Regrettable/Memorable Trades

Economics forum

Looking back on some of the older cards I have (and had), I realized that I made some pretty poor trades and made some rather favorable ones. Whether it was selling a Tarmogoyf for $90 when I thought it couldn't go higher to trading a Ral Zarek for two promo Wurmcoil Engine s and having the former drop to half its value and the latter double in price, there wasn't much I could do to predict these changes.

Has anyone else experienced this? That is, trading for/away a card and then having its value skyrocket or tank.

On a side note, I apologize Epoch if you deem it necessary to move this thread.

I think this is fine in Economics. It will inevitably involve value.

I once turned an Elvish Champion into a FBB Italian Volcanic Island .

Aha score, I think that T/O drinking game needs to have a "drink every time you correctly post a thread."

Anyways, that's a crazy trade up. I was hoping to do something like that with the P2P I mentioned to you a while ago, but sadly the Magic community where I attend school is rather small and there isn't a shop nearby...

I once traded away a Dark Confidant when it was around $50 for a Marsh Flats and some less notable odds and ends. The following day Dark Confidant shot up to $75. But I really needed that marsh flats. Lol

I traded a Liliana of the Veil for 4 Thragtusk , 1 of them was German. That wasn't so good...

I played Magic in elementary school, and right after I started up again in college I traded a Rishadan Port away for basically nothing, didn't find out what it was worth for several months. I traded a Jace, the Mind Sculptor for three Baneslayer Angel s. And possibly the worst was trading a Polluted Delta for about $17 worth of blue/black then-standard lands (I think some combination of Drowned Catacomb and Creeping Tar Pit s. It was worth $25 at the time and I didn't know any legacy players. Now I'm trying to scrape together $80 worth of trade so I can pick one up again for my cube X.X.

I traded 4x Drowned Catacomb for 4x Boros Reckoner ... then the reckoner got broken in aristocrats. Score

I traded 2x Dark Confidant s (back in 06) for a Verdant Force . I am still mad about that.

My best trade was trading a Voice of Resurgence for shocklands when it was ~$70, My worst trade was trading away those shocks (value wise, had to complete edh decks).

Oh yeah, and buying a Karn Liberated when he was fifteen dollars was pretty good.

Best trade: Tibalt for Mutavault. (This was like, the day after M14 came out)

Bad Trade: That same mutavault (as well as 3 others) for 4 sacred foundry and an elspeth. I'm quite sad that I don't have them now.

Worst trade: Elspeth Tirel + Ajani, Caller of the Pride + Gideon Jura for a mono green wurms deck made from shitrares.dec (Things like Elderscale Wurm , Gravetiller Wurm , Pelakka Wurm . This was back when I had just started, and I didn't realize that planeswalkers were awesome, let alone that cardboard crack could be worth money.

Almost traded my Gideon Jura for a Jace the mindsculptor the night ROE was released. They were listed at the same price at the time. Unfortunately the guy changed his mind. I ended up getting 2 Misty Rainforest and some other stuff for him.

My worst trade, not money wise. I traded a foil Radiant, Archangel for 2 Marsh Flats The guy was obsessed with angels, and I gave him a hell of a deal at the time. The 2 Marsh Flats were worth about half the angel at the time. I really miss that angel.

Something I deeply regret now that I look back was trading away the first card I pulled from my Innistard booster box...a Foiled Snapcaster Mage granted I got quite a bit of it and the value has stayed pretty steady over all....but still :/

Sold 2 BoP for $35 each was nice since nowadays theyre useless

I think I sold my bloodstained mires when they were $5 on ebay and UGS at $30each

Best trade was probably trading spare shocks into a 2nd JTMS, and then un/commons for hoof at $5 in a stores case(policy was if the price in case wasnt updated you get the case price)

February 3, 2014 8:54 a.m.

1 for 1 stormbreath for snapcasters was also pretty good

During the BNG pre-release I traded a Flame-Wreathed Phoenix for a Brimaz, King of Oreskos . Given it was definitely in my favor, but he offered it to me, So I was more than happy to trade.

My thoughts on this matter is that you should always check prices before trading to avoid being ripped off and you have a responsibility to ensure your fellow trader is equally informed. Otherwise you are essentially stealing, and I honestly believe you should lose your right hand. :P

From my own experience's I traded away my Deathrite Shaman to a mate for a pile of crap which I felt would be good in a deck, since then I have removed it. I traded away two Domri Rade 's for DRS's of equal value, went home and sold them on ebay and got only 5 quid a piece. (1/3rd of their market value at the time) That was irritating.

February 3, 2014 10:31 a.m.

@ Schuesseled -- I intended for this forum to serve as a place for people to share instances where they made a fair trade and at a later date turned favorable/unfavorable. Hopefully I didn't misunderstand your post. Also, good thing I'm left handed! Just kidding... Well, I really am left handed, I'm joking about the stealing part.

My worst trade was trading a Karn Liberated for a Thrun, the Last Troll back when they were $25 and $2 respectively. .-.

HOWEVER, just recently I traded back for the very same Karn Liberated for about $27 of Standard cards. Even though I'm against ripping people off, the kid took advantage of the fact that I didn't know I could look values up online at the time he traded me Thrun for Karn. That trade happened back when I first started playing Magic and I had bought a Karn for $15 a few weeks before.

most of the posts on here are about people being ripped off ducttapedeckbox. It's entirely possible that you'll trade a card for equal value then have the market swing and screw you over. But such things are hard, if not impossible to predict. So I tend not to get sore on that subject, for instance I traded a mutavault away for a 15 dollar rare recently, and sold a lowryn one years ago for ago under 20 dollars. Right now they would both be worth way more, but I'm not gonna let that bother me, it was the right decision at the time.

I traded 2 Sliver Queen s and a Volrath's Stronghold for an entire EDH deck, KMC sleeve, and a satin deck box.

February 3, 2014 10:22 p.m.

miracleHat says... #29

@The_Wizard, was the EDH deck good?

February 3, 2014 10:26 p.m.

It was and still is. It's my Sygg, River Cutthroat deck. It's a budget deck, costing me just over 100 dollars in trade value.

Sold all my cards 10 years ago when I needed money for bills. Mostly unlimited, beta and revised about 700 cards including a play deck with 12 dual lands.

Value of the play deck today almost 2K nevermind the rest of the cards in the collection. I almost had a heart attack at the LCS when I went in to buy new cards and start playing again last month.

Oh, I also pulled an Ephara at the BNG pre-release and traded it for someone's Phenax. They're about the same price right now but I still see it as in my favor since I wanted him lol.

I always check values for both sides before trading. I consider ripping someone off stealing. I do not want to steal from someone, and I do not want to be stolen from.

The way I see it, if someone offers a trade, I will accept or decline assuming that the other person knows what they're doing, unless they're a complete noob and have no clue at all. However, I will never flat out lie to someone's face. I was actually appalled to hear that, at my local shop, someone told a noob that a Liliana of the Veil was worth about 5 pounds and traded for it at that value. He lied to the kid's face and basically stole from him. I don't like the guy who did that.

Anyway, I definitely know my worst trade. I traded a Master of Waves and 1 pound for 2 Dragonskull Summit . A day or two after I did that, Master shot from $5 to $17. My best trade was completely accidental. I traded away my Ephara, God of the Polis , Prophet of Kruphix and some $1.50 rare for a foil Spirit of the Labyrinth , assuming it was double it's normal price as cards normally are. Turns out the foil Spirit is worth over $20.

Didgeridooda- I totally agree. In my LGS there have been 3 players who have been banned due to ripping off noobs (there are many). I don't understand how people can be so obnoxious :/
