Preordering Single Cards

So there are a just a few cards that I really want from Shadows Over Innistrad, sadly it seems a few are rather expensive. The main cards I'm looking at are Arlinn Kord and The Gitrog Monster. I'm looking for the cheapest way to get them. So should I wait till after release where they might go down or preorder them before they spike? Some advice would be helpful, thanks!

The gitrog monster will not see play in constructed formats outside of fun decks so I would wait for that to drop and it will. Arlinn I would also say wait for it to drop. It will not be the most heavily played planeswalker in standard and it has limited uses in modern but it is a very fun casual card so I could see it settling at 20 about a month after release.

Everything will drop hard except those highly playable in standard. Just need a little patience.

Preordering is rarely a good idea, and only if you think a card is going to go up a lot after release. Most cards will fall dramatically after release, ESPECIALLY planeswalkers, as they are usually subject to a lot of hype.

Buying cards like Westvale Abbey, Traverse, and Deathcap Cultivator before release isn't a terrible decision. They don't have far to fall if they don't end up seeing play and if they do make the cut they could double in price shortly after release. The mythics above $10 and rares above $5 are better to wait on typically. Only multi-deck staples command high price tags for extended periods of time.
