Scavenging ooze popularity?
Economics forum

Hey (not sure if this is the right forum) but I just looked t the trade forum and it looked like everyone wanted Scavenging Ooze . I know it's a good card but why the increase in demand all of the sudden?
This is no sudden increase, Scavenging ooze is a staple in standard, modern and legacy. The demand will always be high for it.

Ooze isn't as good in Standard now as it was pre-Theros. It's actually seeing a lot less standard play.

I'm going to move this to Economics because it's about demand.
I think more people just want to pick them up to have. Scavenging Ooze hasn't gotten more popular, and it was played most heavily pre-rotation.

I find that it is heavily demanded because everyone wants to "have that money card" when it rotates out. Don't get me wrong, I got my playset because of its triumphant introduction to modern. I figured I could use a few there. But thats about it. If you have them, save them. They will either get reprinted or some dude is going to break modern with them. I smell B/G gaining more modern popularity in the coming year or so.

As far as I've heard (and keep in mind that I don't play or actively follow Modern), Scavenging Ooze has gained popularity in Modern as a cheaper counterpart to Tarmogoyf . While Goyf is obviously the better beater, Scooze can hose Goyf's CDA and present itself as a sizable creature. Players who don't have the money to buy Goyfs can turn to Scoozes as a viable option.

Epochalyptik... I play modern frequently, so allow me to interject here. Yes, the ooze is a great cheaper alternative to Goyf, (but in all reality nothing beats Tarmogoyf) and in most cases they are used hand in hand. I have seen many B/G lists since Scavenging Ooze's inception in modern that the creature base looks literally like this:
4x Deathrite Shaman 4x Tarmogoyf 4x Dark Confidant 4x Scavenging Ooze
Then of course they run the full four Liliana of the Veil
, Thoughtseize
, Abrupt Decay
, Maelstrom Pulse
and so on. Its actually kind of annoying when this happens. None of the creatures in this list can play with each other, it almost looks like some dude just had too much money to spend on magic.
In modern, the only reason to use Scavenging ooze is to pretty much have another cheap creature that can hate graveyard interactions. Many modern pilots do not target creatures with ooze, especially against storm or anything that Snapcaster Mage
is trying to target. It pretty much just keeps them in check. I honestly do not see them going up past 30 or 40 dollars anytime soon after they rotate out. Just because now you have two sets that have released it.

I'll expect ooze to be hovering around $25-$30 max. It wouldn't hit the high $40-50 as what it was previously, but I foresee heavy play still in modern/legacy post rotation.

Gnarli,
What your describing is the pretty much the core of any rock deck.
Despite the counter-productive synergy the cards themselves read, the cards work amazingly well with one another. The graveyard is fueled by the natural progression of the game and all player's succumbing to Lilly's +1 to ramp graveyard fill. Bob gives you card advantage making Lilly's +1 not hit so hard. The deck is fun as hell to play.
Here's mine.
...and have even went as far as to splash Scavenging Ooze into my Mono-Black Rock Deck.

as more of a Modern player, Scavenging Ooze is awesome at combating Tarmogoyf which can in turn be a pain in the ass to deal with

Some time before it got reprinted, Scavenging Ooze peaked at approximately $100 at one point. Be glad it's between $10-$20 right now.

It completely shuts down cards that interact with the graveyard. A couple popular cards that use the graveyard are Deathrite Shaman and Whip of Erebos . And that's just in Standard.
Plus it's a bear that buffs itself and gives you life. For G each time.
It's basically the bane of reanimator.
