Investment Opportunity Routes.

So with a graduation party done and over with, I should have a solid chunk of change (probably about $150-$200) to invest in some cards, with "the bank's" approval. With now being a good time to start investing in stuff that'll rise in later years (coughcoughshocklandscough), I have several opportunities available to me. I could buy a couple boxes, probably either Return to Ravnica or Conspiracy, maybe open one and draft it with friends, keeping the other unopened. I could just buy singles of shocklands, Abrupt Decay , and Deathrite Shaman . And a friend is willing to sell me a foil Snapcaster Mage for $100.

So I have several different routes I could take.

  1. Buy singles of shocklands, Decays, and Deathrites.

  2. Buy a box (two if there are sufficient funds). If I buy 1, it'll most likely be Conspiracy and will remain unopened, and the rest of the money will be spent on singles. If I manage two, it would either be RTR and/or Conspiracy, and I may open the RTR box, leaving the Conspiracy unopened.

  3. Buy the foil Snappy, and spend the rest on singles.

  4. If enough funds, buy foil Snappy and buy Conspiracy box, not opening it.

  5. Blow it all on booster packs, probably BNG to find Brimaz, King of Oreskos . Just kidding!

So I have some options, and I'm not entirely sure what I'll choose. I have a hard time not opening boxes (the packs call to me...). The only singles way seems to be the way I'd make the most money and have the most amount of versatile cards to play with, and the Snappy would probably generate the most demand on the market. What do you smart people think?

I mean channel fireball is currently buying foil Snappy for $110 in store credit. And that's pretty low considering its value. You have a pretty good chance of making a good amount of money quickly if you can turn him.

As far as longer term investments, the shocks are an amazing investment right now. I'm currently buying up a bunch and hoarding them as a birthday present to myself. It might be less fun than buying a box, but you will see a significantly better return on your investment.

I don't think conspiracy is a great investment at the moment. Id wait on that for a while. I'd say get your 40 shocks while you can.

I don't think I'd be able to afford 40 shocks even with $200 though.

If ANYBODY is selling 40 shocks for $200 PLEASE hit me up. Haha

I was assuming you had some already, but basically buy as many as you can, even if you don't get your 40. im about 10 left that I need, so hopefully I can pick those up soon.

I do have some, but unfortunately not enough to have playsets if I spend $200. Oh well, maybe only half are heavily played in Modern. I think.

I would obviously try to complete as many play sets as you can, especially in colors you're apt to play. But beyond that, I would especially target Steam Vents , Hallowed Fountain and Sacred Foundry . Junk ones might be worth going after as well, but I think those 3 (especially Steam Vents ) will see the most play.

I'd honestly go with the shocks / singles approach. It just seems like a better investment, because the shocks will probably go up, as they stop being printed.

Buy as many playsets of shocks as you can. Buying a conspiracy box is also a good idea but as CommanderOfBolas pointed out that is a looooooooooooooooong term investment.

Buuut, if I buy the foil Snappy and immediately sell it, I could either get a playset of normal Snappies and a shockland or two OR about 14 shocks.

Or I could just sit on it and see if it rises some more.

Yeh but then you're looking for someone with like a spare $150..... Could take you a fair while to shift.

Well my best chance to get the most money out of it would probably be Ebay, and I'd probably put the minimum starting bid at $120 or maybe $130 and see where it goes.
