Hello, and I am considering playing MTGO. The initial price seems like a bit just to start. I was wondering if it is worth it to pay to play Magic Online. Also, is it possible to play without paying extra with ease? Thank You!
My advice is that you cannot maintain a physical collection and online collection without spending a lot of money mtgo is not self sustaining and you will have to buy like all cards you wanna play with. That being said if you want a competitive environment you are more likely to get it then something like xmage if you are playing for fun just use xmage.

As someone who just started Mtgo after 3 years of pure paper magic I can say do it. You can literally play magic whenever you want and most cards are vastly cheaper. I would recommend just trying it. I haven't quit paper magic but Mtgo has a nice supplement to the game. I may eventually completely switch to Mtgo just because I can't go to a shop as much as I'd like.
If I were you, try it. It's fun, cheaper than paper and has less bugs than people make it out to have.

As someone who plays Magic soley using MTGO I can say this: It's cheaper than paper and extremely convenient for wanting to sit down and play some Magic. Commander is typically fun since there is always variety and is especially cheap. For more competitive formats like Modern or Legacy, you're looking at a fraction of the price for a deck and daily tournements are a thing and rather popular.
For me this is perfectly acceptable because I don't have time, money or energy to go out and buy a paper collections, nor do I have people that I know who play Magic, or want to play the formats that I play.
That being said it does have some issues and can be irritating at times given certain elements of the community, but I consider it to be worth my time and effort.
If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

you can play mormir basic on mtgo which is rad, but your first few months will be frustrating, but you learn a bunch of oddities about layers and the stack, so that's something.

I love mtgo as it relieves me of rule enforcing in Ffa EDH/Commander games.

All I have to say is investing into an intangible collection, in my own opinion, is just silly. Not being guaranteed your return in investment is already an issue at times in MtG but MTGO is worse.
I mean suuuure, you have access to play whenever but all the human interaction that makes the game fun gets stripped. I prefer the social environment of Magic which is strange because I have very bad social anxiety attacks when around too many people.

Sadly the closest 2 shops in town to me consist of:
Shop 1- money grubbing scum bags who will rip you off just to make themselves more money. I understand it's a business but when you screw over loyal customers they leave. Their customer base is dwindling.
Shop 2- awesome owner but some people that go there are giant assholes. The social circle is that of high school cliques. Elitist keep to themselves and it's just an all around bad vibe unless you are part of the "circle" of regulars.
With this information, I'd hope you can understand why I'm drifting towards Mtgo lol.

I would also like to know. I'm considering moving online, but only running EDH in person?
