Rares binder, how to?

so every time i go to FNM im approached be several people to see my Rares binder. until today, i didnt have one but in setting out to make one, im a little confused as to what i should do.

Do all gold/red cards go into the RB? or just cards of value? right now i do have a small box of cards $5+ just because.

now heres the other question: i really dont know of any cards i want to trade for, but when im asked for my RB, they usually find something and give me theirs asking me to find something i want to trade for. i dont have anything i want, because i normally just get what i need offline. so my question here is a little unrelated: when trading, do you trade based on pricing or card? when i was in this in high school, we just traded based on card strength or need, we didnt have price/value guides (hell back then we didnt even have set symbols...)

anyway, im going to start going going thru my cards, if yall all have some advice on what should go into the Rare binders it help a lot!

I have a binder for "Cards worth more than 5 dollars" and one for "Cards worth between 2 and 5 dollars"

Anything less than that is just in a big box that I mostly don't bring to places.

For me personally my trade binder I bring with me has rares and mythics I have no plans on using at all. Usually consists of 2-4 dollar rares or mythics. Sometimes I bring my money rares if I know someone has stuff I'm looking for and I know I think I can use to trade for said stuff.

what about foils, even if its not a rare do you do foils (some PPL at FNM have a thing for foils)

In my opinion you should have a dedicated trade binder if you're interested in trading, and shouldn't just carry around all your rares with you - especially things you don't want to part with.

I keep a mix of stuff in my trade binder, lots of rares and mythics I either don't need or have more than a playset of, but also include a lot of uncommons and non basic lands that people often ask about, or I know the LGS sells out of a lot. Mostly standard, but also modern and EDH suitable cards. Having less valuable cards also helps to make up trades that are a little uneven. The Zendikar full art lands are great for making up dollar differences. I always go by value, and tend to go by SCG prices.

Almost always trade based on pricing. Price is a very good relative indication of the strength of a card, as well as its relative rarity. Of course, by "relative rarity" I mean how difficult-to-find and how sought-after a card is: the old shocklands are harder to find than the new shocklands, and naturally remain more expensive.

REV666, you should be careful trading away your cards, a lot of old cards are really, REALLY valuable nowadays. Make sure you look up all your cards and their prices, particularly lands and spells (creatures, not so much).

Yeah, if you don't know the money value of your cards people will swarm around you like a pack of hungry vultures. Unfortunately there are some very dishonest people out there who will try and rip you off.

I miss the days where I would trade cards based on want, not price D: Ah, the days when I played Yu-gi-oh...

Anyway, I have all of my rares in a binder because there's always someone looking for something, and there are a lot of kids at my LGS who are just starting, and they love the cards that everyone overlooks. I usually just give them the rare if it's under $3, because I really would hate for said kid to hate the game because he can't/his parents can't afford it.

That being said, you can always have seperate binders for what you've got. Some people at my LGS have a binder for foils, a binder for eternal formats, and a Standard binder. Some even just have a binder full of money rares. (Some guy there has a page, front and back, for each Standard staple, filled up, too. I'm talking Revelation, Domri Rade, Jace AoT, Voice, etc). There's plenty of ways to go about it.

I have a binder with all my rares, mythics, and valuable uncommons that is my trade fodder, then I have a little black binder full of 15$+ cards that I only break out when im trying to trade for something of high desire. Kind of my private stash. And generally my trades are made based around price.

My personal RB, has promos, then Mythics (regardless of set) then I go by color order. WUBRG. Then foil Rares, then Money Uncommons (regardless of set), then land, then tokens/emblems and finally alters. Then I carry around all of my foil uncommons/commons in a deckbox.

I seperate by color, then lands like foil land or zendikar, and then mythics in the back. The back of my binder is all my valuable cards that arent for trade so there is a divider that says NOT 4 TRADE but people still look and want things anyways! lol they will never get my lands!

I have mine separated by card type, with Lands up front and Tokens in back. For a while I had all my uncommons in there too, but my collection is growing too large for that now. I'm starting to remove all the non-money uncommons but I'm keeping all the rares and mythics. Foils I keep in the binder as well, it's a nice touch to look through a binder and find foil cards.

I start mythics in front, rares next and uncommons last and then divide them by color

so far i have it separated by color (foil rare/mythics mixed in with the color), then things like artifacts, non basic lands, dual cards (popular here), rando foils and then basic land foils. as time goes on im sure i can thin the heard out some more

I have four binders, one for Legacy, Modern, and Standard. The fourth binder is my not-really-for-trade-but-if-you-have-something-I-really-want-you-can-take-a-look binder. They're then separated by color. I will bring each binder depending on what event I'm going to. FNMs are all Standard players, so I'll only take my Standard binder, for example.

I keep playable commons and uncommons in my binders. There will be stuff ranging from Ethereal Armor or Dryad Militant , all the way up to things like Tarmogoyf and Wasteland . You'd be surprised at the number of people who look for commons and uncommons willing to trade away cards you might need. Just this last week, a guy was in my LGS looking for cards to make a new EDH deck. I ended up trading him about a dozen commons and uncommons plus a Chromatic Lantern for an Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite . The trade was even, but wouldn't have been possible if all he was looking for was rares.
