Sarkhan Unbroken?

Hey all,

I currently play Temur with 4x Stormbreath Dragon, so needless to say, I pooped myself when I saw the new Sarkhan.

What do you guys think about his value? Should I buy him now (SCG is pre-ordering at $29.99), or wait until the hype-train has chugged off into the distance? The problem is, he seems really good, and I don't want to wait only to see him go up in price.

How do you think his price will fluctuate? Is it even really possible to make a good prediction at this point?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I think I'd wait, planeswalkers rarely stay that high.

That's my instinct. I mean, Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker opened up at around $40 before dropping to less than $15. But this Sarkhan is much better than that one -- plus, Ugin, the Spirit Dragon has remained fairly high, but I'm not sure if Ugin is comparable to the new Sarkhan.

I guess the main thing to do is wait for the prerelease, seeing that I pulled a Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker at the KTK prerelease and an alternate-art Ugin at the FRF one xP

I currently think this guy is wayyy overhyped. He's like Ajani, Mentor of Heroes; it's not that he's bad, he just won't see play.

Unless Temur Midrange becomes a thing, which is possible (but I don't really see atm) he won't be played. He only works in Temur Midrange. And, let's be real, 5C Dragons won't be a competitive deck. He'll hold some value for EDH players, but I don't see him getting much play.

I'd hold off, try and maybe trade at release time or something. Don't pay $30 for this guy unless it's clear he's a big Standard player after multiple events.

Well shit bruh 3rd times the charm lol and while it's true that Ugin isn't going down, he's played a lot in modern Tron decks. Because Sarkhan is 3 color, it's harder to jam him into any old deck, and I have a feeling he won't get played much in modern.

Thanks for the advice so far guys, you're both probably right. DTK will make Temur better now that it has a solid answer for Rhino/Tasigur plus a few cool dragons and the new Sarkhan, but it needs a LOT more from DTK to become a Tier 1 deck. So even if he ends up being good, he might not remain expensive because he's only good in a fringy strategy.

ThisIsBullshit I wouldn't say a lot

I'd say Sarkhan is going to go down. I usually say that about planeswalkers though, and I am sometimes wrong. Sarkhan is very needy, mana wise and while he is good, I am almost certain he won't see any eternal play due to the temur mana requirement. I would wait.

He will drop in price for sure, temur got better but not the best. He isn't comparable to Ajani, Mentor of Heroes either because I think he is better. Only reason he might not be is because of the third mana symbol which honestly is not too big a deal. Token first time he comes down then draw and more mana everyturn after, pretty good.

I think he will be around 20$. He is a really awesome card. I think, that many people want to play him, just because he is cool. He really makes Temur good I think!

Ugin has a lot of casual appeal, especially since he was one of the ones to seal away the Eldrazi. He's expensive because you throw him in any EDH deck.

New Sarkhan is Temur colours, so you can't force him into anything.

He's only going to see play in 1 standard deck, so I'd guess he would drop. Narset, on the other hand, can be played in a lot more, so she will stay more expensive.

His +1 isn't bad, nor is making 4/4 dragons. However, Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker and Stormbreath Dragon are probably just better because they have haste. Xenagos, the Reveler comes down a turn sooner and actually gets more damage in (2, then 4, then 6...for a total of 12 by the time Sarkhan Unbroken's dragon can actually attack).

No doubt Sarkhan Unbroken will see some play, but $30 is a lot. Even $10 is a lot for what this guy does. He's not playable outside of Standard, either.

JohnnyBaggins says... #13

He'll see play, but only in niche decks. While every deck that could run Ugin, saying: every deck that legitimately supported an 8-drop, played Ugin, Sarkhans mana really narrows down which decks can run him, and there's not that many. I do not doubt that due to the great spoilers of RG, Temur with Blue as Splash will be played a lot more than it is, but still not big time. I do completely doubt that Sarkhan will stay anywhere near 30 bucks. 15, maybe. 20, possibly. 30, no way.

@Luutamo: What's MCM?

Everyone else: Thanks for the input.

MCM = Magiccardmarket.eu.

A site for us Europeans, where we can buy and sell cards :)

March 7, 2015 10:45 a.m.

Hm, looks like they do have a very good price for him.

I'm in the U.S., though, so I'm not sure if I'd have to pay more for shipping it across the Atlantic.

JohnnyBaggins says... #17

Magiccardmarket is basically the stock market page for Magic Cards in Europe. Almost all trades I've seen so far were done evaluating the cards based on the MCM-values and it's also the prime place to buy cards. alexthegreat38, when I, as a german, order something from Face to Face games (Canada) there, I end up with 3-4 Euros of shipping, which is about 4-5 dollars. So I wouldn't think that cost is too high?

March 7, 2015 11:06 a.m.

If I'm ordering several cards (which I'll probably end up doing after all of DTK is spoiled) that shouldn't be too prohibitive at all. Thank you to the Europeans on this thread who informed me of a site I didn't even realize existed!

The_Raven says... #19

CaptainWoosh, you said you bought cards from Canada. Do you know, if you have to pay import tax? I have read something about a "free trade union" or something, but can't really remember it...

March 7, 2015 11:25 a.m.

JohnnyBaggins says... #20

It depends. Sometimes it gets stuck in customs and you have to pay the fee. But usually it gets through, and all you pay is the shipping. The fee isn't really high at all and kind of depends on how much you order. If you go below 30 Euros, it's free. If it happens to get stuck in customs and you have to pay, it doesn't go much higher than five Euros.

A little help with Sarkhan Unbroken. In the +1 does the land works like a Token or you look for a land in your library?

Thanks

Goody says... #22

  1. Your question doesn't really go with the thread, but that's alright

  2. Neither. When a card "adds a mana to your mana pool", it's not talking about lands, it's talking about the mana that many cards (including lands) produce. When you tap a basic Mountain you're actually adding a mana of that land's color (red) to your mana pool - it's like basic Mountains have ": Add to your mana pool."

So that means you just have a floating mana at your disposal, and mana normally empties from your mana pool as steps and phases end (so you can only use that mana from Sarkhan Unbroken during whichever main phase you activated his ability in).

Thanks for your help.

It is worth pointing out that lands are actually colorless. They can produce colored mana, but a mountain and a plains won't help with Cliffrunner Behemoth. Took me months to learn that.
