I understand she's a great card but why is Linvala, Keeper of Silence so expensive?
I was wondering when yal would add such a forum. Are their any decks that actually use Linvala or is it just her combination of rarity and uniqueness?byu

I don't really know about sanctioned formats, but she's very powerful in EDH.

I use her in modern white decks, she's great for reasons already stated

@Epochalyptik I heard EDH was being made into a sanctioned format with tournaments. Is this true?

By sanctioned he means by Wizards for Official tournaments, just because a shop has Commander tournaments doesn't mean it's sanctioned.

@Zuckfat I use her in my bant deck and she is good (don't get me wrong) but not 30 dollars good.

Like I showed the owner of my LGS the Hero format that is on here, and he liked it so he said if we can get interest up he will start having Hero pods/tournaments. But obviously the Hero format isn't a sanctioned format. It was made by a user on here.

Sanctioned events are those officially supported by WOTC. Commander is not a sanctioned format. It's popular, and there are Commander tournaments and events, but that doesn't mean it's a sanctioned format.
WOTC knows Commander is a popular format, and they continue to develop products to support Commander, but I don't know of any plans for WOTC to sanction Commander. The primary reason they probably haven't is Commander was created by an independent group. Sanctioning Commander would mean taking the developmental power from that group because WOTC itself would need to oversee the format.

Linvala, Keeper of Silence , from what I've seen at least, is highly played in modern, specifically as a sideboard staple in Gifts and R/W/U.

So her price is probably not going to drop anytime soon...

I'd better get her now, in case her price rises again then!

@GoldGhost012: That's not a very good economical idea. The smart thing to do would have been to pick them up a year ago. Speculation is a fickle beast, and it requires a strong understanding of the secondary market and game economics as a whole.

Best time to buy anything modern is after the modern season. Which will be coming up soonish.

I would have picked her up a year ago, but I had no idea she existed back then. Not to mention I was just beginning to really understand the complexities of the game.

Hmmm.. interesting, well my lgs certainly treats it like a sanctioned event, you need a dci number and have to adhere to the ban list and banned players can't play in it etc.

@GoldGhost012 I don't want her to drop, I already have mine lol.

@fluffybunnypants no card gets the price tag Linvala has as just a staple sideboard card

@rache: You'd be surprised. Consider all the factors that have been mentioned so far:
- Sees sideboard play in Tier 1 Modern.
- Sees play in EDH.
- Is mythic rare.
- Is from a small, relatively unopened set that is out of print.
- Has a powerful ability with no equally-powerful substitutes.
- Has a decent frame for its mana cost.
A $30 price tag may be somewhat high, but I don't think it's unreasonable in this case.

Tack on gorgeous artwork and a creature type many Magic players collect as well and I guess I can see it but why does gifts run it?

It combats some of the most used graveyard hate in modern, shuts down Kiki-jiki, spliter twin, knight of the reliquary, griselbrand/goryo's vengeance deck as a whole, etc.

Plus, just getting just into the set it was printed in, it also shuts down Eldrazi Spawns, basically making them vanilla 0/1 tokens.

Linvala is an amazing card in a host of white sideboards, and particularly with Scavenging Ooze threatening to take a full part of the metagame, she is seeing some maindeck play too. I just transferred her out of my Melira Pod sideboard into the main, and I'm pretty convinced that's the right call at the moment. That only increases her value.
Her price has been slowly and steadily increasing for a while, but I have the feeling that this Grand Prix may show her to be good enough in the current metagame to boost the price some. I wouldn't expect her to drop as long as Modern is a format, and she may move up more quickly after Detroit if the cards fall right.

Moved to Economics (yeah, new forum).
Linvala, Keeper of Silence is a decent frame with a great ability. It shuts down so many key abilities, and there aren't many similar effects. Additionally, Linvala, Keeper of Silence is a mythic from an out-of-print set that was not heavily opened.
