Misprints, what to value them at?

A couple of weeks ago, a couple of my friends and i wanted to draft Theros (For the first time). We headed down to our local card shop and bought a fat pack so that the three of us could draft. I opened it up, because we were waiting on our third. I got to the lands and noticed something strange... about 20 lands (4 of each) were a little off beat. That's when i noticed that they were completely rectangular, their edges were pointed to a tip. i thought nothing of it, just that i could throw them at people and it would hurt more. Luckily, the store owner, a really nice guy, came over and told me they might be worth something. I told a different guy about them and he said he would buy them for $5 each. Is that a good deal, and can someone One-up that price?

Misprints are a really hard field to appraise. For something like this, you'll need to go with your own instincts.
Personally, I'd hold onto them for a while unless you need the $5 each.

Yeah i don't know what to do, i guess there's no harm if i hold onto them for a while, then again, $5 a pop adds up to $100.

A friend of mine has a Sneak Attack that was miscut and he values it as double the regular price. Is he right?

@mckin: A lot of people will, when you mention the word "misprint," think of slightly off-color or miscentered cards. Those are the valueless misprints.
The kinds of misprints that actually command value include
- Miscuts that show parts of two different cards.
- Crimped cards
- Actual miscolors (see: blue Hurricane )
- Fold-over cuts.
- Missing front/back prints.
@gale50000000: You could just take the $100. The effort required to appraise and move the lands yourself will probably not add up to that.
@LiquidKid: I'd need to see the card to tell you.

I've got a tetrathopter? Not Sure name (on phone) that's halfway misprint, its cool to look at when I get home I will post a picture.
It's an off center cut, both halves are the same print with the top and bottom in the middle.

MrKnify perhaps you mean Tetravus ?
Also would anyone know anything of the value of wrinkled cards? A friend of mine pulled a foil that looks like someone took a knife to it, but upon closer inspection, the surface of the card is raised in a line in some parts. I'll see if I can get a hold of it and scan it.

Aerokid, my friend pulled a foil card like that during the Dragon's Maze pre-release- a green-sh foil line right? I think they're not worth any more money than usual unless a collector values them more.

Most miscut/misprints are worth more on a matrix of the more messed up but still playable vs how popular/rare the card is.
for instance i have a japanese black bordered lightning bolt from 4th ed, the entire top bar is missing and it is double thick on the bottom, I had a retailer tell me it is worth 100.00 dollars, and then I have a forest that is half plains, and its only a few bucks.
simply put the more played the card is the more it's worth.

Personally I play plains and forests more often than lightning bolts. I don't know about you, but basic lands are more playable than a lightning bolt

@SpaderAce: There are tons of special lands, though. UNH, UGL, ZEN, GURU, promo (Plains), and tons of other special-edition basic lands are floating around. Lightning Bolt has only Judge and MPR promos in addition to its regular printings. Basics and Lightning Bolt both have Alpha/Beta printings as well.

Lol it was mostly a joke, he said the Lightning Bolt is more playable than a basic land

Rectangular miscuts, along with some other types of miscuts/misprints have value. I remember reading an article about it on SCG. (Google up MTG miscut/misprints or smth). Unless you can find the appropriate buyer, it's generally not much more than a regular card. I previously opened a miscut Steam Vents . The store owner wanted to do a 1-1 exchange which I declined. Later I found a buyer who purchased it at $20.

i think a lot of them are more personal value, with only certain misprints really being worth a lot more $$
personally i wouldnt care if the lands were miscut, ive got dozens of miscut cards, and wrong color cards, purple instead of blue kinda things, so id take the $5 each for the basics
but ive done very little research on these types of values
