Need help targeting Modern staples out of Theros Block

Hey all, got back in Magic at M15. Looking to create a modern/standard pool as sets progress. Wanted to get an idea of what you all thought were cards I should target in the Theros block as Modern staples? I'm trying not to get into Theros since it is rotating out soon unless it's Modern playable. Thanks for the help in advance.

The only cards that I see as modern playable from theros are Thoughtseize which sees large amounts of play in almost every black deck, Courser of Kruphix which sees fringe play in some, Jund and Abzan decks

Mana Confluence may see fringe play as well in Amulet Combo or Other Multi-Color Decks

Eidolon of the Great Revel is a modern and legacy staple in burn.

Swansong, Anger of the Gods, Courser, Eidolon of the Great Revel, Mana Confluence, Esper colored scry lands (Ad Nauseam), Rug colored scry lands (Scapeshift, though mostly 1 Temple of Mystery), Keranos, God of Storms, Brimaz (Though he mostly sees Legacy play)

Who plays SwanSong?

Swan Song sees some play in combo deck sideboards, although Dispel or Spell Pierce are still relevant. It'll probably stay at a dollar forever

Lots of decks will use it as combo protection in the sideboard

Combo decks such as Splinter Twin and Scapeshift will play Swan Song in the sideboard. But as for the op's question Brimaz, King of Oreskos, Keranos, God of Storms and Thoughtseize are the big names. Anger of the Gods, Eidolon of the Great Revel, and Swan Song are all safe pickups as well.

Thoughtseize, Courser of Kruphix, Eidolon of the Great Revel are the big ones. the other notables are Keranos, God of Storms and Brimaz, King of Oreskos. Mana Confluence will probably be worth a couple dollars as well, but nowhere near its current price tag

Thoughtseize, Courser of Kruphix and Eidolon of the Great Revel are the more important and pricy ones, but Brimaz, King of Oreskos, Stormbreath Dragon and Keranos, God of Storms see fringe play in modern and Anger of the Gods is great for sideboards.

I would watch the temples and the Gods for EDH cards as well. Mana Confluence is just a better City of Brass.

Springleaf Drum is already a staple in Affinity.

I'm also planning on holding onto a playset of Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx...

It's not seeing a lot of play, but has good potential to see an increase in play in the future (sideboard or fringe play). - They may see a significant drop at rotation, so it may be worth trading away for now, and picking them up again later... but I don't plan on going through the trouble.

A few other cards that may fit this description:
Master of Waves
Aegis of the Gods
Fleecemane Lion
Mistcutter Hydra
Searing Blood
Spirit of the Labyrinth
Sylvan Caryatid

That's largely opinion though, as some of those see no play currently... though some are currently seeing limited/fringe play.

Keranos, God of Storms sees major play in the side board of Twin decks, the card allows the decks to trance form into a much more controlling list and in the mirror over run the opponent with card advantage. It's a lot more important than lots of people think.

If you consider going back a set farther with Return to Ravnica the lands in there called shock lands because they deal 2 damage to you to allow them to come in untapped.Steam Vents

Breeding Pool

Watery Grave

Temple Garden

Stomping grounds

Hallowed Fountain

Sacred Foundry

they each sell for about 8-10 a peice but before they were reprinted were about 30+ so pick them up as soon as you can because they are staples in the modern format and must haves for any competitive deck.

It's unsure whether they'll ever return to that price. A LOT of RTR was opened, and therefore given the number in circulation they're just probably not going to be worth that much anymore.

I think shocklands will peak at $20, I don't think it will go any higher as ChiefBell said, as a lot of RTR was opened.

Wasn't this meant to be about Theros block???

I think one issue about buying "future staples" that people need to keep in mind is inflation. The issue is that the dollar is worth less and less these days, but the booster boxes stay the same at $100. On top of more people playing the game, more people can afford to buy more boxes, and as such, open more of the "money rares". On top of that, more of the boxes are being printed, regardless of how many people buy them.

I wouldn't mind trading for "future modern staples", but theres really no way i'd buy any of these cards now hoping to make a lot of money if they spike. Because they won't spike. Even thoughtseize and the more relevant fetch lands will probably stop at 30/35 dollars a few years after Theros and Khans rotate.

Foils might be different.

awesomeguy37: yeah, but theros didn't have a lot of value for modern or the eternal formats.

I know, but he asked for Theros, and I was a little confused why the conversation switched over to RTR.

Thoughtseize and Courser of Kruphix

I'd suggest picking up some foils as well. These can get some big inflation on them! Which is great for future trades

February 10, 2015 7:22 a.m.

The best way to make money (at least that I've seen) in newer sets is to pick up foil commons and uncommons that see widespread play. I picked up a foil Treasure Cruise for .50 when the set came out and guess what? lol. You really play the gamble doing that, since many of them won't be worth much but the few that do see play in Modern/Legacy jump by the %1000's of what you put into them.

Aside from that, to answer the original question- Thoughtseize, Anger of the Gods, white hate cards in general, Swan Song are good buys now. I'd hold off on getting Brimaz until rotation. Keranos is harder to tell if it will stay the same post-rotation or dip in price a little, so pick 1-2 up when you see the first good deal I guess.

I'm of the opinion that Courser of Kruphix in modern is a fad, much like how during the reign of MBD people were putting Pack Rat into every black deck they could find in modern, but most of those have died out. Invest in those at your own risk, but the best prices on them will be post-rotation.
