Pre-order fatpack or wait?

Really quick question. I have never bought miscellaneous MTG items and was wondering, is it better to pre-order a fatpack (BFZ), or will it be cheaper after it has been released. From other products, like console games, it seems to me that pre-ordering would be better.

they just recently answered a fan question that BFZ fat packs will have full art lands. if you like full art lands its completely worth.

PRE-ORDER NOW FOR THE FULL ART LANDS

All the store in my area risk of getting its supplies cut by the supplier, so everybody here are antsy about getting the fatpack. Those that got the channel, however, went all out and PO 2-3 boxes

definitely preorder, sealed product rarely goes lower for popular sets IMO and this will probably be the most opened fat pack of all time!

Im not gonna lie but that twitter feed did not really sell the fact that there was going to be full art lands as the land pack in the fat pack the way he worded it sounded like it could be that or just meaning the full art lands are in the packs. Honestly this wouldnt surprise me either way just something to think about. Zendikar also had fat packs with regular lands in it soooo...yeah idk

I preorder my fat packs at $27 ea. I had a thread somewhere where i tried to get other users to post cheap LGS' in their area, but no one participated :(

EmblemMan it's possible that they will only be in the basic land slot of the packs, but the way it was worded, to me at least, makes it seem like how original Zendikar was with the full arts instead of the regular basics for the land pack.

Zurnic the only thing about that that bothers me is that zendikar also had a series of fatpacks without full art lands in the basics pack

Rarely if ever pre-order something that's NOT going to have a limited print run. Fatpacks do not have an even slightly limited print run and will be printed a LOT particularly if people are buying them. Wait until after it's out and the price will decline to from $30-$20 depending on the time and the value of the set. No reason to pre-order, you local store will have them. If your local store runs out they will buy more since to reiterate these DO NOT HAVE A LIMITED PRINT RUN.

Kind of conflicted here, just because we all want full arts for every deck. A bit of math, these are including an 8% tax on the price:

3 Fat packs = $97.20

Box = $97.20/36 = $2.70 per pack

$2.70x27 = $72.90

$97.20-$72.90 = $24.30

$24.30/240 lands = $0.101 per land

At 10 cents per land, buying a fat pack is not too bad but with the amount that this set will be opened I think you might be better off waiting and just buying bulk. these lands are not going to be as rare as the last print and most of the money focus will be on foils.

Thoughts?

Well considering that Magic origins fat packs are still selling for $30+, I highly doubt you can expect Battle for Zendikar fat packs containing full art basic lands to sell for any less, let alone $20. The only way BFZ fat packs will start to lower in price is if they stop putting full arts basics in them like they did the original Zendikar set. I would pre-order now, before LGS's increase their prices to reflect the demand being created by full art basics. Their price won't drop immediately after being released like some people would lead you to believe, and as popular as they will be, I think your going to be hard pressed to find a shop that doesn't sell out of stock quickly. So the safest way to ensure that you get one (now that full arts are confirmed) is to pre-order it.

Aren't fatpacks also carried by big retailers though? You don't have to worry about the price creep if you got to walmart.

Big box retailers don't carry large supplies of these things. They buy a case at a time so rarely have popular items like this on the shelves for long. If your going to rely on getting it from one of those stores there is a bit of luck involved as you basically have to hope you get there before everyone else. Or know when they reorder supply so you can come back when they get more in.

It's the same way for the commander products. They stock such a limited supply that if you don't get the one or two copies available, you have to wait till they reorder more supply. In the case of Commander products this really sucks because they won't order more if their stock hasn't rotated. So if only the most popular deck is selling, they won't get more while the others are sitting on the shelf.

In other words, yes big box retailers sell them. Are they going to reliably be in stock and available? Almost definitively not!

@abenz419 My local Target usually has about 30 Fatpacks in stock at any given moment, so I'm not sure if I agree on that count.

But all in all I feel like people are forgetting that we are talking about FAT PACKS here. Not From the Vault, Not Modern Masters, not even Commander decks. These will have for all intents and purposes an infinite supply, a store may temporarily run out, but not indefinitely. I would recommend waiting until the set has a month or two behind it and see what the trends are, maybe the fatpacks will be cheaper, maybe it will be cheaper just to straight up buy the lands. There is no harm in waiting to see.

Walmart, target, and the two local LGS' sell their fat packs at $40 and $120 for a box regardless of set (not counting modern masters) and/or content. So the one shop i order from is the cheapest, but only if o pre-order it. Knowing that i am saving $13 a fat pack & $30 - 40 a box compared to other stores is worth pre-ordering

@Harashiohorn, All that was confirmed is that the land packs will contain full art basics. There is still the chance that they do it like they did last time, then, not getting one of the initial printings will result in getting a fat pack that does not contain full art basics. If the whole intent of picking up the fat pack is for the guaranteed full art lands, then waiting would only increase your chances of the initial stock being bought out before you pick one up.

And that is fortunate for you about your local Target. Here, Target, Wal-mart, Toys-r-us, Barnes and Nobles, etc., all only stock an area about the size of the display at the ends of the aisles. This small area contains all their TCG supplies including MTG, Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh, and sports cards. So like I said, for any popular items, they're always out of stock because they have a limited amount of space for supply and it's such a bargain compared to the LGS's that they're picked up as soon as someone sees them. Also, these stores do not sell booster boxes either. At least I've never seen a single one there (new set or older). The only booster packs they sell are the ones that come in the cardboard blister pack.
