Should I Purchase Khans Sealed Product?

tl;dr: Should I invest in a box/fat pack/some form of sealed Khans product?

I'm about to have an extremely busy few weeks, with midterms for all of my classes occurring once every other day (exam day, day off, exam day, etc.). I want to look forward to something once these are over, and was thinking of finally getting some Khans sealed product. I know this isn't the best investment, but opening the packs is a big part of the enjoyment for me. Should I just spent the $30 or so to crack a fatpack, or try my luck with a box? Or, not bother and wait for the prerelease of Fate Reforged and try to take advantage of hyped prices? I'd likely sell anything $10+ to offset the cost. In general, is the value of the set enough to warrant me to buy in?

I know there isn't a clear cut answer, I'm just looking for opinions.

Well I personally love opening sealed products so I think it'd be a nice way to unwind

Yes, the answer is yes. First you have fetch lands. I just bought some packs from Walmart and got 2 Polluted Delta . Currently $25. There is also Dariusn and Sorin to look for.

Personally I like Khans so I picked up a box. It's not a super competitive block (so far) but damn is it ever fun just for Kitchen Table matches and what not, great flavor and some solid cards in the set (Obviously)

Not to mention Fetchlands are a big bonus in terms of monetary value, My first box I pulled 4 fetches, a foil Ashcloud Phoenix and the new Sorin, Solemn Visitor . That was worth the price of the box right there in terms of value.

JakeHarlow says... #6

That's true. However, the vast majority of rares in the set are bulk, low-value cards. Fetches will be a big deal, and there are a few really valuable rares. Nothing too crazy though. Still opening a box is fun. I was sad when I opened mine since I got only one fetch, but oh well.

@JakeHarlow that makes me sad reading that, I would be pretty cheesed about getting that box.

Don't let it discourage you though!

@Caligula: "It's not a super competitive block (so far)"

i'm not sure what you mean by this.

Khans cards have showed up in Standard, Modern and Legacy top 8's from this past weekend, not including fetchlands. it seems very competitive so far.

October 1, 2014 3:58 p.m.

Caligula says... #9

Well obviously Khans is showing up in standard.. There's only 2 sets out in the block >.>

And nothing is a staple in the set. Sans fetchlands.

Nothing so far in terms of eternal value though. You'll always see players testing out different formulas to their deck to test it out obviously, Yes there's cards that could see some big value in all formats (Goblin Rabblemaster , Despise , Murderous Cut ) but nothing is set in stone..

Hence why I said "(so far)"

October 1, 2014 4:06 p.m.

Thing is, I've never purchased my own box. I always split it with a friend or two. I'm just skeptical that will will be like our BNG box where we maybe pulled $50 in rares. Then there was the DGM box where we pulled $200.... In general, we usually pull around $100 in rares, but I I'm just afraid this will be that bad box. That's why I considered the fat pack.

Caligula says... #11

The one card that seems to be having a big splash in the standard format is Jeskai Ascendancy , There's some serious potential to break that and it's a card you can make a deck around.

ducttapedeckbox Just all on preference my man, It's the risks we take being cardboard crack addicts.

It's worth it though IMO.

Just dive in and take the risk (Unless you need the money, In which case. Priorities.)

And even if you get a sub par box, everyone is looking for Khans cards right now, It'd be easy trading to get the things you wanted or need.

Treasure Cruise will find a home in legacy decks.

Goblin Rabblemaster is m15.

Despise has been modern legal for awhile (reprint from new phyrexia). It's too situational to see serious play.

Murderous Cut has a chance.

Jeskai Ascendancy will see play in storm decks.

Temur Charm could replace Mana Leak in tarmo-twin.

There are other choices available. But I agree, in terms of what's going to see play is minimal compared to the size of the set.

It all depends on how OP feels at the end of the day. Is it worth it to open packs or save money and by the cards he wants. I also buy sealed product to support my LGS. I don't need to and sometimes I don't want to buy sealed product, but keeping my LGS open is more important to me than either of those.

October 1, 2014 4:17 p.m.

shuflw says... #14

there are going to be plenty of standard decks using Khans cards, as it is 1/5 of the standard legal card pool.

mtgtop8 doesn't have the SCG modern or legacy results up yet. check starcitygames.com.

Monastery Swiftspear and Treasure Cruise won a SCG legacy open.http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=73431

Sultai Charm and Dig Through Time were also in top 8 decks in both SCG legacy opens

Anafenza, the Foremost and Jeskai Charm were in top 8 decks for modern SCG premeir IQ's.

I'd say that's a pretty good start for the first weekend of being legal.

As gufymike said.

" in terms of what's going to see play is minimal compared to the size of the set. "

There's always cards in a new set that are made better by legacy and modern, But by all means they aren't awe inspiring cards that make you want to go out and get a playset.

They aren't even high value. Which was this forum topic is about.

Is it worthy getting a box for Monastery Swiftspear and Treasure Cruise ? Absolutely not.

And 6 cards having an impact on modern and legacy does not make the set "competitive"

It just makes decks that are already competitive that much better..

October 1, 2014 4:51 p.m.

mathimus55 says... #16

Yea, the set isn't even legal for a full week and foil Treasure Cruise 's are already $20. Thanks a lot legacy. Same for Monastery Swiftspear foils at $15. I got a box and pulled about $200 worth of cards, flipped some already for a profit even. It's a good set even w/ all the bulk stuff.

October 1, 2014 4:53 p.m.

Caligula says... #17

Not trying to hate or anything shuflw. I don't want you to get that vibe, Just trying to state a case to pick up a box of Khans.

Which I think were on the same side about, just for different reasons.

October 1, 2014 4:55 p.m.

Caligula says... #18

@mathimus55 People really like their foils.

Even the foil charms are selling for 6.00 each. Which is silly.

So naturally, Any foil that's actually usable is like 10x pricier.

October 1, 2014 4:57 p.m.

mathimus55 says... #19

Yea, I figured they would hit that price eventually, foil Delver of Secrets  Flip is there as a common too. But it took a while for delver to do that. We've had khans for less than a week. That's what blows my mind

As for money cards, my box had 5 fetches and enough to trade for 5 more, with a little left over. My friend's box had one fetch, and about 35 crap rares. You win some, you loose some with sealed product. If you just want to crack packs and sell the cards, I'd do a fat pack. If you want to play standard as well, then maybe a box is right for you, just don't spend more than $100 on it.

October 1, 2014 5:22 p.m.

notamardybum says... #21

i tend to buy fat packs over boxes because if i get terrible pulls at least i have a cool box for my cards and don't feel as bad

October 1, 2014 5:22 p.m.

Thanks everyone.

I'm leaning towards the fat pack. I do like to store cards in them (as a bonus) and it won't require me to spend an obscene amount of money. They're usually $30-35 and contain 8 packs, 40 lands, and some other stuff? My last fat pack was from Zendikar, hah. Not as cost effective as a box with respect to buying packs, but it's the only sealed product aside from individual boosters that is smaller than a box.

October 1, 2014 5:39 p.m.

That's worth purchasing*. Right...?

October 1, 2014 5:40 p.m.

Caligula says... #24

I'd say it's a safe bet for a fat pack.

Get at it!

October 1, 2014 5:43 p.m.

mathimus55 says... #25

If you're looking at it as cost per pack, box is te way to go, then just get a storage box for a buck that'll hold 4k cards or so. Then you're paying WAY less per pack. If it's 35 bucks for 8 packs in a fat pack, 100 bucks for 36 packs...it's a way better deal

October 1, 2014 5:57 p.m.

So a fatpack is actually 9 packs so it's roughly $3.33 per pack, but a box is $2.83 a pack.

But, a box is much more money than a fat pack. Do I have a good chance of making $70 of decent rares from the box and getting it for the same price as a fat pack?

October 1, 2014 6:04 p.m.

mathimus55 says... #27

I'd say you have just as good of a chance at making your money back on a box as a fat pack. More chances to hit fetches just from number of packs. Plus the buy a box foil is pretty sweet as always. I never get fat packs, it's just not as good of a deal

October 1, 2014 6:13 p.m.

bigpapa87 says... #28

Basically if you are looking for maximum value you wait a little while and pick up the singles you want.

If you are looking for something fun to do over couple days then go for some boosters

October 1, 2014 6:28 p.m.

Don't you get the buy-a-box only when you pre-order a box?

October 1, 2014 6:30 p.m.

Caligula says... #30

Yeah, It's only for pre-orders.

October 1, 2014 6:51 p.m.

mathimus55 says... #31

Nope. Just have to purchase a box at a physical store not online.

October 1, 2014 6:53 p.m.

Arvail says... #32

I got a friend who pulled 9 fetches, both walkers, and some other good stuff in a box. Geez...

October 1, 2014 7:05 p.m.

PartyGoat says... #33

Fat packs are jokes. For twice the money you get slightly more than three times the packs with a box...

October 1, 2014 7:11 p.m.

I hope I get that if I buy a box, TheDevicer.

I'll have to see what values are doing in a week or so, when I'd order the box/fat pack. I do agree that the box is much more efficient when we're talking about packs, but it requires a larger investment. I would, however, have to get one shit box to not make $50-70 back.

October 1, 2014 7:35 p.m.

Named_Tawyny says... #35

Buy a box. Especially now.

Currently, the EV of a box of Khans is somewhere in the range of about $180. Hell, I got a very mediocre set of pulls, and my rares still worked out to $150. When your EV is nearly double your cost, you buy. Doesn't matter if you like cracking packs, or you're looking for something (you can always trade later) or whatever. You get the box.

Of course, the proviso on this is that that EV won't last. Prices for the fetches, the planeswalkers, and etc will go down. So if you're buying a box to open it for Xmas, the value proposition changes.

But I just turned a fetch and a Sorin into a playset of shocks and change. Those won't drop; I'm happy.

October 1, 2014 9:22 p.m.

JakeHarlow says... #36

Thanks, Caligula. I'm going to get another box somewhere along the line, so hopefully I'll have better luck. :)

October 1, 2014 9:32 p.m.

Do you guys think there will be a big difference if I wait 2 weeks? I really don't want to order it for this weekend, got a lot of studyin' to do :(

October 1, 2014 9:34 p.m.

JakeHarlow says... #38

Don't wait if you wanna sell your rares. Everything will settle down soon. And you'll get a better overall return on the box if you have $100 to drop on it, at least at present prices. If you pull 4-5 fetches, you'll have done just fine, if you plan to sell them. Good luck!

October 1, 2014 9:56 p.m.

Reward yourself after your studies, It'll be much more satisfying, Just sayin'

Caligula has provided you with the more responsible answer. Probably go with his advice. :D

October 1, 2014 9:57 p.m.

I can't get it before my exams. Then if I do poorly on one of them, I don't have an excuse :P

October 1, 2014 11:40 p.m.

If anyone's interested, box came in today and I just finished opening it. Complete list of my KTK Box Pulls. Notables include:

Windswept Heath F
Windswept Heath
Polluted Delta
Sorin, Solemn Visitor
Siege Rhino
Butcher of the Horde F

Needless to say I'm pretty happy. Plan on holding onto the fetches till' post rotation and selling them, and offload some of the other stuff. Just in case you were curious :)
