Snapcaster's Ceiling?

I currently am one short of a playset of Snapcaster Mage, and was considering buying a fourth a bit back (you know, when he was closer to $35 or so), and then my wife had a baby and that stopped being important... Anyway, now he's sitting at $53 TCG mid and I have to wonder: is he going to keep going up, or is he at his ceiling? How much more room does he have to grow? Will I regret not picking up my fourth copy soon?

(I totally saw the title as Snapcaster's Calling)

I think if you wait till modern season is over or after mm2 comes out, he'll probably drop a bit. I'm not sure he's going any higher, but who knows. It just seems like all the good cards spike in February-May, so I'd wait.

If you need them to play, waiting 4 months for $10 isn't worth it.

Keep in mind that he only really jumped when the modern season started. He stayed that high when it was confirmed that he wasn't getting a reprint in modern masters two. I... honestly can't see snapcaster ever getting banned in modern, as he's only as good as the other cards in your deck. As such, I think he's a very safe investment. On the other hand, I think he's one of those rare eternal format staples that might actually see a reprint one day, as again, he's only as good as the other cards in your deck.

TL'DR, if you absolutely have to have your playset, I can't see this dropping past $45 in the next couple of years, unless it gets a reprint. I also can't see it rising too terribly much either. Lastly, the low new mint snapcasters are going for like $43 on tcgplayer, where as a month ago they were at 50.

I no economist, but i think they are gonna stay where they are or settle around 45.

snappy will get reprinted next year in mm16. it will probably drop to about 45-50 when mm16 is released and then rise back up again a couple months later. If you don't need him right away wait till about this time next year and u can probably save ~$15 but if you do need him don't wait for a year to save 15 bucks. but he is a safe investment regardless.

There is no absolute guarantee that Snappy will see a reprint. If he does, it depends on how large the reprint run is. As we saw with Goyf and the lot, it didn't do much to lower the prices of sought after cards. Granted, MM1 was a very limited print run, but my point stands.

Snappy sees some play in Modern, but moreso in Legacy. Given that he's played in both formats does have a variable on his price. That he's sometimes not a playset, also dictates his price. Rarity also.

Given that he will not be seeing a reprint for some time only adds to his value. Popularity of decks that include him can also add or detract from his price. Goblin Guide and Blood Moon saw massive price increases, and have maintained stable values after their spikes. If you need him, pick him up now before he goes higher.

I could see Snappy being a $70 card in the near future, if not $90 within 18 months

I'm with aeonstoremyliver on this...Snapcaster Mage is easily a $90 card. He's played in every format he's legal in, and often 3+ copies. He's good in every archetype that can play cheap spells.

Let's put something into perspective:

Snapcaster Chart

(from MtG Top 8)

In other words, Snapcaster Mage sees more play than his 2-drop cousins in multiple formats. Part of this is due to the price of cards (especially Tarmogoyf's $200 price tag), but mostly Snapcaster Mage is just that good. He's Regrowth on a 2/1 body. With flash. And he's blue.

Even with a reprint, he's still a $70 card. Everyone and their mum wants a playset. I'd say get them now while they're still somewhat affordable.

@APPLE01DOJ: Hahaha right? I traded a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx on prerelease night for two Snapcaster Mages.

I am so happy I got a foil when I did. Fretting over a sixty dollar trade seems silly now. I'm glad I have all the printings I need of him for my commander decks. But all that aside, I fear that old snappy could become a new Dark Confidant. I'd prefer him to be available for more casual players to get, but I guess that's how the cookie crumbles.
