Shocklands!

How does investing in shock lands seem? If they are, are there any that are going to be considerably more, or will they all hover at around the same price?

It's pretty much expected that they will all drop in price when they rotate out of Standard before rising again. The inexpensive ones, from the RTR block, may end up around $15-20 in my humble estimate. The originals even more- and I just ordered an original Ravnica Overgrown Tomb for $10. Climb to $30 please!

Invest invest invest.

They will go no lower than this. Look at the original Ravnica block shocks. Those were $30+ before RTR. These lands will hold their value well. They have no where to go but up.

cschiller Is definitely right there is no way these will go down the fact that they got reprinted in standard decimated the price and the sooner they go back to being modern only the sooner the price starts going up

They will drop a couple bucks each approaching and beyond rotation. There is no way they hold their value. Getting back up to this level about a year after rotation. Then one or two years after rotation they should be in the 15-20 range. Then a reprint will happen in m17-18. That is what I think will be the case.

Even if u don't want them for economics if u plan to play now it's probably the best time to go ahead and pick them up. Once u own shocks & fetches, u can make just about any deck u want.

At least that's what I'm doing. Trying to pick up all the shocks related to my colors right now as I already have the fetches :) Trying to pick up the older printings too. I think they'll rise more and in general they just have better artwork.

Gonna sit tight on my playset of Steam Vents and hope they go up. I bought them for $7 a pop, so even if they don't go, I'll always have them for U/R burn/combo in modern. I think the most expensive shocks will be Stomping Ground and Overgrown Tomb for their use in jund.

Will the originals always have more value than the new reprints, or will they eventually be the same price?

ChiefBell says... #11

Yes the originals should. They're just harder to find.

For the record, Watery Grave is the highest priced shockland right now. I think it might be due to the others being available in event decks and such though.

They might dip a little after rotation, that would be entirely dependent on standard only players flooding the market with them, that might also not happen. They are already out of print, so there's no more coming into the market, so expect there value to hold reasonably steady and increase over the few years to the point where you can actually sell them for a good profit.

Although personally as long as I'm interested in playing casual magic, I'll be interested in keeping hold of my shocks, they are just so damn efficient.

Shocks are fantastic cards to own and use. They're also very likely good investments too. I would thoroughly recommend buying them just so you have them to use. If they do go up then you'll have the option to sell too. Win-win.

Watery Grave is the lowest played shock in modern.
Steam Vents will prolly not even drop, foil is up over $40 and is the most played shock in modern.

Your next big shocks would be Temple Garden Overgrown Tomb for their role in pod decks

Trade I made yesterday:

Me: 3x Sphinx's Revelation , 1x Supreme Verdict , & 2x Temple of Enlightenment

Him: 4x Sacred Foundry & 3x Stomping Ground

Even after checking prices he wanted to give me more shocklands for some reason.

What on earth was that guy doing. I've somehow managed to get my hands on 2x old version of Temple Garden .

mckin - whilst certainly true, historically lands that involve blue eventually end up highest. We'll see what happens 5 years from now.

I pick up a playset of shocks every week now. Spend about $50 a week on it, which is fine.

I've got tombs, gardens, fountains, grounds, vents. I would like 2 playsets of the junk ones because I love that combination so I'd like some to keep for me.

I'm buying any and all foil shocks I can get for < $30. I already have playsets of them all so the foils are purely speculation but they seem like a lock to double/triple in the next year or so.
