Question on recent price increase for many cards

I recently wanted to buy a Bitterblossom but realised that the price shot up from $30 to $70. I saw that for many other cards the same thing had happened. However, the situation with Bitterblossom is understandable; moving from illegal to legal in modern.

Why is it that around the time of the set Born of the Gods released, was there a price increase for many cards? (I saw this common occurrence on the graphs in this site)

Around the time of a new banning season a lot of price fluctuations occur as people anticipate new bans and unbans and also start stocking up on cards for new decks.

It may also be to do with the approaching Modern season. That causes cards played heavily in Modern to go up in price.

Speculation mostly. People thinking BNG will change existing decks, create news and change demand for cards, based on the new set. Modern's ban changes also makes for a major shift in the meta game, so cards are being speculated on with those changes in mind also.
