idk why, but specifically Master of the Pearl Trident and other merfolk cards have hiked up close to 4x what i bought them for a year ago. can anyone explain this?

If I had to guess I'd say it's because Thassa, God of the Sea and True-Name Nemesis being printed recently gave a lot of incentive to try brewing up different merfolk builds to see if it got a power boost.

Reel Fish won the VIntage Eternal Weekend Championship. Fish is also a popular Modern and Legacy deck, since it's relatively inexpensive to buy.
