would be modern staples, fetches last I checked were back under $70 for blue an under 40 for non blue. These could spike again when modern season starts.

Magiclover318 Just because there aren't GW fetches doesn't mean you don't use them. GW Hatebears plays Verdant Catacombs, Misty Rainforest and Marsh Flats. You just have to strategically fetch for land.

Hatebears actually stays away from fetches a lot due to Leonin Arbiter and Aven Mindcensor in maindeck. However, playing off-color fetches isn't bad.

Yeah, I might get the inkmouths and duals. It all depends on what my lgs has

Fetchlands are back down I can get tarns for 80

actiontech says... #13

That's fine, but they probably won't go much above $100 if they do at all. People that want/need them for decks may pay if they're going to the PTQs but many will just wait for the expected 2015 reprint of ZEN fetches. I just don't see much profit once you consider seller fees and shipping, etc.

Dalektable says... #14

actiontech ZEN fetches most likely will be reprinted in the near future, however they will not be in M15. Maro stated that shocks and fetches will never be in standard together, so that rules M15 out. My guess is we'll see them in Huey or else M16

actiontech says... #15

No no no, I didn't say M15 I said 2015 which would be M16 or whatever that fall set ends up being called.

DrFunk27 says... #16

Aaron Forsythe said Fetchlands will not be reprinted until after 2015.

May 8, 2014 6:32 p.m.

WovenNebula says... #17

Aaron Forsythe also said they weren't expecting them to spike so soon and that they were going to reprint them when they did. So they may not be in the next block once RTR rotates since they weren't prepared to do so or if they do it would it'd be like jamming them in as an emergency which I doubt but hope.

I don't feel like fetches are a valid investment given all this speculation. Duals are on the reserve list so none of this reprint nonsense will occur.

Magiclover318 says... #19

So duals would be good to get? What other legacy staples are there?

May 8, 2014 8:17 p.m.

Magiclover318 says... #20

I can obtain a Tropical Island from revised for $145, should I? For investment purposes only.

May 8, 2014 8:25 p.m.

mckin says... #21

Depends on condition, trops recently spiked but are still a lower priced dual, but good deals are always good, if you want playable duals get played an get multiples.

May 8, 2014 9:08 p.m.

Magiclover318 says... #22

Yeah I don't know the condition, it said nm, but it's on ebay.

May 8, 2014 9:12 p.m.

mckin says... #23

nm for $145 isnt bad, ive sold played for $150
