JOU Fat Packs/Prerelease Kits

Hey guys! Recently, I was looking through my cards to notice that I didn't open as much Journey into Nyx as I thought I did, so I went to look on Amazon for any sealed product, and I found Fat Packs for $26, and prerelease kits for $15. Does this seem like a good investment? Can I expect a good amount of value from buying one? Thanks in advance!

I don't think it would be a very good investment at all. There are few cards that are playable in modern, EDH, and none for legacy and standard. Overall I think this set is dead. I can only think of using the Gods for generals but even then they are better bought as singles.

JOU fatpacks are worthless since the only rare worth more than $5 is Eidolon of the Great Revel (legacy playable funnily enough so there is one legacy playable card in the set). The only reason to get the prerelease kits would be for the 2 Theros packs since they still have a decent EV. But there is also a Born pack in there that has lower EV than JOU. $15 for 2 packs with decent EV and 4 packs with crap EV isn't wort it though. I mean I guess there could be a god pack still out there but that is the only way I see you making your money back on either of those purchases.

Journey is a terrible set for value, which is shown through the price of the products you're looking at. People are having trouble essentially giving away JOU product. There are only four cards around $10, and two of those are mythics.

Atony1400,
I like using MTGstocks when I look into the value of packs or boxes from a set. Here's their JOU page, which shows the average pack from that set to be worth $2.28.

Of course, there's a wide variation (who knows, you might crack an Ajani, Mentor of Heroes, Keranos, God of Storms or Athreos, God of Passage). But on average a prerelease kit (6 packs) is worth $13.68 and a Fat Pack (9 packs) is worth $20.52.

So, as others have said: No, that's not a great investment.

Did dawnglare miss one? http://mtg.dawnglare.com/?p=viz&s=JOU only has 7 cards over $5 and 6 of those are mythic.

Gidgetimer,
Yeah, they missed Godsend. Curious ...

Godsend is mythic and also shows up at $6 (it scrolls to the right in case you didn't know they list all the way down to $2)

Wow, thanks clayperce, Gidgetimer, ducttapedeckbox, and The_Dragonmaster. You just saved me from making a terrible buy. However, what set would be worth buying, preferably for EDH? I was thinking about buying a prerelease kit from RTR?

I have to go with New Phyrexia. Just because of the Praetors, Caged Sun, Karn Liberated, and Spellskite mainly to name a few. Of course this set is extremely pricey to invest in so you may want to look at some of the core sets instead. Shadows over Innistrad and Eldritch moon don't look so bad either. Just go to the pre release this weekend ;)

Here is Dawnglare's EV per pack list. They don't take into account foils because of how rarely you pull a foil of value (also it probably just makes the math much easier).
