Masterworks, invocations to collect?

I just noticed that the Ornithropter jumped from the $15.00 it was a couple months ago to Just under $100.00. I am KICKING myself for not getting those because I really REALLY wanted them for a deck idea I had, and just wanted them because I thought they looked neat.

Now I just traded a crap ton of stuff in my store to acquire the Wurmcoil Engine and the Wooded Bastion that it had to go with my Engineered Explosives masterwork which was the one and only special card I was ever able to pull from those packs.

So, is there any lower cost cards that you guys think might be good choices to pick up? Sol Ring is out of the question. If that ever increases in value it is gonna max around 400 tops. I can never imagine, even in 10 years that card being worth more than that.

Platinum Angel - not only is the art beyond gorgeous, but the card is great in commander and even modern, with the printing of Madcap Experiment.

Chalice of the Void has a chance of seeing even more play in modern, same with Cloudstone Curio. Rings of Brighthearth is almost never being reprinted, so it will go up constantly cause Commander. Same with Sculpting Steel.

All the swords of X and Y are critically underplayed in Modern and are 1 card away from being powerhouses (or even a certain unban of the Stoneforge variety).

In Canada these are even more expensive usually, a Sol Ring masterpiece is $600 cad or $456 US.

I use to own a Sword of Feast and Famine masterpiece but I sold it which I now regret. Another one would be $200 cad / $152 us:(

Would have been great if I now had held onto my former Chalice of the Void, Windswept Heath, Fetid Heath, and Prairie Stream lol.

I've been picking some up. Currently have Crucible, Scroll Rack, Rings, Paradox Engine, and Pact. Getting Staff soon.

The swords are pretty safe ones, Greaves and Vial, are other ones. My call for the best pickup is Paradox Engine though.

Yeah, well, it's what it is. I got an invocation pact as a present from someone who didn't know any better.

Take your pick really, as the entire “masterpiece” series has a ton of appeal for several reasons. First, they’re quite rare compared to the actual set print runs they appear in - I believe it was 1 in 144 packs for Kaladesh/Aether Revolt... not sure if that same ratio translated for Expeditions and Invocations, but they’re hard to come by none the less. Second, they’re almost entirely high demand and frequently played cards across multiple formats in many cases. This widens their appeal even more. Finally, they are foil with alternate art, which further appeals to the high-end players with money to burn, pushing prices further and ensuring they remain high. If the new WotC strategy of “mythic” set releases continues, forcing players to purchase these set offerings at a much higher retail price in order to have the opportunity to pull them from packs, that will likely continue to drive the masterpiece market at consistently high values moving forward. I can’t imagine the original expeditions and masterpieces doing anything but climbing or remaining consistent in value as a result.

I bought a playset of Masterpiece Lotus Petals for $100 because I needed them for a Pauper deck....they may possibly still rise in price.

Okay, Arvail I admit that when the store owner sold the playset to me he said "You're such an idiot." Btw all the basic lands in that deck are Alpha lol

I have the income for Alpha basics. I like to piss people off with 3ED lands instead. Mmmmmmm, white-bordered lands.

You know what they say - white border is the new black border.
