Shocklands prices

I just pulled a foil Overgrown Tomb . I'm a bit unsure about what to do with it. Do I a) keep it (expect price increase over time) or b) trade it as soon as possible (expect little price change, or a decrease). Summon Epochalyptik!

I actually have a ton of shocklands but I'm most interested in what to do with my foils.

nice pull, I say keep it for one, foil shocks are awesome and I also think they will go up/hold their value a lot better

Foil shocks will always be safe - they won't depreciate in value. However, they're common enough now that you won't be taking much of a hit if you have to sell or trade them for something you really need.

Well the RTR Shocklands themselves have been on a decline with a small bump back up around Theros. They might come up a little bit more as we move into the Modern season where they are staples and we get further from when the bulk of RTR was opened, but they are going to drop even more once we get closer to rotation, though eventually rebounding as a long-long-term hold.

Foil does afford a little more stability however as there is generally more lasting demand in relation to the supply. I would expect it to slowly rise in value, dipping around rotation. Hold it if you can afford to.

I think I'll get rid of standard shocks ASAP and keep hold of my foils for a while. I try and trade my high value standard cards for high value modern / legacy cards etc.

I'd say that if you are planning on being able to keep it for at least a year after rotation do so, the price will rise simply because it is no longer being printed and is still a Modern staple.

A foil Overgrown Tomb is a great shockland, green and black are great colors to build upon in most formats, and as a single copy its perfect for any number of EDH decks involving those colors. I would say keep it and let it's inherent value be your prize, owning a foil shockland to run in EDH, sounds pretty good to me.

And like most of the responses encouraging you to hold it for increased value down the road, I agree.

Eventually they'll rebound to a price similar although not quite as high as the original shocklands.

Personally, I'd trade it for 3 none-foil overgrown tombs. People will really do that, and then you get 3 to play with, and getting 4 of every shock land right now while theyre cheap is a very good idea if you plan to ever play modern at all.

I don't play standard (EDH mainly) so I offload my normal shocks as soon as I get them. I only keep certain cards for investment purposes.

  • The normal shocks are barely expensive so they don't bother me that much.
