Legacy entry

I have recently been wanting to get into legacy. A lot of my friends play modern and I have consistently heard "legacy is the best format" from numerous people. I want to try it and get into it.

Is it a safe entry point? For example, I own a lot of the jund/junk/staples + the blue staples( snaps etc), but I don't own any of the lands. I do want to play the format and get into it and I am not buying the cards as an "investment" but I also don't want to spend x amount of money to have them just lose value.

I do have some cards for trade that could help get me into the format. Thought I'd discuss it here. Also, is there a tapped out chat anywhere? IRC maybe? Sorry for my ignorance and thanks in advance.

ABUR lands like Underground Sea, Savannah, and cards like Force of Will won't go down. If I'm not mistaken they are on the reserved list

Force of Will and Wasteland are two of the big older staples that aren't on the reserved list, as well as Karakas. The thing is, these cards, even though they aren't on the reserved list, are very unlikely to be reprinted. And as for all of the legacy cards, they could be hitting a price bubble because the format is losing popularity, but at the same time, no more supply is being introduced into the market. It is generally considered a safe investment.

ABUR lands are, but not Force.

So the rule of thumb is what kind of deck you going for? A fair deck which uses Lion's Eye Diamond, a fair deck with Force of Will or a disruptive deck with Wasteland. Another thing to consider is where do you want to end up? LED means you can go storm, dredge, UR painter, etc, Force lets you go any blue deck, Wasteland lets you go for something like RUG Delver etc.

If you have Jund, it is a fairly easy port over to legacy. You need Deathrites, fetches, Hymns etc then get wastelands as the most important big card. Once you have that, get singles of the duals. The first one is the most important for stuff like turn 1 Deathrite etc. Then pick up the rest as time goes on.

I would stick with Force of Will, Wasteland, Dual lands and other higher-end cards like that to begin with. fetches are prone to reprints but great to have.

Thanks for all the posts!

See that's what I am saying/where I am scared.

"And as for all of the legacy cards, they could be hitting a price bubble because the format is losing popularity"

So when the heck does someone buckle down and just buy in? So painful. And is the format losing popularity? If that's the case.. why would I even want to buy in for such an expensive amount?

I have all fetches except misty rainforests at the moment. I have a lot of options as far as cards but my safest bet would be BUG.

But that still worries me that the format is "losing popularity"

Don't get me wrong, I'm actually attempting to buy into legacy right now. The format is by far the most fun format in magic, and in my opinion allows for the most fun and thought centered interactions. If the money means that much to you, it might not be that good of a decision, but if quality of games and competitive level play means more to you, then by all means, play legacy.

The format isn't dying, but it is struggling at times with duals etc

I hear you. I WANT to play legacy, yes. I just also don't want to "throw away" the money for just X months because the format is dying. That's all.

Legacy Jund is an easy port over, That's how I got into Legacy. I play Jund in Modern, so I only needed to get like 10 lands, and Deathrites/Bloodbraid Elf/Punishing Fire. Also the deck is just insanely fun, Deathrite into Thoughtseize and Hymn, into BBE for Liliana! XD If you want to know more about the deck before you buy into it, let me know!

Chief, yes! I'd love to see it. That's what I was thinking, maybe Jund or I believe "BUG" was more competitive? But please do show me the meta as I am not 100% familiar with it. How did you get your lands? I do have some cards for trade and I was going to start sending them via pucatrade but I am hesitant.

or do what I did, play Legacy Burn and do it for the cheap(ish), lol.

But really, investing in ABUR dual lands isn't ever going to be a bad thing. Their price might fluctuate here and there, but you won't see Underground Sea fall to like $20

Honestly, you can build reanimator with shocks and still do well.

Another option would be to build a manaless dredge deck.

It's probably the cheapest Legacy archetype out there, and you already said the thing you don't have yet is land.

It would let you get a feel for the legacy meta before spending lots and lots of money.

Also you should never need a second opinion on getting free cards. They're free. Enjoy your small miracle.

Wait what do you mean free bud? Its 3360 for the set of those cards.

4 underground seas,3 volcanic island,4 bayou,4 badlands, 3 tropical island, 4 tundra, 1 savannah, 2 plateau,2 taiga, 4 wastelands, 4 misty rainforests, 4 force of wills

For the price of 3360

You see... When you use the word "give," it implies that there's no money involved. You were looking for "sell."

When you quoted the price I thought you were just telling us the total value of what you were getting.
