Is Smothering Tithe going to drop after rotation?

Just curious whether there's a Standard deck that uses this or if it's modern / EDH that's keeping it around $10.

Both - it is good in standard with other jank cards like Emergency Powers and it is incredibly good EDH staple for white. It is basically the white Rhystic Study .

But no Modern appeal?

If it's just EDH driving the price cards tend to drop, so I might wait to pick some up.

I think it's going to remain high for a long time, it's the kind of card that can go into every single white-containing EDH deck. These days I would say - more often than not - any card costed 10 dollars and up is exclusively because of EDH. Factoring in that it's a relatively new release that I don't think will be reprinted any time soon as well.

Eh, I know EDH is getting more popular, but it doesn't drive prices as strong as 4-of formats. Just the fact that each deck you make only needs 1 of each card is enough to seriously cut into the demand.

Most commander staples and money cards are also played in Modern or Legacy.

It's definitely going to drop at rotation. EDH is not enough to keep a card whose price is driven by EDH + Standard demand at the same level as it rotates. Demand will drop and supply will rise. Consider: right now, you have a bunch of standard players who are after four copies of the card. When it rotates, you need to replace each of those standard players with four EDH players in order to maintain the same demand. Additionally, you'll have a bunch of standard players who had the card bring their copies to the market. Imperial Seal and Gilded Drake are terrible comparisons. Both are from super old sets and Gilded Drake is a reserved list card that was bought out last year while Imperial Seal is only available from Portal Three Kingdoms (which is home to some of the rarest English language cards in the game) or as a judge promo. By contrast Smothering Tithe is from a very recent and widely opened set.

Could it come back up to the current price? Sure! But will it maintain that price as it rotates? I would be (very) shocked if it did.

Well, no one plays this (in a serious deck) in standard, so no.

I think you missed my point. All cards that see any standard play at all drop after rotation. My point was that not all money cards in EDH have any demand from any other format. So there is no need to muddy the waters by making an inaccurate statement.

The post-rotation drop is from decreased demand from, and a big sell off by standard players. Sustained demand from modern players didn't prevent shocks from having a post rotation drop when RTR rotated. If a card sees ANY serious standard play it WILL drop.

Me: "Most commander staples and money cards are also played in Modern or Legacy."

You: "My point was that not all money cards in EDH have any demand from any other format."

"Most"

"Not all"

I believe these words mean the same thing.

It looks like I'm not communicating effectively or people are deliberately strawmanning. Either way; goodbye thread.

NO it will not it is not played in standard at all.

Wouldn't be surprised if the price went up. The card reminds me of Anointed Procession (in that it is a card drawing demand from EDH as far as I can tell). Its price practically doubled since it rotated out back in October 2018.

Also, it doesn't necessarily follow that a single Standard player dumping his four copies needs to find four EDH players to keep up the same demand. Many EDH players run multiple decks, and often grab multiple copies of cards to have available for future or current projects. Smothering Tithe is just the sort of card that people will want to accumulate for that reason.

On the other hand, who knows?

It's not played in any format that causes price changes outside edh/commander. The only other place I've seen it is in casual decks, and they don't care about rotation. So only people who have it that will want to sell after rotation are the standard only people who get playsets of each set - and this is a very small segment of players.

@Boza I don't think its comparable to Rhystic Study in any fashion

June 21, 2019 3:02 p.m.

Boza says... #16

@Dylan - how so? It has a similar trigger, a similar mana cost and it is a taxing ability. People are much less likely to pay for it - it costs more to negate and the effect of getting a Treasure is much less than drawing a card. By the time your turn comes around, you are a minimum of three treasures ahead.

Now, of course, the power level is not the same, but white does not get these kinds of effects often, especially at this efficient rate. It is a staple in almost any white deck.
