Pricing a collection

I have a friend who used to play magic a little but he hasn't played in 3-4 years, and I want to make an offer on his collection. The problem is that I don't have any idea how to come up with a fair price to offer. I also don't know what all the cards he has are. I looked through little bit about a year or so ago and I know he has a Verdant Catacombs and two Stoneforge Mystics as his pricey cards. He also has bought the ajani vrs nicol bolas duel deck and the premium fire and lightning duel deck(i believe that's what it is called). Other than that I don't believe he has a whole lot but I'm not for certain. If anyone has any suggestions on how to proceed or what to offer it would be greatly appreciated.

You should probably start by getting the value of each card. Then you can add it all up.

I typically estimate value by buylisting all of the cards worth $3+ and bulking the rest. You kinda need to know what's in the collection ahead of time in order to do that, though.

It's a time consuming process.

Start with asking him what he wants for it. If he asks for a hundred bucks, that could avoid a ton of time sorting. If it turns out he has a bunch of stuff that you did not expect, you could always hit him up with a little extra cash or something.

If he asks for 500 bucks, then it is time to go through the cards, pull that ones of value, and proceed with the work. Then I would just value the collection on the value cards. Not sure if this is how others would do it, but that is just how I would go about this.

I would separate all into $2+ and under $2....buylist price on greater than 2 + .15cents on rares under (usually averages out when you account for bulk at .10).

then all commons/uncommons $3-4 per 1000...assuming their arent any value ones like remand / serum visions etc...

what they said. ask if he's willing to sell the whole lot at an agreeable price. if he goes over the budget you have in your head THEN it's time to manually sort through the actual valuable cards

on a personal note,I would just take note of the valuable cards I can actually use and bulk the others. if he disagrees with your pricing then tell him you're taking the lot and leaving those cards with him

Thanks for all the responses. I appreciate the ideas and will probably do just what you guys suggested.
