Rotation dump

I typically play standard and try as much as I can to use existing cards to fund new decks usually through trade. (when I get bored of one of the ones I run) Lately I have seen lots of "rotation" talk on this site. While I'll gladly play my favorites for 6 more months without worrying about it, it got me thinking about when in the cycle I should start "dumping" cards so I don't get stuck with them losing significant value and trade to either start some new decks or just gather cards that will be around for longer.

Sure some cards will transition to other formats but without playing those formats I fear these cards will be thrust into my massive bin of cards and not support my future standard play.

So when do I dump the demon? (Desecration that is)

july-August. AFter coreset release, I tend to like to dump late july-august to retain max val.

Yeah generally after the coreset rotates is when most people will realize the next rotation is coming, in this case RTR Block.

August is when I start looking toward selling/trading stuff. I tend to get the best value of cards around then. Sometimes I will do it a little earlier. Just depends on what I have that needs to be sold or traded.

Wow, you guys are loosing a lot of value waiting until July-August. For example, look at something like Huntmaster of the Fells (the paper graph is smoother to read), a good sample since it was a defining Standard card but not transitioning to other formats. Cards peak around the 2nd set in the block before rotation before going on a gradual decline. By July or August they've all but bottomed out in price already.

You should be looking to dump your cards right around now to get the best returns on them.

@Magiclover318: Your post is misleading. Nothing rotates when the next core set is released. Rotation only happens once per year: with the release of the first set of the new block.

Well what I meant was m14 is no longer usable in standard when m15 comes out.

Again, that is incorrect. M14 is Standard legal until rotation, which is the only time (besides bans) that cards become illegal in Standard.

Also, Slycne makes a stronger point. I didn't actually address the thread's question in my first post. You want to get rid of cards at peak value. Most of the currently-valuable cards are already at peak value; it's unlikely that they'll spike with M15's release. If you wait until M15, then you'll be competing with the rotation mindset and with all the other sellers/traders looking to dump their stock. If you can afford to trade/sell now, do it.

Oh sorry Epoch. haha I guess I don't pay attention to the core sets much.

While what has been said is true you if just factor in selling/trading value there are other things to consider. If you are winning store credit or prizes with the cards you can pretty much negate your loses by holding on to them longer and playing a competitive deck. Winning $50 store credit pays for your playset of Desecration Demon .

I feel the ship has sailed on the demon already. He has halved already. I would play him. Seems MBD is on the slide. It may pick up though.

Desecration Demon might still be at "peak" value, but having tried to sell some on eBay i can tell you they are already falling, people aren't willing to pay top dollar for them. Trade maybe, but they'll always be looking for that bit extra.
